RE: how to explain reiki
Hi Periwinkle,
there are tonnes of sites where you can get a quick explanation, here is a short one from a site I like a lot.
Reiki is a simple and powerful system of laying on of hands and remote healing that can transform lives. Reiki Works on the body, mind, emotional and spiritual levels it releases blocked energy, promotes relaxation and reduces stress. Reiki has an innate intelligence and goes wherever needed in the body, helping to cleanse the body of toxins. Reiki also works on plants, animals, and even some machines. Over time it can enhance intuition, meditation and personal spiritual evolution .
Reiki is a system of energy healing From Japan using methods channeled by Dr. Mikao Usui, at the end of a 21 day fast and meditation on Mount Kuruama in Japan. the Actual history of Reiki has been somewhat shrouded in legend and myth only recently has research into Usui Sensei's real life begun. What is certain is that The Usui System of Natural Healing Was introduced to the West by Mrs. Hawayo Takata , from Hawaii, who received Reiki Attunements From Dr. Hayashi, Who had a Reiki clinic in Tokyo. She was visiting relatives in Japan and had successful treatments for a chronic illness at Dr. Hayashi's Clinic.

RE: how to explain reiki
Hi Periwinkle
I want to answer your question about explaining Reiki in 2 parts:
1. What is Reiki?
I explain that Reiki is Japanese in origin, and the word is made up of Rei which means Universal, and Ki which means energy, and is the same as Chi (Chinese) as in Tai Chi, and Prana as in Yoga. (At this point I can see they are beginning to get a handle on it.) More on the Reiki page of my website if you want to have a look. Link below.
2. The course to which you refer, by which I assume you mean an attunement.
I ask them to imagine that we are all newly built houses, and the electrician has put all the wiring and the electrical sockets in place. Then someone comes along and pushes a plug in and switches on the light - the connection to the energy.
This might sound too simplistic for words, but IMHO and experience, if you explain something to someone in terms of THEIR life experience, they are far more likely to understand it. I find that analogies like this are wonderful for getting a message across - in images, comparisons, that are easily understood.
These explanations do double duty: For those who are just curious and want to know more; and Reiki students who come to be attuned without knowing too much about it, only that they want to do it, and have a gut feeling about it. Oooh, kid gloves time!

What a beautiful definition - one to print off and pin to the wall.

To Rockys:
Please don't take this personally, but I visited the site from which you quoted, and found it very confusing, not to say incorrect in places. She's got hands-on treatments and attunements all muddled up in the same paragraph, and I think that if I knew nothing about Reiki, I'd have finished up totally bewildered!

RE: how to explain reiki
Good replies everyone, but Rei translates as Spirit(in today's Japanese, as in 'ghost') and Ki is the Universal Energy as in Chi
So Reiki is Spirit Energy (Ghost Energy) - or Spiritual Healing by another name.
Reiki is just another method or technique of giving healing. All healers embark on a journey of spiritual self development and in so doing, heal themselves and, if choosing to apply their techniques to others, help them to start their own spiritual journeys and heal them too.
The advantages that Reiki has over Spiritual Healing are
a) it has an Oriental name - like Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, etc.
b) it does not imply a religious connection as Spiritual healing does.
c) it is easier to 'teach' to practitioner level.
RE: how to explain reiki
I just say I'm like a water pipe, I just deliver Healing Energy from the Universe like a water pipe delivers water to your home.

Hi Holistic,
no offence taken I agree it is a bit confusing in places on that site, but I have a muddled brain too so I managed to sort it in my grey cells or grey hair ;).

RE: how to explain reiki
Hi
There's an excellent article on the FHT site about this, it basically says that Reiki is 'healing with love' which I find quite lovely.
I describe it as channeling healing energy through set points in the body via my hands. The energy goes to the place where it is needed most, ie some symptoms are not necessarily the cause. I also say that it can take you into a relaxed, meditative state which if nothing else is a great way to spend an hour (that's generally for the hard-core non-believers!!) I was also told that one hour of Reiki can be the equivalent to 3 hour's sleep so that's always a good one to quote. There are alot of people in my life that don't believe, and generally think I've lost the plot so the more reading on the subject, the better. That way you can try and tailor your answers more towards the person you are dealing with. It's a struggle, but I believe that I'm starting to turn people around to at least not think I'm bonkers!
I can't get onto the FHT site to post the link at the mo but it's in the non-member area under articles.

Oh, good, I sometimes suffer from "Open mouth before engaging brain" syndrome
Grey hair? It's gotta be premature!
