RE: barrier cream

Hiya CR

Just thinking out loud here and I'm not sure if it will work or not, maybe some of the skin specialists here could clarify.but I am wondering if Vaseline/Petroleum jelly would work. I mean it acts as a barrier against wetness on a baby's bottom right?

Not sure if it would work against a full submersion into a swimming pool and your gonna have to spend some time applying it all over before hand.

Baby oil....would that work?

RE: barrier cream

Hi Crystal Rose,

I don't know much about eczema, I'm afraid but my friend has a baby with it and uses acqueous cream (very cheap in chemists). I use this on my own children and myself for bouts of dry skin and as a general body moisturiser etc. Only thing is that it takes ages to rub in. Thinking about what Angel said, maybe oil might work since it doesn't mix with water, though you might leave a film of oil behind you as you swim down the pool!! Also the chlorine in pools can be strong and very drying to the skin which will aggravate your eczema. Maybe your chemist will find something suitable for you.

Hope your back and eczema improve soon.

Love & blessings,

Rachel

RE: barrier cream

hi crystal_rose,

as i was reading your post, a thought popped into my read re protective swimwear . here is the link in regard of what i had in mind:

[link= http://www.kinetixsportsclothing.com.au/uv.htm ]www.kinetixsportsclothing.com.au/uv.htm[/link]

when i had dermatitis on my hands, i was prescribed savlon's barrier cream . whether they still make it is another matter, as this was some time ago, but it may be worth asking at the chemist if it still exists and can be bought over the counter.

warm wishes- calla lily x

RE: barrier cream

Protective swimwear was going to be my suggestion, because I can't think of a product that will be water resistant without irritating your eczema further. Don't use the petroleum jelly- that will be far too irritating on your sensitive skin. Maybe something gentler but with a similar consistancy like... Aquaphor. I don't know howlong this will be water resistant, so you will have to just keep re applying it.

RE: barrier cream

Diprobase cream is termed a moisturiser, in that it prevents moisture escaping from the skin by effectively forming a barrier, so it MIGHT perhaps be suitable for you by working in reverse, as it were. It's available over the counter, so a pharmacist may be able to advise you further.

You can read about it here:

and also do a search on that site for 'barrier cream', which will link you to some others.
