Dear All,
There is something that I wanted to share with you. We are all familiar with the Reiki precepts, and the different translations that are available in the West, some closer to and some further away from the original ones. But there is some new information about them that I thought you might find interesting.
Mikao Usui’s precepts were actually quite similar to precepts being taught by many other Tendai and Zen teachers in his time, and an accurate translation of Usui's precepts would be something like this:
For today only, do not anger, do not worry.
Be humble. Be honest in your dealings with others.
Be compassionate towards yourself and others.
The precepts are Usui Sensei's own wording of an earlier set of precepts used in a Tendai sect of Shugendo (with which he had contact) and which date back to the 9th century. These precepts are a way of addressing aspects of the Buddhist eight-fold path, but in a more simplified form, and are as follows:
Do not bear anger, for anger is illusion.
Do not be worried because fear is distraction.
Be true to your way and your being.
Show compassion to yourself and others.
Because this is the centre of Buddhahood.
Best wishes,

Hi Soar,

I know exactly what the precepts look like in Japanese! In fact, I had them drawn out for me by a Japanese Master Calligrapher, and - sorry for the commercial plug - if you visit my web site you can order a beautiful A3 print of the precepts in Japanese calligraphy, on 260 gsm ivory card. It looks absolutely wonderful and I feel so lucky to have been led to Eri Takase (Master Calligrapher) who drew them for me.
Best wishes,

ON this topic I found the original Reiki handbook of Dr Mikao Usui by lotus press isbn 0-914955-57-8 very interesting it certainly gave me a different insight from that of the reiki master i did leve 1 and 2. It did give more insight to the buddist aspect. I felt my first reiki master was too christian based and when I read further other thoughts and perspectives sat more comfortably with as with the reiki principals being discussed here. The book I have suggested has the original japanese scripts.
Love and light
RE: The Reiki Precepts
To anyone who is considering getting one of the prints from Taggart,
I bought one a year ago and have had it framed. the quality of the card used is excellent as is the print. I would recommend it.
Thanks Taggart

That is an interesting book, but a lot of what is presented in it has nothing to do with Mikao Usui, unfortunately. The 'hand positions for different ailments' were developed by Dr Hayashi. Usui Sensei's system wasn't really about treating other people, and his treatment approach was simple and intuitive, and free from 'techniques'.
Best wishes,
