Hiya there,

I would be interested to know what peoples thoughts are on the "Healing Crisis". How do you approach this topic with your clients and how do you explain what a healing crisis is? Has anyone come across interesting research in this area? Any other views/thoughts or opinions would be welcomed on this subject also!

Thanks folks!

RE: Healing Crisis

Hello bumble

Well, the word crisis evokes doom and disaster in many people's minds, so I don't use it :D. After a treatment with a new client I say that they may find they're in the loo more often, or could feel a little emotional, or perhaps get a bit of a muzzy head. I remind them about the value of drinking a bit more water than usual, and explain about toxins being released by treatments and how they need to find a way out of the body. I invite them to phone me if they have any concerns following treatments, and at the next treatment I always check how they got on after the last one. If anyone has had a strong reaction I go a bit more gently for their next session and things generally work out just fine.

I am really not keen on this expression to be honest and I think it is often spread by colleges and too much is made of it. People react in different ways and some of them feel awful, I had one lady say such today. I just say they will get through it and it will pass. I don't use the term.

RE: Healing Crisis

Hi all,

I am studting ATM, and we are being encouraged to give out a post treatment leaflet. I'm thinking of doing a 'you may feel the effects of reflexology by.....' and listing the usual bowel movements, mucus flow etc. Then also do a 'I advise you to....' rest up, drink water etc.

That way we can alleviate and worry about Healing Crises without bring up the phrase.

I would be interested if anyone else gives out these leaflet and what they put on them.

RE: Healing Crisis

Hi Russell

I give out After care Notices to all my clients who come to the clinic for the different Therapies that l do...

Aromatherapy
Reflexology
Sports Massage
Swedish Body Massage
Thermo Auricular Therapy.

I don't mention the words healing crisis,

For example For Aromatherapy l've written...

To gain maximum benefit from the oils on the skin and through inhalation of the vapours, avoid washing or bathing for approximately 4-8 hours after treatment if you can.

Avoid direct exposure to sunlight as some oils can make the skin photosensitive. Your Therapist will advise you if this is the case.

As Aromatherapy is a detoxifying treatment, avoid alcohol, smoking and excessive tea or coffee drinking for 24 hours after treatment. Some oils will enhance the effect of alcohol so care must be taken if driving or working - your Therapist will advise you if this is the case.

Drink plenty of water to help eliminate the toxins from your body.

Eating light meals for the rest of the day will allow the body to concentrate on natural healing.

You may feel relaxed and tired after a massage. Take care if driving or working. Allow your body to rest to enable the full therapeutic benefit of the oils to take effect.

Do not use any other skin preparations until 8 hours after treatment.

If you feel any skin irritation after treatment, wash the effected area immediately.

Sometimes the detoxifying process can cause some slight nausea, if this is the case, drink plenty of water.

I hope this is some help.
