Hi Lookbeyond,

I haven't seen anything regarding weight loss but strangely enough I have been chatting about grape seed extract today for differnt reasons.

Healthy eating and exercise is always my best advice.

Best wishes.

I read a book in the 70s by a man who claimed to have dissolved his kidney stones by following a grape-only diet - (our local library in those days had some amazing books!), It seemed genuine enough, but his regime was extreme and was carried out for a specific reason; I suppose grape juice as part of a diet plan wouldn't be harmful, but not if it's the only thing - that sounds too much like the "cabbage diet".

I'll do my best Finalshine :o!

First of all Stephen Barrett is also known as QuackWatch - he is singularly opposed to any complementary medicine that is not double-blinded placebo controlled tested so is unlikely to give a very balanced view, also see <a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="here">here, and <a class="go2wpf-bbcode" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="here">here.

In his article on The Grape Cure he covers a considerable history of the 'cure'. But owing to his bias it is hardly likely to be balanced. There are some aspects that point out dubious claims made a century ago - but remember this was still a time that people were being locked up as mad for suffering from , a deficiency of vitamin B3, from which many died. Biochemistry has come a very long way in the last 100 years and the understanding of how body cells function on a molecular level has changed our understanding of so much.

Looking at the Grape Cure, it seems to be a detox method - well used by naturopathic practitioners using fruit as a basis. Detoxing is beneficial for many, helping to rid the body of accumulated toxins - both metabolic or environmental. In the last 100 years some 50,000 new chemicals have been discovered and many have entered the food chain, are inhaled or absorbed through our skin. The liver has to deal with them and may struggle to do so, hence a period of detoxing can be helpful. Many detox methods are fruit based.

For weight-loss this method will probably work, as it is calorie-restricted. It will also have the benefits of detox in the short term. But to have long-lasting benefits it will have to be followed up with a good wholefood diet like the diets to retrain the body's tastes and balance of the right nutrients. I would also add that it would be best for the grapes used in the Grape Cure system to be chemical-free - and this might be a challenge ;).

The grape cure is effective in the treatment of obesity. It cleanses the body by flushing out toxic waste. Vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, weakness and an urge to rest, headaches, migraines, backache and other body pains are symptoms of the cleansing process at work. if they occur, it is important to continue the diet while simultaneously listening to the needs of your body. A headache might suggest that you drink more hot water. Backache might make you aware of the tension in your body. Massage will generally provide relief in such circumstances.
