Ice could harm your health

You've probably heard already about why you shouldn't eat peanuts from bowls in pubs and bars, due to the bacteria lurking in these bowls from the many unwashed hands, but this latest really surprises me.

Recently I read that during a study, bacteria were found on ice cubes served in many bars and restaurants in London. If you don't live in London, then I'm sure this warning is just as timely for you as well.

Samples were taken from 407 premises, and a total of 44% of ice cube samples were found to contain coliform bacteria, 5% E.coli and 10% enterococci - all of which can cause sickness and diarrhoea.

Advice would be to steer clear from ice cubes, and even if you're making them at home only use bottled or filtered water, just to be on the safe side.

Was sent this recently and thought it may be of interest

RE: Ice could harm your health

Thanks for this Sue.
I never have ice in my drinks anyway, I used to live in a pub and know that they are putting less drink in your glass to earn more money out of you!
Now I know a good reason not to have it! Yuk.

You are quite right Sue. It is also the case that still bottled water has harmful bugs in it that are not present in fizzy including e-coli etc. I also avoid pub ice cubes....the ritual of ice and lemon in everything? As Netty says ice is much cheaper that the drink it is displacing! Neat [sm=jump1.gif] is best I say!

Iced drinks aren't good for stomach anyhow - they kick off acid production, when there may be no solids to digest. [:@]

RE: Bacteria - we need exposure to these to stimulate the immune system & keep it on it's toes. Otherwise it reitres or gets bored & starts to get up to mischief! [:o]

Suggest checking out the Hygiene Hypothesis. 😉
