Any comments would be greatly appreciated here, I have (apparently) got a problem called Lichen Planus in the mouth, the pain and soreness is constant, sometimes bearable others just the opposite, I can hardly sleep and after nearly a year it just seems to be getting worse, given a specific steroid to rinse mouth (waste of time) as are pain killers. Last time I saw consultant he suggested an anti-depressant...arrrrgggghhhh
Lichen planus is very painful - you have my sympathies.Anti- depressants are used as analgesics . Amitriptyline was one of the the first anti-depressants and now almost its only use is for neuropathic pain.
But constant pain is very depressing and I can understand the logic of the suggestion. When we are depressed or tired pain seems much worse because we are much ore sensitive to it.
Analgesics are only one way to stop pain impulses being transmitted to the receptors in the brain that actually register the pain. There are many complementary therapies that can help including hypnotherapy.

Thanks for reply Tashanie and for the link Daz
I have looked at many links but everyone seems to be tearing their hair out as there is really nothing to help. Don't know what to do about the anti-depressants - if anyone knows me on here I am usually way against such things. Also I have looked up the side effects and they look really enjoyable to say the least, plus I have glaucoma so that is a possible risk factor to take into account.
Oh buggar take me to a high cliff 😮 😮 😮
From personal experience, I would definitely take the advice of taking an anti-depressant, and also hypnosis to help deal with the pain - find a Traditional Chinese Medicine therapist/doctor, and talk to them - acupuncture may help with pain too. Get your GP to prescribe an anaesthetic mouthwash. Have you tried an oral corticosteroid for a couple of weeks?
So in 3 or 6 months times (if) the Lichen Planus is still present does one continue the anti depressants ?
When will it ever end . Two people I know of late has been under anti depressants and wish that they had not started them .
Coming off them is likened to withdrawal symptoms that brought about a kind of depression for them, something similar to what brought them to take them in the first place .
If it was me I would place all my efforts into fixing the problem .
Some relate and treat the Lichen Planus as they would candida .
I would even entertain using kefer as a mouth wash, eliminate sugars and starch carbs etc etc .. Purify the blood etc, etc ..
In for a penny in for a pound, I would go full hog on this .. show no mercy 😀

Oh dear Jeanie!
Give varun Mudra a try. these mudras are little gems of self healing.
Tips of Pinky and thumb touch and sit in this for a total of 45 minutes a day while watching telly etc. could take breaks in between.
Kali Mir 6x seems like suitable remedy for what you describe.
If these blighters are white then include nat Mur 12x as well along side Kali mur.
Take heart Jeanie hope it gets sorted quick

Firstly thank you all for your comments, my son works in mental health and he feels strongly as you do Daz to avoid taking anti-depressants. Jabba I was given a mouthwash in the form of little pink tablets, can't remember the name now, maybe I should pursue them longer than I did.
jnani, I was totally lost with your varun Mudra/Pinky and thumb until I realised it was the hand positions! Thanks I will try and also the Kali Mir.

Little pink tablets were possibly prednisolone or betamethasone soluble tablets . I would guess the directions were to dissolve them in water and use the solution as a mouthwash. The amount of steroid you would absorb from this if you spit it out after using would be minimal and a mouthwash is the logical way to try and deal with a problem in the mouth and it is very low risk in terms of any side effects.. I think they would be worth a try. After all whats the worst that can happen? It won't work and you will be no worse off than you are now. You might find it actually helps.
HI they are betamethasone soluble tablets, taken them for nearly 4 months now, waste of time.

I thought from your comments you hadn't used them. 4 months is a reasonable trial. My only query would be how long you swilled the solution round your mouth. It does need to be more than just a quick swill . It needs to be 10 to 15 seconds . But if you have been doing that and got no benefit then I wouldn't argue with your assessment of them.
Hi Sally, no as mentioned in my initial post I had been taking these to no avail. However, I am wondering as you say that I have possibly not been rinsing long enough. I aim to get another prescription and be more vigilant with timing. Having said that, I was going to try those jnani mentioned...

Do you think it best if I try those first? As obviously mixing them won't show which (if any) may be doing any good. I can't understand why I am getting such a variation in the discomfort, frequently feels as though I have deep open wounds in the gums with intense soreness, along with pain throughout my teeth, cheek bones and jaw line.

Does it matter what helps if you get some improvement? I know conventional wisdom says you shouldn't mix homeopathy with normal medication. (I have studied homeopathy) I certainly wouldn't take any homeopathic pills within 2 hours of using the mouthwash but I can see no reason why you cannot try both. Good luck whatever you try to do
Having had experience of this dreadful condition, but at the 'other end', I would throw everything at it!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely think that hypnosis for pain control was the main help.
Methods and technologies of dealing with and overcoming the pain could stem from hypnotherapy. It may take a long time, but any slight relief I'm sure would be very welcome for you.
Perhaps the mouthwash you have been prescribed is only making matters worse or irritating the condition. Have you taken note of how the condition feels an hour after using the solution? These pharmaceutical marketing materials always encourage you to make clear note of when a remedy is not performing as such.
With your next prescription, make clear note of what effect and sensations the steroid is creating. Make a decision and request a new solution if needs be. Best of luck. How long have you had this condition for?
