Hi all,
A friend of a friend has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder also known as manic depression.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of treating the condition with Reflexology. and if so, could you share any information or advice about the best course of treatment.
I've only been practicing since January, so not really had much experience with this condition, only really mild forms of stress and anxiety.
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance,
pinga
RE: Reflexology and Bipolar/manic depression
I have treated people with bi-polar disorders successfully but you need to be aware of potential problems.
This could be very tricky for you as you may become an emotional prop for your friend and find yourself out of your depth, without a counselling type training. Treatment by you would be contraindicated at times of exxtreme swings, for your own protection. (emotionally). But be guided by your instincts.
Many of our stressed clients use us as a confidant and sometimes it can weigh a bit heavily on our shoulders so you must protect yourself from that. There are some very good grounding techniques for the reflexologist to use. Look back through the forums for those.
But if you do treat her it would defintely benefit her.
Go lightly to start with to assess her reaction. She may get heightened sensation.
Try to give her a normal full balancing treatment, plus extra, brain, forebrain, solar plexus and adrenal work. Lots of relaxology as well, ie sweeping and kneading. Also perhaps try to make her close her eyes and really feel the treatment rather than talk and suggest she also sees a qualified counsellor to help with the bi-polar depression.

RE: Reflexology and Bipolar/manic depression
Hi Jan,
I've had trouble grounding myself properly in the past - only with Reflex, not with any of my other therapies, and i'm not sure why. I've only ever felt sick or had a bad headache, but i know it's because of the emotions and energy.
I'll try some different techniques before getting involved i think. I really want to help, but not by risking myself. I was going to do an aromatherapy massage, but i might just use a blend for an inhalation first, and see how it goes.
Thanks for the advice - i probably would have gone in head first, without realising the potential risks to myself.
