Hi everyone!
I'm new to this site today, so I hope I'm on the right page..please bear with me! I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid last April, but my doc guesses that I've been underactive thyroid for several years..I think thats prob right re my symptoms.
Anyway I really just wondered if any other 'hypo's' out their have the same prob as me? I have put on 3 stone over the last 7 years, previously I could lose the weight with sensible dieting but I'm just getting bigger and bigger! I thought that when I started taking thyroxin my weight would fall off...but no such luck!!! (the weight gain has slowed down a bit though)
OK ...so my Q is: has anyone found a diet that works-while on thyroxin ?!
Even you you hav'nt its nice to be here!
Thanks
Kathy h
Thyroid - Fire in endocrinal system.
Losing Fire due to underactivity means Yin energies growing,
first is Dampness - gaining weight in general.
Everything is logical.
Acupuncture schemes:
Dampness ---> heat ---> dampness down, wind up.
Or:
Heat ---> cold ---> D down, W up
If interested, I can mark the points on your finger joints
to colour them by a felt-tip pen, may already help.

What? Can you explain this more fully?
i have a slice of wholegrain (i love my bread too)with a poached egg or porrage for breakfast and a glass of vegetable juice I wasn't too keen on it to start with but know how much better i'm feeling, I think if we could all go back to basic food nutrition we would all feel better ,I'm hoping to reduce my thyroxine dose within six months ,we are all different but we should never give up
Hi Katyboo, just wondering how you are getting on??
I have hope .... someone on another forum has lost over 8 stones since April '08 and this is down to being fully medicated on levothyroxine and having T3 added.
The interesting thing is though is that she has not need to reduce her dose since losing all of this weight. Therefore the theory that we need more meds the bigger we are goes out of the window!
I am so miserable with this weight gain, I dread the summer, especially as we will probably get one this year!
The worst summer time probably falls into second half of July
and August (+September)?
What? Can you explain this more fully?
To explain fully, one will have pleasure of about 500 pages
to post.
First is targeting the thyroid via endocrynal system,
second - via general body energy mapping.
alks 123,While I acknowledge that you are very knowledgible in the field of chineese medicine, for those who are not and who have no clue what you are talking about, could you put it in simple terms and we could all benefit.THANKS.:)
You target thyroid by a sequence of points regarding to it's own
energy, then you balance the energies inside, to see the symptoms as excess and lack of certain energies.
There's a lot behind this schemes (theory of Triorigin, 6 energies
and 8 "essntials", space + time energies, nails Neitro-system), but the practical use is very simple.
Dear Carboots,
Be careful of skipping meals or going on to any length of fasting periods..as this only makes your metaboolic rate more sluggish ..yet make your cravings crazy..so much so when you permit your self to eat..you are likley to pick on high caloric and snacky food ..and even binge on it..
Which causes you to gain even more weight than you started with!!
Many can relate to this simple weight fluctuation phenomenon..
The trick is to expend your excess stored weight /fat tissue through an activity that you love..(not necc gym) by fully engaging in it and enjoying it on a consistantly regular basis..this would look like 2-3 times per week typically.
Thyroid is a very senstive hormone..and the slightest of changes to your metabolism can make you losse or gain weight very easily..much to many people despaire!!
Rememeber..with our on going ageing..what used to work will also have less of an effect as we mature - thus taking more effort from our part to shift that weight or activate our growth hormones to do what it's suppose to do in favour of our higher self-esteem.
With warm wishes to you all
Vathani
I wonder if some of you who have been taking medication are only taking T4 and not T3. Generally, the body will convert T4 to T3 but some thyroids cannot do it, so you need supplementation. You get both versions in bioidentical pig thyroid, which is what I use. I doubt many doctors in the UK know how to prescribe it. Ask your doctors to test you for Free T4 and Free T3 levels. Most only seem to do TSH and T4. The synthetic versions of both are supposed to be okay (unlike synthetic HRT).
I lost the weight by counting calories and exercising nearly everyday with walking and weights. Eating healthy foods won't work if you are eating more calories than you are burning. Before I was diagnosed, I still lost weight that way but it was slower. Thyroid meds are not a magic weight loss pill. At one point my dose was too high and I didn't magically lose weight. I just felt jittery.
I suspect many of you are perimenopausal and menopausal and the symptoms are nearly identical to low thyroid. I had to treat both conditions at once, I take bioidentical estrogen and progesterone and so far everything is fine. I still need an annual blood draw to check my doses for estrogen, progesterone and thyroid to make sure I am optimized.
Jillian Michaels, a Biggest Loser trainer, has a new book about eating foods to optimize your hormone levels. She has trained the past three winners of the US Biggest Loser, all women. It used to be thought women had a disadvantage because of hormones, but she has found the key. Mastering Your Metabolism is the title.
Having finally had my dose of thyroxine increased to 125mcg I am hoping to see some weight loss at last, after nearly 8 years of medication!
I am currently twice what I should weigh and have been following the Slimming World plan.
I find this very easy to follow as there are plenty of "unlimited" foods so I never feel hungry and by eating small, regular meals I am helping to keep my metasbolic rate up. I am also beginning to increase my activity levels.
As my friend pointed out, it has taken me 7 years to gain the weight, so it's going to take a while to lose it again!!!
I am looking into complimentary therapies too.
Sensible eating and exercise really is the only answer.
weight problems and underactive thyroid
hi
i have had a thyroid problem for 15 years, starting with hashimoto thyroid.
4 years ago after feeling slugish and many of the long list of symptoms of underactive thyroid. i did some research on the internet into t3 and t4 and found some people claimed that taking t3 and t4 separately made them feel more alert. i went to my gp with the info and asked to try this treatment. she admitted she didn't know much about it and referred me to a consultant at the hospital, he said there wasn't much evidence to prove that taking t3 and t4 separately would make me feel any better but agreed to let me try.i am not claiming this be a cure for the syptoms that go with hydrothyoidism but i did begin to feel more alert, but more important for other readers i began to loose weight without trying. but i wouldn't go to the gp and say that, if you wanted to try it as they dont like you to use the medication for that. i had to reduce my thyroxine and take t3 (liothyronine sodium 20mcg twice a day) hope it works for others.
u ugly, fat son of a bitch. <3 xx stop eating C: xxxxxxxxxx*+*+*+mwa
Hi Muse
For some extroardinary reason the NHS seems to think people all fit exactly into their preconceived 'boxes'. I have Hashimoto's and had been on T4 for many years but increasingly struggled. I had tests done privately which showed that I was not converting T4 to T3, but I was told by the Consultant that there was no way this could be assessed (ie this was piffle) and that as my T4 levels were 'normal' on levothyroxine, so what was the problem? I had just handed him a list of some 25 symptoms that are associated with low thyroid of which I had confirmed problems with about 20 of them - he glanced at it and ignored it!!! You can imagine I was less than pleased with his comments.
Eventually I found a brilliant private doctor who practices Functional Medicine who put me on to T3 as well, and he confirmed that not only is my immune system knocking out my thyroxine almost as fast as I produce it but I am not converting it into the active form of T3. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that there is a place for glandular thyroid supplement for some people, but the pharmaceutical companies want to stop glandular being supplied to patients. It is becoming increasingly difficult to get it. See the report .
At last I am starting to recover my health, but it has been at the loss of a great deal in my life. Now, had I been put on Armour Thyroid in the first place perhaps my life would have been very different - and I'd not have been labelled as 'always got something wrong with her' The one bonus it has lead me to learning nutritional therapy and EFT and finding someone who could help - no thanks to the limited parameters allowed in the NHS for thyroid problems.
thyroid EAST YORKSHIRE
carolineN..reading your blog is like reading my own story..i am desperate to find someone in east/west/north yorkshire who will help me to at least try Armour
also does anyone know of dr stephen atkin in hull..does he have an open mind re thyroid t3 t4 tests armour thyroxine etc
Hi Babs
Sorry I don't know Dr Stephen Atkin in Hull - I decided to go my own way after the consultant was so useless. Have a look at Dr Barry Durrant Peafield who has clinics around the country. He is private, but quite honestly it is worth it just to get sorted!
