Hi All
was not quite sure where to post this, but felt that someone on this forum would be able to help!
Do you know why we say things to the universe 3 times (e.g repeat reiki symbol mantras, affirmations, etc)? When I go to a yoga class, my teacher always does a reading at the end, and repeats it 3 times. Is it one for mind, one for body, one for spirit? I know that there is the Holy Trinity, so the number 3 is obviously important, but would just llike some clarification as to why!
Much obliged!

RE: WWhy Three Times?
I think it's do with how the brain works to re-affirm somehting - even politicians use it, since Maggie Thatcher made it in/famous! [sm=eeeK.gif]
There are other numbers of course used for such purposes;-
108 is the number usually found on chanting beads in various systems and rounds of chants are usually at least 3, then any odd number upwards.
And.
RE: WWhy Three Times?
There is a similar use of 3 and other odd numbers in Chinese medicine.
I believe the significance is that it symbolises a thing that can be continued: so, an even number suggests completion, and therefore no further improvement, whereas an odd number suggests leading on to another.
Apart from 1, which doesn't suggest any rhythm at all, 3 is the lowest odd number, and so implies very gently the suggestion that the prayer/ritual etc is not finite.
Sorry - that sounds really badly explained - hope you can make sense of it!
Best wishes

Hi Artemis
It refers to always using an odd number of moxa cones, usually 3 or 5 per point. Never 4 or 6!

RE: WWhy Three Times?
Hi,
Three is the perfect number. It has a beginning, a middle and an end.
Angels are invoked by repeating the invocation three times. It links to the Trinity (Father, Son & Holy Ghost) and, as has been mentioned - mind, body, spirit. There are also Thought, Word and Deed - and Father, Mother, Child. Many other examples of the groupings of three.
That's as I see it.
RE: WWhy Three Times?
To be sure ,to be sure, to be sure !:D
RE: WWhy Three Times?
Are you absolutely sure, Paul?:D:D:D
RE: WWhy Three Times?
Hmm the power of three, Need I say more, When I am invoking the energies I call upon the Angels three times.

RE: WWhy Three Times?
[color="#6600cc"]This question came up in my Reiki 1 course. We had a Chinese gentleman who said that he was brought up to know that 3 represented life (while 4 represented death). There was also someone who had a friend who was a numerologist, and in numerology 3 is also good (can't remember the wording that she was given though)
RE: WWhy Three Times?
Why 3 times ??......cos reiki is witchcraft, but dont take my word for it, research it.
RE: Why Three Times?
Spirit is usually a triune, but I don't know if they always seem to know it, they generally talk about them selves a "I" ;).
RE: Why Three Times?
People do link the saying of things 3 times to all sorts of reasons, spiritual, religion etc., but as was mentioned all that way back, it has been shown that saying things three times helps to activate the intention in the unconscious mind. The first time something is said it wakes up the mind, the 2nd time implants the intention and the 3rd time makes the unconscious act on it.
That's not to say that it doesn't have some spiritual or religious (or even witchcraft wolfen! ;)) reasoningbehind it.

RE: Why Three Times?
Wolfen - with respect to reiki, specifically Usui reiki as I have no knowledge of other 'reiki' systems, the use of repeating the names given to the symbols/energy specifically three times is not something that would have been originally taught, rather this is another 'add on' deriving from other systems, especially new age beliefs (such as numerology and traditional superstition).
The main point of reciting the name of the symbol/energy relates to the concept of kotodama or jumon which involves the correct intonation of the words given to the symbol. The kotodama itself is believed to create a particular force that would then be used to acheive a specific result.
So while the saying of things three time may very well be witchcraft, reiki itself is not witchcraft. You don't have to take my word for it though because there are plenty of sources out there that will tell you the same without all the new age claptrap.

RE: WWhy Three Times?
Hi all
Perhaps the most famous three times
Jesus predicted to his disciples that they would "fall away" from him on the night of his arrest. Peter replied, "Even if all desert you, I will never desert you." Jesus answered, "In truth I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times." Confronted after Jesus had been arrested, Peter did deny knowing Jesus three times to avoid being arrested himself. When he heard a cock crow, he remembered what Jesus had said, and wept.

Interesting though, there are two more sets of threes: Maiden, Mother & Crone (if, from memory, I've used the right words here). Also that there are three degrees of initiation into the Craft.
And that quite a number of leading lights in the Pagan world generally, including well known published authors, are themselves Reiki Masters.
Not intended to add grist to your mill, since I also don't know what your mill is, merely an observation.
BTW, I've PMd you about the boxes 😉

well iam very temped too solas!!...but ive had rather too much psychic* and not so psychic *coming my way of late, suffice to say a decade down the line iam so disgusted with the attitude and disgraceful ethos of my once reiki master that ive trashed and burnt all my manuals and certificates [yes really!]...dont get me wrong their is some genuine spiritual essence buried under all the contrived non-sense........its their somewhere:D, should have followed my guidance in the first place and stayed well clear....but hey, older and wiser now:) ...no right or wrong actions, just outcomes....and one thats left a very bad taste in my mouth. p.s thx for the posting info holistic;) ...grist?...is that like pork scratchings??...:D
RE: Why Three Times?
Hi wolfen, I think it would be of benefit to share your experiences because there are a lot of other beliefs and systems that have been woven into Usui reiki and are passed off as reiki when they couldn't be further from the truth. I understand if you do not wish to share this information but I do not understand why the psychic or non-psychic **** has anything to do with sharing your experience because it is up to individuals if they do not like what you say.
My own view is that we should say what we think and believe at all times because going against the grain is sometimes the only way to progress past misconceptions and misunderstandings, although in some cases these are quite deliberate.
Look forward to hearing them, if ever I do.

RE: Why Three Times?
uncle rico, this is very pro-reiki forum still despite the name change with many on here with vested interests/cosy second incomesconnected with it...and ive been out-spoken and made myself un-welcome in the past due to it......so i would do better not to have people giving me the evils:D, for anyone suspicious of their masters teachings then they should firmly challenge them on it with info they have researced......and then watch the manner how they react....that should tell thestudent whatthey need to know about exactly what space their 'master' is coming from;) , id like to say more of my experiences but feel it would make good bookmaterial as opposed to this often shallow and very baised forum.
RE: Why Three Times?
I hear what you are saying and I agree wholeheartedly about the forum being shallow and bias at times. There are people on here who would rather not here what others have to say for reasons best known to them.
As Oscar Wilde said "To disagree with three-fourths of the British public is one of the requisites of sanity".
RE: Why Three Times?
In reply to Uncle Rico and woolfen
We all follow what we believe and develop the method that we feel is right to give healing to healees. I am aware of how deeply passionate people are about thier strand of path of reiki. There will always be purest and those who like to experiment. Surely that makes debate and we learn from each other.
We all have to follow our own heart and if the reiki master we choose is not for us then we do have free choice and we can change until we find the path that feels right to us.
We have to be mindful that our own egos do not get in the way - an old freind once said to me that you learn the most when you listen. Debate is good and I think it would be very sad if many of us feel we cannot express ourselves in this forum we have so much to gain from these discussion - I know we have a moderator but maybe we need to have a thread where we look at how we can discuss aspects of reiki without feeling upset put down or dismissed.
This was on HP the other day and I feel it is relavent

Banish Ego
Ego is not just having a big head. Ego is present every time you feel any kind of fear, or hear yourself saying "That's mine!". The truth tells us that nothing is 'mine' or 'yours', we are all trustees, and fear is only present where there is the voice of attachment. So where there is ego, there is attachment, and where there is attachment there is fear, and where there is fear there cannot be love and where there is no love there is misery. This is why there is so much unhappiness in the world. Detach from everything, and you will banish ego, fear will be no more, only then can true love return, and our oldest friend happiness will feel it is then safe to make a reappearance in your life..

RE: Why Three Times?
No worries, Somerset Angel. In the meantime, I've drawn your concerns to the other members of the moderating team, but as we've now gone a little off the topic of Why Three Times? please feel free to further discussion along the lines you suggest.
I'm only sorry that the almost inevitable lack of time prevented me from posting on your previous thread:

perhaps you would like to continue. The last post was in January, so it's not THAT old ... this one was started in 2004 and revived in the middle!
