I do Swedish massage and recently I had Reiki 2 attunement (I had Reiki 1 attunement more than a year ago). My question is, can I combine the two, i.e. can I perform Reiki healing/channeling WHILE doing Swedish massage? I.e. rather than just keep leaving my hands in the Reiki positions, can I perform the massage instead? Does that work?

Hello

Once you're attuned I think it's hard to stop Reiki kicking in when doing massage or any hands on therapy.

Had lots of treatments over the years and noticed a real difference in the quality of touch when a therapist is Reiki attuned. As a working massage therapist I noticed my hands got warmer during sessions and I was more aware of hot/cold areas of the clients body and more sensitive to problem areas.

Think lots of therapists successfully combine Reiki with other therapies. Unless I was asked for Reiki I didn't use Reiki hand positions or symbols. Key thing is the client understands what you're doing and knows what to expect during a session. There are all sorts of issues about deliberately doing Reiki without client consent. and there was an interesting thread on here recently started by a disappointed client who expected traditional massage and got lots of holding/healing moves.

Hope that helps

I completely agree. I am a former CMT who ran a Medical Massage practice out of a Chiropractic clinic. I always enjoyed the flow of reiki through me during the sessions, but did not mention anything about it as "reiki" unless the client expressed an interest in reiki coming in to the session. Many clients exclaimed that my hands were exceptionally hot compared to the hands of other therapists they had experienced.

Don't hands get hot in any healing modality that is "hands on"?

Yes that is quite normal Crowan when healing hands on or off, in person or remote, though sometimes the healer requires more healing than the person that they are attempting to heal does and the hands can be cold as the flow is reversed. 😉

It's surprising how many massage therapists have freezing cold hands.

I'm just learning Swedish massage at the moment and when massaging my Tutor and models, Reiki did automatically start to channel through me as I massaged and I was conscious of the previous thread about Reiki and massage combinations. I didn't do any of the Reiki positions or holds while massaging but it was definitely flowing and my Tutor who is also Reiki attuned mentioned she could feel it too. Completely unintentional but I was so engrossed in learning the massage moves that I allowed it to continue. But I struggle with its appropriateness when the client hasn't asked for it. When I've seen therapists who are Reiki attuned they have always asked or let me know that I may receive Reiki during my treatment (reflexology) and was that OK, so I may do similar.

Hi Meadowsweat

When you are massaging you are trying to heal someone through physical touch, when you are applying Reiki techniques you are trying to heal someone with healing touch or non touch healing, whenever you try and heal someone, your natural healing flow will be activated and you will start healing, you cannot separate yourself from your healing, you can only choose to heal or not to heal. 😉

I have just had a new referral at the hospice who I intend to do combination of IHM and reiki on. I am expecting reiki to be channelled during the massage even if I don't consciously start it...

I think combining is exceptional and can greatly enhance a treatment.
However, some people do not believe in Reiki, or they feel that it contradicts their religious or cultural beliefs, we may feel it coming through but it doesn't always mean we should.
Take for instance someone who is devoutly Catholic, they feel that any hands on healing is wrong.. morally, ethically, but they are very sick, they need healing, they need nurturing.. touch.. support.. their body craves that support, however, their belief system says no. As healers, therapists, we know that this can be deeply supportive on the physical, emotional and spiritual level, but we have to respect that individual and their views.. so we have to hold back.
I tend to discuss things like this with my clients because you never know.. all we can do is our best.

Yes, you can. If you still have doubts regarding it. You can just simply follow the link and ask the expert yourself.

i have a sentence at the bottom of my consultation form that i get them to sign it simply just says that i am a Reiki practitioner and you may recieve Reiki during your treatment.

this then allows them to ask any questions about Reiki or the treatment they are about to get.

most of my massage clients comment on my hands being warm or that they had strange feelings etc during massage i then explain that it is because i an Reiki practitioner.

hope this helps xx

Please remember that you cannot "switch off" Reiki at will - I would consider such a notion as a contradiction, as the reason for performing any treatment is to facilitate healing, the therapist does not heal! The client allows the process to help them.
Regarding Reiki, a number of years ago there were some 1300 different types of "so called" Reiki being taught around the World. I, personally subscribe to the Original Usui form of Reiki as passed down to us via Dr Hayashi, Madam Takata and the 22 masters she attuned before she died. (It's not the Cowboys we need to worry about, it's the Indians (no offence intended)).
Make no claims regarding Your Healing. Ask that whatever healing that may result will only happen for the receivers good and that it will continue for as often and as long as it is needed - if it is not appropriate for the client, it will pass to another who may need it. - it is never wasted.
I am a chiropodist/podiatrist, reflexologist and Reiki (Master) practitioner here in Ireland. - anthonylarkin.com

"No offence intended" does not mean "no offence given".

Reiki truly is a journey of enlightenment for YOU. The healing is part of the results of your journey - a wonderful addition enabling us to do more compassionate things in our lives. If everything we do comes from pure thought and a loving attitude, then the reiki will flow regardless of you giving massage, or reflexology, or whichever other therapies you use. If a client has asked for a massage, then that is what they get from you, the reiki comes through on its own. Personally I would rather stick to what they ask for when giving them a treatment. There is a connection of trust between the therapist and the client which should not be broken by either. Anything else should be talked about and agreed.
