Can someone please explain if we have a receiving and exiting hand when practising reiki? It has been commented on and I notice far more sensastion in my left hand rather than right. (I am right handed by the way.)

Is this normal to feel far more heat/sensation in one hand?

Thank you

Hi ya Drakey

This is not an unusual sensation. It can different for different people, but as a rule of thumb used in energy healing - the right hand is the giving hand and the left hand is the receiving one. If this is true for you then the left hand is also good for aura scanning being more sensitive.

But some may say isn't Reiki unipolar? Yes this is still true and Reiki works perfectly well through both hands. You could even "project Reiki" through any digit, the eyes, the 3rd eye, and even the feet (in a Thai Massage, Barefoot Shiatsu, Chivutti sort of way)!

What the sensations you are feeling is an aspect of how energy flows through your body.

Hope this may answer you question.

Best Wishes

Reiki Pixie

That is a really interesting point. When I attune students I can feel the energy from their hands, and in virtually every case, one hand is more energised than the other. The more energised hand is the one I suggest they use for Byosen Reikan-Ho scanning. I also tell them they can control the way the energy flows out of their hands by using their mind to direct the energy more evenly out of both hands. I am not sure of the reasons why one hand is naturally more energised, but I have in the past thought it could be to do with which side of the brain is more dominant, the intuitive side or the intellectual side. I have tried to see with my students if there was a connection, for example, if the more intuitive students have the left hand more energised and the more practical students have the right hand more energised. I still haven't quite seen a definite pattern yet.

Interesting question! My right hand has always 'felt' to be the stronger for energy flowing through it. Years ago at a conference workshop we did an exercise where we sent energy out of our right hand and imagined it going all round the world and coming back 'in' through the left. To my amazement my left hand moved as if receiving a direct hit as the energy came back lol.I think it will be different for each person but as long as the energy is flowing then does it matter? Just a thought!

If Reiki were like electricity and able to move only when turned on, there would be sense in the idea of in and out. But energy from source is always present and always flowing. Therefore it is a limiting thought to imagine that this energy needs a receiving and presenting hand. (Not a true analogy, but do you have a receiving and presenting lung?)

We receive through every avenue possible at all times. We are able to share this pure Love at all times IF we do not put any conditions upon it.

We get muddled up in the idea that WE will decide to whom, what, where, how and why this endless, wowerful energy will be directed. It is pure only if we do not set conditions upon it.

Experiments, intentions, feelings of superiority, involvement of ego and doubts all pollute the purity. Even questions like this, when they make us wonder about specifics, limit our abilities to be fully involved with sharing pure healing energy.

I'm not sure if this quite true for everyone. Studies have shown that undirected channelled energy has little impact on illnesses and injuries, whereas concsiously directed energy does have significant healing properties. Using the power of the mind to direct and focus the energy has been demonstrated to have much greater healing effect than passively channelling the energy. I do not see that using our gift of consciousness wisely as a negative or unpure thing. In fact, I see our mind as a big part of our healing gift.

I find that the sensation in each of the hands changes from time to time and client to client. It also varies due to byosen (scanning for "issues" in the body) and then will change as I focus on those specific issues to treat them.

You'll also probably find that the types of sensations you get will change the more you practice Reiki.

Can you give me references for these studies please?

Thank you all so much for your informative replies. I have been a spiritual healer with our church far longer than I have been a channel for reiki. I find the energies different but enjoy working with each style.

For some strange reason my original question was again posted rather than my thanks for all your kind and inforformative replies!

I have been a spiritual healer at our spiritualist church far longer than I have worked with reiki. I enjoy both styles of healing, although I find the energies involved to be slightly different.

Hi Chris,

Here are the references I had to hand which are relevant:

1. Ader, R. & Cohen, N. 1975 Behaviorally conditioned immunosuppression. Psychosom. Med, 1975; 37: 333-340.

2. Rein G., Ph.D. October 1996 Effect of conscious intention on human DNA. Proceeds of the International Forum on New Science, Denver, CO.

3. McCraty R., Ph.D. Atkinson M., and Tomasino D., B.A. 2003 Modulation of DNA conformation by heart-focused intention Institute of HeartMath, Publication No. 03-008. Boulder Creek, CA.

I do have more, I read through hundreds of studies for my Reiki book!

Thanks for the references Omega 1 - I'll have to wait until my Athens account becomes active to look them up though!

This is an interesting thread. My first thought was that our bodies aren't balanced physically (right handed/ left handed or one ear bigger than the other) so why should we expect them to be balanced in other ways?

It could also be that the energy is the same but our awareness is different.
