I have been a reflexologist for 20 yearsregularly treating IVF and natural conception through to labour management, water births and Caesarian Section. Suzanne's course is great fun and she is a fabulous and inspiring teacher, but there is something you should know about reflexology thatI learnt from Dwight Byers. There is no such thing as "Maternity Reflexology" as each session treats the person and not the condition! This means that you take your clues from the mother's history and what you find on her feet. A "maternity reflexology" course teaches you about the hormonal changes that take place and problems that might arise during pregnancy and confinement. You can learn this from attending an ante natal course at a hospital near you - I am sure they would let you attend, usually free. The only contra-indication is undiagnosed bleeding. Thanks for your advice on the matter - that is really interesting. I never thought about ante natal classes. Do you actually have to be specially qualified to do pregancy & labour reflexology or is it something that you can study yourself??

Sass, if you are a qualified Reflexologist then you probably already know what to do and dont need to pay out more for specialist courses.
I'm afraid I'm getting a bit cynical about some of these courses and they do make the teachers a very nice income.
If you didn't cover the subject on your course it may well be worth taking some extra training tho.

You can ususally share knowledge with other reflexologists and just buy the books for further training. You can learn a lot on here where there have been many interesting sharing of knowledge, especially about fertility and pregnancy treatments.

No, you don't have to be speciallyqualified, there isn't a special qualification. If you have been properly trained as a reflexologistyou can become an expert in any area of your choice, just by doing lots of treatments and taking the trouble to read up and learn about yourinterest. "Mother & Baby" or "Nursing Times" magazines could be a gentle start. I've attended Moshe Kruchik's course: Reflexology in Pregnancy and Childbirth. It is E X C E L L E N T. After this experience with Moshe, I decided that Maternity Reflexology is definitely what I want to do. His course has given me the confidence I was needing at that moment.

Moshe is an unusual guy. He is a Reflexologist with lots of experience. He is also a Doula, and brings his knowledge directly from the Delivery Room. I loved the course, I was enchanted by his personal charm, his charisma and his great sense of humour. All the other girls who attended were also very happy .... I recommended the course to a good friend of mine, Lucy, who attended the course at the Oxford School of Reflexology. She was delighted.

From my point of view, the course was not expensive at all.It was only one weekend, approx. 20 academic hours Sat.and Sun. We worked a lot, by the end of the course I had the feeling that I got back every penny I invested.
Oneof thegirls said that she attended another course (2 weekends with a very famous lady)enjoyed the first weekend but felt very disappointed after the second.........

I am a qualified Reflexologist since 1997. I thaught I new something about Maternity Reflexology.
Wrong.

It was only afterattending Moshe's course last yearwhen I understood that I knew nothing about Maternity Reflexology.He is an expert, no doubt. He brings the delivery room to the class!We had the opportunity to discuss lots of cases, think about them, suggest alternatives and learn the best from each other. There is no book thatcan do that for you.
I'veread Complimentary therapies by Denise Tiran, a good book with precise information, however as Moshe told us, it is not only about Reflexology.......it is a new mother who needs anddeserves all your empathy.

If you haven't gone into pregnancy etc in detail on your general reflexology training and haven't had a child yourself then a specialised course can be very helpful and do your confidence wonders too. I also like the idea of attending an antenatal course and may phone my surgery to ask if I can go along to pick up new knowledge. You also learn loads of things from your clients. It is also very worthwhile going onto the AoR website if you are a member and looking at their advice on treating pregnant ladies, contraindications etc. I recently had a situation where a lady had a complication in pregnancy, and I got just the advice I needed from there.

Just to say thank you for your advice.

I heard about Moshe many times in the past, but never had the opportunity to meet him in person. Wow! He's a gorgeous guy!

I followed his course last November. It was an excellent course. I learnt loads more than I anticipated before coming to the course. I learnt loads more than in every other 'Maternity Reflexology course I attended in the past.

His way of explaining is so clear that it is impossible not to understand. He is a guy with a great sense of humor, which makes every minute so enjoyable....

Hi I have just attended a maternity reflexology workshop with Val Groome. Her details are on the aor website. It was an excellent course and whilst we talked about pregnancy on our reflexology course, the information that she gave us over the weekend was excellent. It made me feel so much more confident about treating pregnant ladies and has made me realise what I shouldn't be doing. She gave us loads of examples from her experience. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting to know more about treating pregnat women - as well as those who would like to be. It was also good value for money over a weekend. I came away buzzing with energy and information. I just need the pregnant ladies!!!

I've just been researching maternity reflexology courses and have found little info on Val Groome. I googled her and found some brief info on a Val Groome in Leigh on Sea, Essex, but no reference to courses and workshops. (Tried AOR website, but maybe as I'm not a member, can't find the info..) I just wondered if you could provide any more info on her courses, costs, any website she may have, etc. Also, how have things gone since you did the workshop?! Are you treating loads of pregnant ladies?!

I had seen something on this on another thread but was hoping to find something closer to home as I'm in deepest, darkest Devon. However, due to timing, cost, lack of venues in the South West, etc, I will look into the logistics of attending and let you know asap!

Sept 1st and 2nd at Bannatynes health club, Belmont, Durham.
Enrol 9am on the 1st, work till 5.30. Next day start at 9.30am.

The cost is £160 but she has put up the price for any further courses.

theres a B&B nearby £40 per night.

On the subject of additional courses are there courses specifically regarding infertility or are these covered in maternity courses. Also what about the menopause because these areas are of more interest to me and i'd like to specialise in one or both of them. Sxxx
