Hola,

I usually suffer from muscle stiffness (shoulder & neck pain) due to stress, as well as painful PMS & cramps. I've always treated both problems with tiger balm (the red type) with great results. Problem is the strong smell. And it leaves yellow stains on clothes & sheets that won't go away. Recently I've been told by a friend that arnica cream is a better remedy (plus it doesn't leave stains).

Does anybody here use either remedies to treat muscle stiffness and if so which one would you recommend and why?

thanx 🙂

Arnica is typically used for bruising rather than muscle aches/pains, and in it's homeopathic form is used for the treatment of shock.

Not sure it'll do much for muscle ache, though you could give it a go. Usually it's the things like tiger balm/deep heat etc. that muscle ache needs as it's the warmth generated by it that helps the muscles. Unfortunately, that warmth is a result of the ingredients that have that strong smell.

Hi Ana

I'd look at taking a magnesium supplement. Magnesium is needed by the muscles to help them relax and is often helpful for PMS cramps. My husband takes 'Liver Salts' - basically fizzy magnesium sulphate daily and is a very fit and physically active pensioner - doing more than many half his age - and rarely suffers from muscle problems now.

Hi, main uses of arnica are for bruising, aches and pains following over-exertion (even mentally over-doing it, so it may fit your stress symptoms), injury, shock (physical or emotinal), jet lag (a form of over doing it, I guess)......but don't see how it really fits in with PMS symptoms unless you feel really bruised and 'bashed about' at that time. Maybe you could try the arnica cream and if it doesn't help it all, address the remaining symptoms with something else....Hom

You could always try the white Tiger balm, which doesn't stain like the red. Still smelly though!

I've never used arnica, but Tiger Balm works well for me with muscle stiffness (shoulder & neck pain).

Also, I believe they have opposite actions: Tiger Balm increases blood flow while arnica decreases it. 😉

My acupuncturist used Tiger balm on me for the first time last week for my sciatic nerve- WOW !! I immediately went to the Asian health food store and bought it. I have been miserable with sciatica for LONG time. I use the red because of it's strength while the white variety is not as strong. She says it has anti inflammatory properties-I am completely amazed!! I have been virtually pain free for five days due to the acupuncture and the Tiger balm. An Asian doctor once said that they were trained in western medicine, but preferred to use what had worked for 3,000 years-I wholeheartedly agree!!

Arnica v tiger balm

Hello Ana, Arnica is best for bruising, injuries, shock. For stiffness Rhus tox is much more effective, however, if it is caused by stress, I would recommend that you see a homeopath who will take a full case and prescribe to encompass the menstrual cramps as well, so you no longer need to use anything for stiffness or for the cramps, as the homeopathy will help with both. EFT is also good to help you deal with stress. Best wishes, Grace

Well according to me the use and power of Tiger Balm in fighting pain is far more when compared with arnica.
