Some helpful tips on getting the very best from your fruit and
veg
****************************************************************

Hi I get my monthly health info and thought I would share this:

Are you eating your five portions of fruit and veg a day?
Five-a-day keeps the doctor away, so says the Government. To help
you get the most from your fruit and veg, here are a few useful
tips.

* When buying Golden Delicious Apples. Choose the ones with more
brown spots. The more spots, the more flavour.

* To tell if a Cox’s apple is ready to eat. Shake it. If the
pips rattle, then you’ve got a perfect apple.

* What to look for when choosing lemons or oranges. Always go
for fruit that feels way too heavy for its size.

*For storing lemons a long time. If you’ve got a whole load of
lemons but won’t use them until much later than when you bought
them, store them in a bowl covered with cold water.

*Don’t always buy with your eyes. The more crinkly the skin is
on a honeydew melon, the more honey-sweet it will be inside. It’s
the same with red peppers.

* Check the bottom of a cabbage before buying. If the bottom of
a cabbage is too white, don’t buy it. It’s a sign that the leaves
and root have been trimmed off.

* Always buy broccoli with tight heads. If the heads are tight
and really firmly packed together, they won’t drop off when you
cook them. Also, when cooking your broccoli cut the thick stems
off and throw them into your boiling water several minutes before
the heads, which take hardly any time to cook.

* To stop bananas going black when peeled. If you are making a
fruit salad and using bananas, cover the unpeeled fruit with very
cold water and leave for a good 10 to 15 minutes before peeling.
No more ugly black bananas to ruin the look of your salad!

* To make your lettuce last longer. Just cut out the core and
sprinkle sugar into the cavity. It’ll stay fresher and crisper
much longer.

* Tear your lettuce don’t cut it. When you’re making your salad,
never cut the lettuce. Otherwise the leaves will turn brown.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the tips, especially for bananas. I like blackened bananas personally, but they can ruin the appearance of a fruit salad.

Do you have any more food tips?

Love, Patsy.
