Isn't it annoying when you want to make a call and its an 0870 or 0845 number. I get free calls on 01 or 02 numbers so really begrudge having to pay to call a company.
Just been on this site:
SAYNOTO0870.COM
You type in the company name or the known phone number and hey-presto! you have the proper phone number to call.
I have bookmarked it and intend to use it as a matter of principle.
Hope it helps a few other people out there.
RE: 0870 - say no
Well done daisychain. I too object, particularly to 0870 numbers where you actually pay the company some money to call them. Sky spring to mind straight away, and they then have the cheek to keep you hanging on to an automated voice system.
I will try your suggestion next time I am presented with an 0845 or 0870 number.
Hell, guess I'll owe you a few pints for this one!
Thanks. Windy.
RE: 0870 - say no
I don't get free calls to 01 and 02 numbers so I don't mind the 0845 (lo-call) numbers. I never really call 0870 numbers, but i'll keep that website bookmarked just in case I ever need to. Thanks

RE: 0870 - say no
Hello daisychain
It's good to have this one brought to the fore again, and thanks for posting. It's been in the Interesting Websites forum, but not recently.
Yes, 0870 are the most expensive to call... apart from the dreaded 090 numbers of course ... plus the waiting, number-punching and general brain damage around their use [sm=banghead.gif]
0845 were, IIRC, also discussed in the Business & Marketing forum a while ago, from the business POV of having one. I do, patched onto my landline, for the benefit of those who may be calling at national rate. However, I usually recommend to anyone who may be calling me regularlythatthey check with their phone provider because they aren't always cheaper than 01 or 02 numbers.
0800 numbers are the free ones, though you can still get to do a lot of waiting and button-pushing.
When I first discovered the

website, I made myself a table of numbersin Word, which I keep on the desktop for ref. Very handy. It's also worth asking in some local chain stores for their 01 number and noting it, because not all are on the SayNoTo website.
Here's another useful site, for getting to talk to a human being, quickly, rather than an automated response system:

RE: 0870 - say no
Good idea - thanks for that. I remember reading a while back a letter to a paper from an American who was shocked at the idea of customers having to PAY to complain or get any service. He said Americans would never put up with that sort of thing. I suspect the only reason we do is that most people don't realise how much these calls are costing them.
RE: 0870 - say no
Been using that site for about 6 months now, am sure I read there is a say no to 0845 numbers as well. The thing is, if there are alternative numbers to phone and there should be, they should be made accessible to everyone. For example, I sometimes pay my credit cards over the telephone and on my cards, apart from Tesco, all the numbers are 0870.
People who dont have internet access wont be able to use this site. At 12p a minute its shameful that credit card companies and banks make more money out of people who might not have that much to start with.
I rarely use my landline phone any longer, I speak to friends on msn messenger and my mobile phone, if I put 10 pounds in a month I get free weekend texts, there are ways of cutting costs but its finding them.
