Hi
I recently tried and failed to give up sugar! I dont have loads only have honey in teas...just chocolate a few squares a day...I have found it the hardest to give up after giving up wheat and dairy...
Just wanted some advice is a small amount of sugar ok or is it best to completely cut it out of your diet?
Kind Regards
Anna
Anna,
Do you eat fruit? Because that has sugar in it OK the chemical composition is different (more complex) than refined sugar but sugar still the same.
Do you dislike yourself that much you want to deny yourself small pleasures? 😉
We are told to cut cholesterol out of our diets but in fact the body needs a level of cholesterol to function properly.
I think moderation is the key word here.

I see nothing in white*willow's post to suggest she doesn't like herself.
I DO agree with the last line in your post though! 😉

I dont know how to do a tongue in cheek smilie so had to take a chance it would be interpreted the right way...
Is tongue in cheek the same thing as putting words in someone else's mouth? 😉 And what would be the right way of interpretation here?
On sugar, here's a website with a lot of information:
though it seems to me that in this instance it might be more a case of 'a little of what you fancy does you good'. 🙂
I'd certainly rather eat (or drink) sugar than the alternative - aspartame.

I do not know but I am happy to sit at the feet of a master and learn (bows and thinks I am not worthy) 😉
Hi White Willow,
Thankfully I can't stand the stuff!
I was going to suggest EFT for cravings/addictions, or to look at chromium defiency, although it doesn't sound like your sugar consumption is excessive. But what a fab site Holistic!!! 🙂 This is SO useful for people. Yes, anything is preferable to aspartame!
Candlelight:)
Hi all
Thanks so much Holistic that is a fab site and I do have sugar 'issues'!! I managed to get rid of the actual addiction to it a few weeks ago Im taking these amazing deeper acting flower remedies and one of the unexpected things to go was the need to eat one of those large bars of dark chocolate every night I guess I was doing it for a quick happy fix but the flower remedies have helped me to feel genuinely happy...I guess I am ok eating a small amount though....or might try swopping it for dried fruit...
I think I may get one of the books on that site looked really interesting...
Thanks
Love

I'm so glad you found the site useful, white*willow ... and Candlelight too ... but you know, I nearly didn't post the link because, having revisited the site, I saw it had had a revamp since I first discovered it some years ago. The very last thing I wanted to do, in view of the sidebar and other headings there, was imply that you had any kind of addiction, since there was nothing about that in your opening post.
:hidesbehindsofa:
I'm now pleased to know you've had success with flower remedies. 🙂
A few years ago and short term only, for a different kind of medical condition, I had to give up sugar for a while, as well as dairy, wheat and yeast. Brown rice and broccoli got very boring, I can tell you! A very few sultanas or raisens were allowed. Anyway, that was when I discovered the Radiant Recovery site. I preferred this approach to drugs from the doctor, and it was successful.
I also bought a book, Cooking Without by Barbara Cousins, which was recommended by the nutritionist I consulted, and invaluable. This has initial chapters covering a variety of medical conditions AND foodstuffs, followed by recipes, some of which I still follow. It can be found on Amazon UK, and there are now sequels, [and some other authors with whom I'm not familiar] on this search link:
If it subsequently inactivates itself, as they sometimes do, go to and put 'Cooking Without' into a search on the Books section.

Hi Holistic
No offense taken at all its a great site thank you:)
Are you back to a 'normal' diet now then? Its tough sometimes having to give up all these things! We have stopped eating potatoes on the advice of someone on HP cos of my daughters excema so now its no dairy, wheat, potatoes or tomatoes!!:o Phew!
Will look up those books
Many thanks
Anna
It is hard to give up. I'm a sugar-holic. It's easier to cut down slowly eg put one teaspoon of sugar in your tea instead of two. Then when you get used to it, put half. Instead of a giant Mars Bar, have a normal size one, then cut down to a fun size (and just one, not 5 😀 ).

Normal diet? Oh yes, the one mentioned earlier was some years ago, and quite short term. At least, my diet is normal for me, inasmuch as I need to eat little and often because of low blood sugar, and with quite a high proportion of protein. A quick hit with a choccy bar, as suggested by Darren, is effective in the short term but ultimately counterproductive and doesn't keep my energy levels up.
I try to buy mainly organic, natural food ... from the health store, local farm shops, and supermarkets who increasingly label their stuff 'free from artificial colours, preservatives' etc. And I always read the small print on the labels to ensure no nasty sweeteners or E numbers either. Not fanatical, and often quite frugal, but something of a 'foodie' with a regrettable penchant for the exotic and frequently expensive! 😉 🙂

Buddhist nutrition specialists say sugar is definitely not good
for the body, a chemical reason, it forms a complex
compound with calcium to wash it away from teeth.
The body however needs short-chain sugars, the same people
say hidden hypoglycaemia is the most widespread disease
and main source of depression, they recommend natural sources like grape, melons, carrot.
Onion has almost as much sugar as melons.
For wheat - I think it's very wrong desision
Hi,
Without simple sugars you would not survive, as the simplest form of sugar (glucose) is used in every cell of the body to produce energy to keep you alive, this is called respiration.
However, we do not need to take in or eat these simple sugars to get the required amount. The digestive system includes a complex system of enzymes which break down starchy food, like bread, pasta, rice and potatoes, into these glucose molecules, ready for our cells to use. Even if we cut out all simple sugars and complex carbohydrates, we would still take in enough food types to break down into glucose. Also the other dreaded nutrient, fat, can also be converted into sugars as they all have side chains of glycerol, this is the idea that underpins the atkins diet.
Please don't try this though, as the body can then start to convert proteins into sugar which can put you into a state called ketosis, which is dangerous for the body. As you all have said, a balanced diet and moderation is the way to go.
Just thought I would add my bit, as a science teacher!!;)

Yes it is best to completely cut it out of your diet but you can take most
of things in you diet like sugar free sodas, milk is ok in moderation, chicken is good breads and pastas break down and make blood sugars rise
it's not that you cannot ever have a sugar soda or cookies or cakes, moderation is the key.
Our body can not survive without sugar, you can give up the white stuff but only if you compensate by eating fruits, vegetables and honey with relatively high sugar content, otherwise your body will feel very weak.
I must admit I'm really bad. I have sweetex in my tea. I used to have sugar but then went onto sweetex because of the calorie thing. I have tried to cut it out but I just can't I tried for two weeks without anything in my tea and I hated every cup. I couldn't wait to go back. I still don't know whats worse sugar or saccharin??
