My mother used to say: sleep before 12 (am!) counts double. Is there any truth in this?

I have heard that an hour before 11 is worth 2 hours after... im sure there is lots of research with the benefits...

early to bed and early to rise (makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise)

We have circadian rhythms that are controlled by daylight - so being awake at midnight (which by definition will be dark - is not natural.

Tell that to my son ......
However, I can understand that at night it is nice and quiet for work, if that's what you want. But only because the rest of us are wisely asleep!

As to the article about light: no trouble there - I do like it dark when I'm going to sleep. For my afternoon nap I always put something over my eyes.

I always think it is a sensible use of space, the one getting up early and the other staying up late. Gives you some nice time to yourself.

So have we, for longer even. And we're both very early, my husband getting up around 4 most days, and me only an hour later ...... which is maybe why I insist on having breakfast and lunch undisturbed, on my own!

Hi Anne,
Early to sleep and early to rise, make us healthy and wise! Have proper sleep of 7/8 hours daily and have nutritive meal plan for a healthy and active life. Having proper sleep helps in dealing with stress, anger and improve our mental ability.

It was the strawberries that did for me last week, until I found that I should eat them only after lunch and not too many! 🙁

As far as I'm concerned I'm a night owl and if left to my own devices, I stay up all night and sleep during the day! If I'm diurnal, it is only due to the necessities of adaptation to social life (because society is organized in such a way that most of what we have to do has to be done during the day).

I heard decades ago that it has to do with the time of our birth: this is the time of day (or night in this case) when we are the widest awake. I was born at half past midnight, maybe this explains my being nocturnal?

It's generally better for the body to be awake when the sun is up and sleep when it's down. So i would listen to your mom 🙂

Unfortunatelly i don't seem to be able to fall asleep before 3 am 🙁 that really messes my life up.

I’m always up early, but I regularly have trouble falling asleep (eaten too much, more often than not!!). What usually helps though not always, is some walnuts or banana when I’m in bed. After about twenty minutes I do start to feel sleepy.

Or could your problem be to do with lack of melatonin? Melatonin makes you sleep, and is produced by your pineal gland, normally only when you are in darkness. Using mobiles, computers and television before going to bed shuts down melatonin production, because they give off a particular blue-ish light. Personally I have started wearing so-called blue-blocker glasses, wraparounds for when I use those things in the evening.

I hope this helps a bit!
