Who and why would you choose a particular professional association? What are you offered and do you think it's good value for money?

How do you define a professional association? Something like the FHT ?

I chose to join the PA related to my main therapy. I get my insurance through a different organisation. 'One' could join a whole raft of PA's and be faced with massive subscription fees - I know of some therapists who pay hundreds for membership of different organisations. Other than quarterly magazines, and a listing on directories, I'm not sure what else they get.

I joined MLDUK in 1997, as MLD is my main therapy. Yes, I get value for money - excellent quarterly Journal, and local area meetings, plus conferences. I also get frequent referrals through their website directory. I was previously with another organisation I joined in 1978 (been in this game a long time!), which I left in 1999, with no 'thanks for 21 years loyalty and farewell' recognition. I have trained in two other techniques over the years, joined their associations, but left after a while due to lack of support, and high membership fees.

I am considering joining the FHT if only because it shows I am series about cps for all my therapies....not just reiki. I will keep my membership of the UK reiki federation tho. That gives me good insurance.

High membership fees? I have to pay nearly 300.00 a year to stay on the register of the GPhC and if I am not registered I cannot work! In addition I pay another 200.00 or so the Royal Pharmaceutical society which is the professional body for pharmacists.

A professional association should provide support and facilitate cpd and networking
