Hi everyone, I have a question that was posed to me on my Reiki course last weekend and I was wondering what other people's thoughts were. The question was raised by a student. Their point was why did I not tell students about the things they 'have to avoid' after taking a Reiki course? The things the student meant were: alcohol, drugs, junk food... etc. Now, I know from experience that as students use Reiki to self-heal on a regular basis, they develop a higher level of awareness and naturally adopt a healthier lifestyle. I think it is far better for students to find their own way and follow their own path at their own pace. Change can only be lasting if it is made from awareness and at the right time for each individual. My telling people what to do can actually put people off Reiki and even push them into avoiding self-healing.
Any thoughts?

Hi Omega1,

I found your post interesting. I don't ever tell anyone to avoid doing anything eg, smoking, alcohol etc etc as I don't believe that I have the right to tell anyone how to live their life - Reiki or no Reiki. However, during training I explain that Reiki can help to change habits such as this if the student wishes. The rest is completely up to the individual concerned. I think you are right in saying that they have to find their own way with their development but a little nudge in the right direction is helpful - in my opinion! I am aware from reading other posts that you will probably get various viewpoints on the subject!

Cheers.

I agree with Happy student and omega1.

But I always tell my students that are wishing to become Practitioners
that they need to be aware that Reiki is channelled energy, so the purer the channel is, then the more effective the Reiki healing will be. In the majority of case this seems to have worked.

I also agree with the above. I tell my student's that once they start working with Reiki their lives will change. I share with them the changes it made to me (drank coffee right up until the first attunements and then could no longer stand the smell of it and not touched it since!). I also seem to be less tolerant of alcohol but as I have never smoked couldn't say there was any change there! I think it's wrong to TELL students what they can and can't do, where has this come from? I have found that students gradually find their own way of what feels right for them. I'm sure Reiki would not have chosen to work with that person if there were going to be any problems with their life-style?

Love and light

Hi Reikiangel, your comment about coffee has made me realise that I have reacted the same way to alcohol since I was attuned to Gaia-Now several years ago now. Energy attunements of any kind will start to bring about change, no matter how small- it is all about acceptance.:)

As a soon-to-be Reiki student (my first attunements are in 2 1/2 weeks - yay!), I have to agree with the above. If a teacher was telling me 'don't do this, don't do that' I would find it off-putting. Lasting change can only come from the person who wishes to change. I know that for me, I am not good at making sudden changes to my diet and lifestyle, I need time to ease myself into new routines in my own time.

Yes I agree with all the above. However, when I send my Reiki 1 students away for lunch (the attunement will follow lunch - this is so that they can duck out if they feel it's not for them and not feel embarrassed) I tell them not to drink alcohol. This is what my Reiki master told me and I agree with him.

Reiki will change lives, and who are we to determine in advance how it should be changed?

Yes I do believe so, students shouldn't be told to do or not to do, but informed about how what works. It is important to explain, how abusing alcohol or drugs might affect energy work, and the other way around how differently the body might react on alcohol or other things after attunement, as they are being cleansed by energy when they start to work with it. We shouldn't tell them not to, but inform and possibly advice, that's my opinion 🙂
The kindest regards

I always tell mine that as Reiki can spead up the process of any substance e.g. medication, alcohol, etc they might want to be aware of this as one glass of wine may have a greater effect on them that before. They love it as they think going out will be less expensive!
