Hi people I will be having my first reiki attunement Tuesday coming up (session 1 of a 5 day course spread out over 5 wks, 2hrs per session) a course run by a council/borough adult learning course provider. Was just wondering if there was anything that I should be doing from now until then in preparation that will aid the sessions in particular the first one.
Any ideas gratefully appreciated. Also is it safe to be driving following on from an attunement? Do I need to take days off work, stay away from people or will I be able to just carry on as normal after it’s done  🙂
Thanks
H

wonderful opportunity

Drink extra water in preparation, and take some quiet time, to do some meditation, watch your breath
. Also is it safe to be driving following on from an attunement?
Yes, although of course it will be important that you feel grounded before you turn the key
Do I need to take days off work, stay away from people or will I be able to just carry on as normal after it’s done
If you have the luxury of being able to take a day off work, then that would be great, however you do not need to take time off, or to avoid people, you can carry on as normal.
You might notice you feel a bit tired the next day as the new energy integrates, or you may feel super energised.
Reiki is easily integrated into your lifestyle.
You may notice inner promptings to change things, such a what you eat, the entertainements you pursue...but the main thing is to enjoy the opportunity you have arranged for yourself and to simply say a big YES to the gift that is reiki

Hi hambo. WOW how lucky of you to have found a council/borough adult learning course provider to offer this! Wish mine did. I am in the London area too (which is of course a rather large town...). TBH I haven't any guidance to give to you as I have only been thinking about being attuned (I do a lot of thinking about things...) But, from what I have read on lovely HP and elsewhere,

Thanks Tigress that's really useful info. Although how do you actually "ground yourself down", is there a method or is more about just waiting until you feel settled.
Crystalcat my session is in Tower Hamlets (£32 for 5 wks I pay), you can find details of it on , even has a pdf course guide you can download. Still spaces on the course although the next one is scheduled in Jan 2010.
I am surprised that they have not let you know what to do pre-attunement. Do you receive your Reiki manual on the day?
Before attunement would advise to eat healthily, avoid alcohol and caffeine and like Tigress said to drink lots of water. Get the toxins out of your body so your energy channels are clear for the reiki to flow. Wear loose clothing on the day as you need to be comfortable.
As for what happens after the attunement you will go through a 21 day self healing so its important to do the above as per the pre-attunement. You may get flu like symtomps or experience emotional highs but this is individual to each person. Most likely you will feel really positive!
Good luck and it sounds like a fantastic opportunity from your local council.
Hi,
I've been a teacher for many years now. My only rules are:
1. If you're using any recreational drugs - stop. Now. Forever.
2. Don't turn up hungover.
I let the Reiki do the work. Whatever will be will be. I don't want students to turn up pretending to be something they're not. I want them as they are....warts and all.
Have fun,
Christina
Have a lovely time, I would drinks lots of water and be kind to yourself leading up to it, but do not worry too much, enjoy it and go with the flow.
Hi hambo,
There's no requirement to make preparations of any sort before a Reiki course/attunement. The recommendation to wear loose/comfortable clothing is good as you will likely be required to sit for a while and/or lay on a couch practicing Reiki on each other.
Avoiding alcohol is always a good idea before anything as you wouldn't want to go along feeling hungover or groggy.
When you have a Reiki attunement it is common for the body to start clearing itself of, what's generally referred to as, "toxins". Drinking sufficient water beforehand and during your Reiki course will aid your body in physically expelling those toxins.
The 21 day self healing is a myth created by Western Reiki traditions and comes from the knowledge that Usui sensei (who rediscovered Reiki) spent 21 days fasting and meditating on Mt. Karuma. Often, western Reiki courses teach that you should carry out self-healing (treating yourself with Reiki) for 21 days after the attunement. This is nonesense. Any good Reiki practitioner will carry out self-healing every day as part of their daily routine for good health, not just for 21 days, as well as the tradition of reciting the Reiki precepts daily with a view to living by them. These may be taught to you simply in English or you may also be given them in Japanese to learn (I personally prefer the sound of the Japanese).
As for driving after the attunement, as tigress says, yes, that's fine, just make sure you're grounded and "with it" before you drive. If necessary, just sit in the car for a few minutes first and connect yourself with each of your senses.
And likewise, there's no need to take time off work after. The attunement may start to bring out toxins making you feel a little "off", or you may notice some changes in your emotions (getting angry or happier it can swing either way). This is just a part of the initial clearing that Reiki is doing, and self-healing will help this. For some people they may feel nothing after the attunement and think it hasn't worked, for others, it can be quite immediate. Neither is wrong or right. Some changes that Reiki brings can happen over a period of time, whether that is weeks, months or even years.
Most of all, just go along and enjoy the experience. 😉
All Love and Reiki Hugs
Thanks for all the input and I really appreciate the advice given and I will put it all into practice, especially the meditation and drinking loads of water which I do anyway. I will also try to relax more, will be doing yoga classes, taking walks and a little gym work so hopefully all will be good.
Heaven-Spirit I was not given any pre course manuals but I wasn't expecting to get one. As far as I know this is a reiki 1 course over 5 wks so it could be that I will not be attuned in week 1, who knows. But I will browse through all the posts and see if there are any other things that can help.
Luv and light

There seems to be some confusion between the 21-day self-healing and the 21-day detox.
I agree with Reiki practitioners NOT limiting their self-healing to just the 21 days after attunement, but that this should be an ongoing, perhaps daily, habit.
The 21-day detox is sometimes denounced as a myth, but in the experience of many it's a reality, ie that some will go through it and some will not.
I've previously posted from my own guidelines to students, and here's a link to one such post:
