RE: Listening to the soul ? Or the ego ?
I have been pondering the various thoughts contained in this thread and I wonder if I might introduce a hypothesis that has been forming in my head. Forgive me, then, if I think out loud:
It goes like this: many of us here seem to believe in the theory of 'soul contracts', in that we agree with our fellow souls, with some or all of whom we have karma to work through, that we will take birth 'with' them, either in the same family or that our paths will cross at some point. This to me makes perfect sense and in no way contradicts any of my other beliefs, which come mainly from the advaita vedanta school of thought.
Now, when Vivian says that our family are here to help us, I wonder - and I try to strip this of any form of ego or arrogance - whether it might be that we are here to help our family. You see, it seems to me that we, those of us contributing to this thread, have in our own ways and at our own times, had some kind of 'awakening' and are now striving to live our lives with conscious awareness and to learn the lessons which are put in our way. For me that means especially learning to 'detach' and to be a witness, rather than to be sucked into the soap opera drama that is going on all around me. And to be aware and open, to go with the flow in the certain knowledge that I am being taken care of.
Now, here is my question. Is it not feasible that, on a soul level, before taking birth this time around, Ruminumi and her sister (who in previous lives may or may not have been family members, may have been 'enemies', may have harmed or been harmed by one another) have agreed to a contract whereby Ru, for example, has said that she will stay in her sister's presence for as long as her soul can stand it in order to a) help her sister's development and b) aid her own progress along the path by allowing herself to be tested by her sister's negative energy? If that were the case, I envisage that Ruminumi might well have said 'Thus far I will go and no further. I will not allow you to damage my evolution. I reserve the right to withdraw from the relationship before it harms me irrevocably. If I do so, it will be with no rancour towards you but in order for me to marshall the forces at my disposal to make myself stronger and to allow you the time to work on yourself, if that should be your destiny, or not.'
I am going to read this back now to see if it makes sense, because I feel I am just rambling on. this is of course pure conjecture. But maybe this is how it happens. Comments?
Blessings

PS Having read this back to myself, it really is what I wanted to say. But I hope it makes sense to you too.
RE: Listening to the soul ? Or the ego ?
Hi Sunanda,
I LOVE the way you have explained it!! And I agree with what you are saying 100%. Your words have really stuck a chord in me, and I'm going to have to go away and think about this some more!

RE: Listening to the soul ? Or the ego ?
Sunanda, although this brings up feelings of not wanting to put myself 'above ' my sister ' , I would so like your ideas to be true.
Strangely, I had been considering sending my sister some flowers, not for any attampt at reconciliation, even anonymously, just coming from a place of love that I obviously still have for her.
I imagined the flowers in detail, how they would be packaged, look, etc.
This morning, completely out of the blue I recieved an identical box of the most lovely flowers, from someone else, for a most trivial reason.!
It made me feel somehow that this was the Universe reassuring me, and saying that I am doing the right thing. Silly maybe , but it felt like one of those moments .
Thankyou so much for those thoughts Sunanda, they are very special.
With love Ru xx
RE: Listening to the soul ? Or the ego ?
Ru, you are 'above' your sister in the sense that you are higher up the mountain. But you are not trying to get ahead at her expense. You are leaning down and offering her a helping hand. She is not yet ready to grasp your hand and take advantage of your help. Perhaps that time will come, perhaps not. It actually has nothing to do with you - it is for her to make her own way on her own path.
I just loved what happened with the flowers. What do you feel? Is it appropriate to send her flowers? Can you perform this action with no thought of the fruits thereof? D'you know, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that your sister has already or is about to undergo some shift. Anything can happen and probably will, now that you have stepped back. Isn't it exciting? You are entering a whole new phase in your relationship with your sister. Change is in motion.

RE: Listening to the soul ? Or the ego ?
I agree with you 100%, Sunanda. We should never underestimate the value of everything we do. That's not ego, that's acknowledging that our actions have a greater effect or reason than we might otherwise suspect.
I was fortunate enough to deal with a karmic debt some years ago. I asked for the woman's forgiveness, which she gave freely and we parted. Now, I came to the conclusion after some further meetings that I really didn't like where she was coming from very much; nothing to do with our debt which was done and dusted... So I decided that I could live without her in my life - and did. No rancor, no dislike - just acknowledging that the work was done and we could move on.
Similarly, something nasty happened to me in which I was paying a debt toward several people. I didn't like what I'd created, but I could accept my dues and release it without anger or hate. It was a good lesson.
As you said, change is in motion... If Ru can go with the flow, who knows what good things may come her way? 🙂
