Hi all,

Has anyone here ever been hypnotised, and if so- how did it feel?

I went to a hypnotist last year and he couldn't put me under. I think I read somewhere that Edgar Cayce couldn't be hypnotised for a long time but of course when he finally went into a trance he started his psychic readings.

I'd love to hear people's experiences.

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

Hi

I had a session today actually which was very good. I too have been to someone where I did not relax and thus nothing positive came out of it.

We go in and out of trance states all the time, for example when you drive a car and think of something else and don't remember the bit of road you have just driven down in very much detail. It is all about feeling trust and being able to relax with the right person. It can be hugely beneficial if you find a good practitioner which I am glad I just have.

It is like when I have healing I am in the room kind of present however not quite there that lovely floating feeling. I got the same today with my hypnotherapist and that is a good feeling because I know I have let go of control and allowed her to do her work:)

Hi Petal

I had a fantasic experience.

I passed my driving test, first time, flaming miracle, in 1987. From the day I pasted I never drove??? The lessons scared me to death as did the thought of driving.

In 2000 we moved to the countryside. i hated it. Was used to people/shops. So decided I must get my head around driving. In 2001 I booked a fresher course. Hated it. Crided the night before ever lesson. Finally decided to get hypnosis to maybe overcome my fear. My problem was that I couldn't understand why I was so scared!!! For a million pounds I couldn't justify my fear. I had two sessions. OMG. On the second session I went back to being around 8 years old. I was sat in the back of the car. It was pea soup type fog.
My dad said to my mum...

Sheila, it is so dangerous driving, we will be lucky if we are not killed driving home in this.

THEN another memory came where dad said it was too dangerous to drive (heavy snow) so he walked me the 10 miles to my school. On the way a car passed us. Because my dad had said 'too dangerous' I panicked, jumped on him, knocked him over and got into trouble. I thought that the car was going to hit us, although it was miles away, because my dad had again said 'too dangerous to drive'.

Once I unlocked these memories it has changed my life...I drive...and I love the freedom of getting out the village. All because my dad said, inocently, too dangerous to drive.

The best £90 I have ever spent.

Much Love
Sharon

Wow Sharon - that's fascinating. I didn't know you could pull up old memories under hypnosis like that.

I can't really remember much about my early childhood but I think if I could retrieve it and dump it, it may help with my asthma. Maybe I'll try another hypnotist.

Thanks

Hi Petal

Neither did I know you could pull up old memories. If the Truth be told I went to the hypontists to hopefully put the 'you can do it' into me, like when folk go to 'you can stop smoking'. If you would have offered me a million pounds before that session I honestly could never have remembered those two accounts I told you about, never in a million years.

Just goes to show doesn't it? What gets stored in our mind. I find it amazing I really do

Much Love Sharon

Ive been to see a hypnotherapist and all I can say is that everyone has the impression youll be in some kind of trance, this is just not the case.

To be honest, after practially every session I had to tell him that I found it quite difficult when he started the relaxation process because I couldnt keep my eyes shut, it felt like I was straining to keep them shut lol However, each session got easier and I started to relax more.

You have to find someone that you trust, someone that explains things thoroughly before 'hypnotising' you. The weird thing is you dont believe youre actually 'under' because youre so fully aware of whats going on around you. But when you realise youve been relaxing for 50minutes and it feels like 5 its quite bizarre.

The only thing I can say is find a registered & qualified hypnotherapist and speak to them over the phone, if you get the impression that they're friendly and informative then go with them... I rang a few before I found the person who just 'clicked'

And now... Im training to be a Hypnotherapist myself. I cant wait!

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

Hi,

As Sue says, we actually go into trance quite a lot during our normal waking lives. Driving, watching TV, surfing the net, and twice a day every day just as we're going off to sleep and just as we're waking up.
Imagine you're going to sleep. You can still hear all the little noises that the house makes and your breathing and so forth. You're not quite asleep, nor are you wide awake. But if the doorbell went, you'd instantly become alert and able to go and answer it. That's trance!

Dave Ellman (who created my favourite style of hypnosis) said: "There's no such thing as a hypnotist. I can't make you go into a trance, only you can do that. Going into a trance is simply a question of learning how to go into a trance" The general consensus these days is that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis.

Anyone can learn how to go into a trance, but it does take a little help to be able to go into the deeper levels.

Occasionally, there may be a reason for a particular individual not to want to go into a trance - which could be completely unconscious. For example, last week I was demonstrating Ellman's technique to a group and everybody was deeply under except one person. She had been in hospital with a serious heart complaint and nearly died; the trance state for her was very, very scary (for her, it felt too much like the feeling she had in hospital) and needless to say she resisted very successfully.

To learn about going into a trance, here's a thought which can help. You know that if you clenched your fist (say) as tight as you could, it would stay clenched as tight as possible until you decided to release it. Conversely, if you knew how to, you could relax any group of muscles in the body so that they would stay relaxed until you decided to remove the relaxation! Hypnosis offers you a way of relaxing the whole body and mind which will stay that way until you decide to stop relaxing.

So Petal, do try another hypnotist! I know of quite a good one on the Isle of Wight!!!! 😉

Love
Jonathan

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

There must be lots of different types of hypnosis out there (must find out more about it!) and I expect different types suit different people. A few years ago I decided to see a hypnotherapist about my needle phobia. In the first session we didn't even touch on the problem, just practiced going into a trance, and it seemed like it was going to be a very drawn out process, so I didn't go back and the phobia stayed with me. Then last year I decided to tackle it again (or more like had to as I had to have a blood test!). The hypnotherapist I saw this time worked very quickly and didn't delve into my past too much. She gave me a self hypnosis tape with her voice on for me to listen to daily for a week before my first treatment so that I could get used to getting into the trance state. Then when I saw her it was very quick. The way she worked was to replace my feelings of fear with a positive emotion (in my case a sense of pride and achievement) - is this a specific type of hypnosis?? Anyone in the know?? I only saw her one more time before the blood test (a few weeks apart) and in between I had to practice daily. My second session lasted only 20 mins although it felt like an hour and a half! By this time it was so easy to get into the trance due to the daily practice that she literally just clicked her fingers and I was under!! After the second session I did have a bit of a relapse the day before the blood test where I suddenly went into a panic (as I would have done before) but luckily I had told my husband about the whole process and he talked me through it which got me back on track. This made me relaise how complicated the mind is. I used the suggestions through the blood test too, and although I didn't *enjoy* it I didn't embarrass myself with hysterical crying as I would have done before!! Also since then I have had my ears pierced, my tetanus booster and I'm going to Bosnia for which I'll need 5 injections!

I'd recommend you give it anotehr go Petal with a different practitioner or try EFT instead. I have used this since of other phobias and would highly recommend Jonathan (aren't you lucky he's so near?!!).

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

Hello everyone 😀
I did think about going to Jonathan (even sent him an email if I remember rightly). I'll have to wait a while though - MOT and tax due on the car.
The chap I tried before was nice enough and I wasn't resisting as far as I'm aware. I was just wide awake and it wasn't working. He did give me a self-hypnosis CD to try at home and that didn't work for me either. I don't even get groggy with a pre-med before an operation - I think my conscious mind just doesn't switch off. Even when I sleep I have vivid dreams.

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

You sound just like me Petal! I don't respond to pre-med either and the only time I had to have a general (when I was 4) they had to give me enough gas to send an elephant to sleep!! When I came out of theatre apparently they expected me to be asleep for hours but I woke up the minute I was out! Since then local anaethetics don't work and I have to be given double, and other medication has to be doubled up to. I think I like to be in control at all times. At least I know I'm not the only one like this!

I have problems with visualisations, even when they're guided, I'm always somewhere else. I wish I could master them, but It's almost like I question their effectiveness before I even start, so I'm sure I would be hopeless at hypnotism.

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

Hi Petal

I'm actually training in hypnosis and actually its still a very misunderstood hollistic therapy.

Jonathon is correct in saying that we enter trance many times a day, we do this without even realising sometimes. Perhaps you have had the experience of driving for instance and you seem to switch off by thinking about other things and then suddenly come back into the perspective of driving.

A therapist is merely there to guide you under hypnosis and to ensure that the suggestions (words that re-write the areas of the subconscious) that are used are correctly administered. Most therapists nowadays will allow the client to word the suggestion so that the client will easily absorb the information and accept the suggestions because it is within their own context of writing.

There are so many mis-conceptions about hypnosis, the treatment itself is very straighforward however there are many ways used to enter hypnosis - I too favour the Dave Ellman approach as it is simple, direct and I find reaches trance quickly.

In order to reach a state of hypnosis you must feel at ease with the therapist, as this will detemine whether you are relaxed in their presence or not and will hinder any chances of entering this relaxed state.

If you were unable to be hypnotised Petal then it could be that you just didn't feel comfortable or that the therapist did not listen to you correctly from the start. People have variations in the levels of going into trance, some go easily and others have to be led along a more detailed routine by the therapist.

I'd recommend that you visit another therapist who will provide you with the time to sit and chat with you about hypnosis and then will gradually allow you to become relaxed enough to enter this trance state.

Please feel free to PM or email me if you would like me to go through it in further detail with you.

Please let us know how you get on.

Love & Blessings

Neil

That's kind of how I feel Aromababe. When I used to go to Yoga and people were falling asleep during the visualisation I was always wide awake and 'bored' waiting to go home. I did TRY to follow them but I never got to that sort of 'fuzzy' place they all seemed to go to.

Dear Petal & Aromababe,

The ability to visualise isn't important for going into trance.
If you can relax your eyelids (like when you're really tired and they relax all by themselves ;)) then you can go into a trance!

I tried hypnosis about 10 years ago to stop smoking and must admit I felt no different during or after. She wanted me to visualise the cigarette as a big slimy slug but I was tring hard not to giggle. It wasn't at all what I expected and I never went back. Perhaps I should have perservered more. Needless to say, it didn't help with the horrible habit!

Hi Taz

Ask Jonathan to tell you all about EFT for smoking - you'll be off the nasty cancer sticks in no time!

I'm surprised anyone smokes after seeing the latest government ad - the fat in those veins makes me reach every time.

RE: You are feeling very sleepy....

Thanks Petal, might look into that at some point.

Actually I did give up - many times - using just will power. The longest I gave up for was 15 months (I gave up during both pregnancies and breast feeding). Stupidly I have always started again for no particular reason. I am not a heavy smoker though as I have to smoke outside the back door when the children are around and am planning to give up again.

I agree, the new advert is particularly disgusting.
