Hi everyone!
I'm new to this site today, so I hope I'm on the right page..please bear with me! I was diagnosed with underactive thyroid last April, but my doc guesses that I've been underactive thyroid for several years..I think thats prob right re my symptoms.

Anyway I really just wondered if any other 'hypo's' out their have the same prob as me? I have put on 3 stone over the last 7 years, previously I could lose the weight with sensible dieting but I'm just getting bigger and bigger! I thought that when I started taking thyroxin my weight would fall off...but no such luck!!! (the weight gain has slowed down a bit though)

OK ...so my Q is: has anyone found a diet that works-while on thyroxin ?!

Even you you hav'nt its nice to be here!

Thanks

Kathy h

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi Kathy my partner has an underactive thyroid has had it for years, if you have only just been put on thyroxin it will take a little while and some tests before you get to the amount of throxin you need.
But you will lose weight all be it slowly and when you get to the weight you are wanting you go back to your doctor and he will adjust your dosage of Thyroxin.
But he said it does take some time to lose weight, but keep going and all will be well.
Keep us informed how you get on

Chrissy

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi Everyone,

After the birth of my daughter (almost eleven years ago) , Ideveloped a large lump on my thyroid and had all the classic signs of under active thyroid...you know....feeling as if your in a fog, walking through blamange, cold, weight gain, loss of hair on arms and legs, outer edge of eyebrows and ballooning to a size 20 to mention a few :o/. However, my thryoid test came back in the *normal range*....Although, I argued they didnt know what my 'normal range' was as I had never been tested before, I still could not get treated.
The hospital couldnt obtain enough of the fluid in the cyst to say whether or not the lump was cancerous sooo they wanted me to have my thyroid taken out. They also told me that they may accidently snip my patharoid glandand Imay end up sounding like a man ohh the list went on with what could go wrong.
Therefore went with my gut feeling told them I was born with my thyroid wanted to die with it too -andunless they could actually say it was cancer I was going to find alternative ways of healing. (Im in no way saying this is the way to go for everyone).

Thus, brings me to where I am to-day. To cut a very longggg story short. Discovered Reiki & reflexology now have Reiki 1 & 2 andA & P also studying and almost qualified in reflexology. Im also due to start: nutritionand stress management courses and in September Indian Head Massage.

I feel as if it was the reflexology treatments with the help of Reiki that helped me balance my body again and bring it back to equilibrium.I know complimentary/alternative medicine is not for everyone andmedical advice should always be sort first.
However, I believe we all owe it to ourselves to be proactive in our ownwellbeingnot to wait for a pill to fix it.

Sorry Iwent off rambling ......do your own research, read books talk to other people - knowledge is power!

PS:
Just in case your wondering I am now a size 12.

love & light

Christine :o)

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi

Thanks, Good advice to do my own research, only trouble is the moreI do the more differing answers/adviceI find! I guess its down to trying out stuff till Ifind what works for me.

I have to admit the weight gain is really starting to get to me, I've always tried and succeded with healthy diets before and have steered clear of any fad diets, however I'm getting kinda desparate and thinking about 'lighter life diet'...well not actually a diet in my book...just starving! ...you really dont eat soild food for months (which goes againts any thing I believe is healthy for you but...) I think this may be the only way I'll shift the added 3 stones!

They provided you with 'healthy' liquid meal replacements and give regular councelling, I dont know....Im not sure if I should really even be considering such a low calorie diet when I'm on thyroxin/underactive thyroidetc!

Sorry, now its me whos rambling on!!

Has anyone out there tried this diet while on thyroxin?

Thanks for the suggestions - stay well,

Kathy

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi Kathy,

Me again :o)

It was the reflexology that helped me bring my body back to balance. Have you tried any therapies?

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi Christine,

Thanks again, I dont get to my PC too often ,sorry for slow responce!

I have not tried alternative therapies as yet, but I did find relfexology very calming when I was pregant...many years ago.(!).....I will try this again, but at present I have no spare cash at all, so i may have to wait a while, but I will try this...even if I dont lose weight, it will be calming!

Thanks

Keep smiling!

Kathy

RE: overweight and underactive thyroid!

Hi Kathy,

Dont know where about you live. But our local colleges that teach reflexology offer treatments at very low cost. The one I am doing my course atonly charges £3..soooo let your fingers do the walking and see if there are any near by where you live that you can go to.

lots of love & light

Christine :o)

thyroid and weight gain

Hi all
I can identify with everything you have all said so far, the weight gain and mind fogging particularly. I only started on thyroxine yesterday so I wont expect miracles with the weight loss but what about the other stuff how long does that take to feel better.

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid when I was 7. I now take 225mg's daily. When I was growing up I really resented having to take pills everyday, so I didn't! I never had a problem with my weight and was a size 8-10 until my mid 20's. Then the weight started to creep on. I went up to a size 16 a year ago (I'm now 33) but in the last 6 months I've lost over a stone and am wearing a 12-14 at the moment.

I've probably been taking my thyroxin properly for two years now and I do find it hard to shift the weight, but it is going.

Kathy, I really wouldn't bother with Lighter Life. My old boss did it. She lost loads of weight and looked fantastic.............for about 6 months then she put it all back on again.

Another girl that I worked with did it. She lost 10 stone and looked amazing. She was the girl that the leaders used as a success example to their groups because she lost so much so quickly. But as soon as she started eating food again, she just couldn't stop. Within no time she'd put it all back on AND some. She's only short and she's almost as wide as she is tall.

Having seen the success of my boss and my colleague (before they put the weight back on) my mum's friend also started Lighter Life. She lost a fair bit of weight. But she's put most of it back on again too.

So out of the three people that I know that have done Lighter Life, 100% of them put the weight back on!

You may find it harder than most to lose your weight, but if you eat sensibly and excersise, you will shift it, and it will stay off too. It's just a matter of good old will power and determination.

Good luck:D

regards lighterlight, it was the same for my Mum, she lost 4 stone with it but put it back on once she stopped even with the councelling and all.

there is no substitute for a healthy diet and exercise unfortunately - I just need to follow my own advice 🙁

Hi there

I can relate to your post.
Ive been told that its quite common to gain weight once started on thyroid meds, and it can take quite sometime. And that the last things to get back to 'normal' are weight and libido! :o( Booo!
Also reg min 20 mins exercise is important as well as cutting down on high glycaemic foods. So a low carb diet is helpful and ive seen it suggested that eating small amounts say every four hours is good getting the ole metabolism going!

I know it is SO frustrating re the weight gain issue.Good luck with it.

Hi,
I've been on thyroxine for about a year now after being diagnosed with an unactive thyroid after my son was born. My Mum has it too and my Aunty. I'm currently on 100mcgrm's a day, although I'm going back to the doc's on Tuesday because I've started jogging to try and lose some weight for my hols and it just aint happening. I'll prob have to have another blood test to check my levels but it is very frustrating!
