Dear Friends,
We hear a lot about 'junk food' and how it is perceived as making people ill, and the rise in cases of childhood asthma. Since the UK is suppoosed to have the highest number of asthma cases, could this be linked to the ever-increasing number of medicines and vaccines that parents are encouraged to pump into their children? Would catching the natural diseases (i.e. measles, mumps, German measles, chicken pox) be better for childrens' immune systems? My son (25 years old) never had a single injection, but caught all of the above diseases in childhood. He is as strong as an ox and has hardly had a day of illness.
What would others say?
Love, Patsy.

RE: Vaccinations
Hi songstress
I feel the increse in asthma and allergies is due to peoples obsession with clean, and all the labour saving devices that make cleanliness eaiser than in days gone by.
For example hot running water, and anti bacterial soap were not avalible when my nan was a kid, she has just been for a chest x ray and the doc said "how old were you when you had TB?", she replied "well I do remember being really poorly for a couple of weeks when I was seven"
Its so easy now to jump in the shower, put on the washing machine or get out the hoover out that we do it, and our kids dont get exposed to dust and germs like they used to, all except my kids that is, as I am not the worlds best housekeeper!, but they are healthy, and happy!
Take care
RE: Vaccinations
i have been thinking this for ages. i hate housework and get no real joy from it, like some people do, so i dont do it unless i can help it. my kids rarely get colds, usually have 100% attendance at school and are generally and always have been healthy.
friends we know that disinfect everything and have spotless houses, have poorly kids with asthma and allergies.
my mother says *you'll eat a peck of dirt before you die* and i do believe she's right!
RE: Vaccinations
Hi Rosie
My sentiments exactally! I to know women who have lovely spotlessly clean houses, and their kids are always coming down with something or other, and when they ask why dont my kids get it I just say its because I am a muckey cowbag!
Take care
RE: Vaccinations
Oh great some other scruff bags to hang out with:D:D:D:D:D
I dont believe in all this antibacterial stuff either. Nor do I believe in vaccinations. Im 28 and I have never had a vaccination except a tetanus when I was bullied into it when I was 13 after being bitten by a dog. I had mumps, measles, and chicken pox (twice!!!) when I was a kid. I never had rubella though but I recently had a blood test to check for immunity and it appears Im immune to it anyway.......so glad i decided on not having that injection. I believe being around animals when you are a child helps too. Ive been surrounded by animals all my life, never had allergies or asthma. Im with you all on the being too clean thing, its not healthy:D:D
tidy-ish and clean is ok, spotless and sterile is ridiculous.

RE: Vaccinations
Dear Songstress,
There is something that is still unknown for some reason to British medical system. I am a friend of a lady whos kid was astmatic. She knows all about asthma and she has finally cured her son of asthma. She can truely qualify as asthma specialist as she knows so much about it...
There are different types of asthma. I am not talking about genetical cases. But a lot of cases of asthma are due to incorrect care for children. I have seen so many times that in a very cold weather kids are dressed in very bad cloathes. It hurts me to see it. Little babies with no hats or coats, little girls wearing socks and summer dresses, boys wearing their school uniforms and nothing else, while their parents are dressed in coats. As a result kids do get colds and bronchitis. I saw a littl baby caughing it's head off in a shopping centre. This baby shouldn've been outside, but in bed, well cared for and warm. So why are we surpirsed that Britain is a leader in children's asthma?
Repetative bronchial infection often leads to asthma....I think social services should send some kind of leaflets to everybody "how to dress your kids..."

RE: Vaccinations
I think it is eay to glory in the good old days when there were no vaccinations, cleaning products etc and decide that everyone was better off.
I think we cannot forget that these so called harmless diseases and a lack of hygiene also caused a great deal of suffering, death and kept the poverty trap going for so many.
I think that illness, allergyand a lack of well being is people is more complex, in some ways we seem to have in the west swapped a set of problems for new ones, i don't think we have ever had a perfect ststem and we don't now.
years ago people suffered from the effects of poor diet, filth, lack of hygiene and disease and a lack of health care. now we have so many wonderful solutions to those problems but suffer due to pollution, still a poor diet very often and over kill on cleaning products.
Families have all over the world ttaekn pride and effort into keeping their living area clean and tidy, this is for their well being, people cleaned up but didn't use the amount of chemicals we have now.
i wonder if we haven't gone OTT, also it concerns me that people confuse cleanliness with a certain smell etc, so they spray all sorts but are possibly less clean than before?
TB was for many a terrible disease, i have seen a man die of it and it was terrible so if we can save people from that suffering i am certain it will be a good thing. Also my Dad had it and survived but part of his lung is very scared and not good.
Maybe one of our troubles these days is that we take these vaccinations and medicines for granted and forget that we still have to be responsible for our own health.
RE: Vaccinations
I agree! my eldest is partially vaxed (before I knew better) and my youngest unvaxed completely. There's no way i'd let them have any now. My youngest has a brilliant immune system. He gets a 24 hour high fever and then no illness follows. He fights off whatever it was and it doesn't get him! He has had chicken pox and mumps and was fine. Mumps was just hamster face for a week. Other than that you'd not have known he was ill. Childhood disease imo is practise for the immune system. Could be why it has been shown that those who had measles when young are less likely to have cancer. I'm not too clean either. rubbish at housework so it's just as well! i am just making sure I do all i can to keep them healthy, breastfeed and good food! They'll do just fine!
