Hi Everyone

I know there are already two threads discussing various aspects of teaching, but my thoughts having been steered towards this slant on the topic, I wondered if it should have a thread of its own. So just a few:

Are teachers born or made? My personal experience of having been taught by teachers, from schooldays upwards, is that the person with the most knowledge does not necessarily make the best teacher. A teacher is someone who facilitates the student in their own learning process. People learn by doing - I most certainly do - not by having someone stand in front of them delivering a lecture.

Personally, I love teaching, I find it most rewarding, whether it's Reiki, drumming, dowsing or whatever else. It's seeing faces light up, it's the Ooh, I can do it, I can do it! 🙂

Is it harder for a Reiki teacher to ascertain the degree of the student's learning outcome than with something more tangible? Example: When I teach people to drum, the results are instantly identifiable. We can all hear it!!! 🙁

Is there any truth in the little saying:

Those who can - DO
Those who can't - TEACH

Like you Holistic I love to teach. There is such a joy in helping some one to achieve a new skill knowledge or what ever. I think it is a privalage to teach and the best reward is you learn something in return. Every time I teach I always come away with something myself.

I most certainly do not believe those who teach can't I think it a saying thought up by some clever ......... [:'(]who was unable to teach!

Love and light

RE: Teachers - born or made???

When i was at teacher training college all those years ago other clever dicks said
those who can't.......teach and those who can't teach .....teach teachers lolnone of it true.

I taught for years, children of all abilities and all ages specialising eventually in special educational needs and in particular autistic spectrum disorder . i also wrote and taught course for adults and I loved it all but about 5 years ago i decided i needed a fresh challenge and wanted to see if i could do something else. My current job is my second since leaving teaching and the first job i have had for over 20 years that doesn't involve children. I sometimes teach adults but am more of a strategist. I miss teaching but only the bit that actually involved teaching not all the other stuff and since leaving i have reclaimed some me time and qualified in massage IHM , do dowsing and of course my Reiki but

strangely, I have no current interest inteaching Reiki or any other therapy but maybe thats an adventure waiting in the wings

are teachers born or made ? I have met many good, bad and indifferent but I think good teachers are born and made better with training and experience
sorry that was a bit of a ramble but why use 10 words when you can use 100;)

The best teachers are those with knowledge and a passion for the subject they teach.
If the passion is there, it is easy to see, and this will inspire interest and a passion to learn in the student.
I am in college at the moment and looking at my exam results and my teacher, I do better when a teacher loves the subject they teach.

I love making people aware of Reiki and of their abilities within Reiki.

I suppose I have always had an ability to teach, but then hasn't everyone who has an enthusiasm about a subject the ability to pass-on their enthusiasm to others? 🙂

You need knowledge and a passion for sharing it. Also some empathy to be able to accept that even it is obvious to you, it may not be to the student. And some humility.
I think that anyone can learn soem basics of teaching, but for osem it comes naturally and for others they need to work more at it. It is like being a therapist. Anyon ecan learn the moves for a massage, but not everyone will have a natural "healing touch".

I agree. However that doesn't stop some people teaching.:D And all you get is a watered-down version of the therapy.[&:]

Personally I think proof of working with your therapy over a certain amount of time is best. Experience in your chosen subject goes a long way and what you have learned you can pass onto others. This isn't something that comes overnight.:D

I have know people to teach massage who have no clients, and therefore no real experience. I wouldn't want to learn from them when I can learn from somebody who has amassed good knowledge.

I know Reiki is different, but you only have to look at the jewellery thread and the whizzing of energy round the ring to see that some people aren't qualified.[&:]

hi candie i agree with you some teachers (eg teaching deep tissue/sports) havent even been in practice as sports massage therapists[:@]

I know for a fact itec used an aromatherapist to teach sports massage. The students were so disappointed half chucked in the course.

Be nice if as a student you got to interveiw the teacher and look at their clinical history before you parted with your cash.

Stephen, this is not good.

Sorry folks for the diversion!

I was under the impression that to teach for ITEC you had to do four years in your chosen subject.[&:]

Bad, bad, bad....

Ok had my rant! Back to the topic.

Yes, I think you’re absolutely right here, and very well put! The only thing I’d disagree on is “some humility” – I think you have to have a lot!!!

I do have a teaching qualification, I did the 7307 about 8 years ago, out of interest really, and not subject-specific. At that time I was a Reiki 2 much given to saying: “That’s it, I have all I need, I’m not interested in teaching Reiki, shan’t bother doing Masters”. And quite happily treating friends. Ha ha, how things change! 😀 I think, if I’m honest, that at some level I knew I had an inherent teaching ability, but probably lacked the confidence to “go for it”, (seem to have heard that around here before!). I was leading drumming workshops at the time, and somehow managing to convert the attendees’ learning into “City and Guilds speak” to get my assignments passed!

(In reply to your earlier one - you posted while I was typing!)

I do agree with much of what you say, and have certainly been on the receiving end of some massages that were better than others. However, re the jewellery thread and the energy whizzing round the ring, I do feel that the person who said this might have been quite knowledgeable and well “qualified” but had just happened to retain something she’d heard and maybe not thought to question. We just don’t know. I’m sure we all do it when we’re learning.

Hi, and welcome to HP! I can’t comment on your first two paras., since I’m not a masseuse – just a receiver of - but with regard to the third one:

Be nice if as a student you got to interveiw the teacher and look at their clinical history before you parted with your cash.

anyone thinking of doing Reiki with me is encouraged to interview me as much as they wish before making a decision as to whether or not they want me to heal or teach them to, either over the telephone or a visit in person. I wouldn’t have it any other way, although I can agree with you concerning some college tutors I’ve encountered in subjects other than healing.
