Hi everyone

I am just about to start on my case studies for my ITEC reflexology course. We have been advised to charge from the begining. I am interested to know what others do and how much do you charge or if you do charge at all.

RE: Case Studies - do you charge?

Hi Debbie,

I am very suprised to hear your tutor has advised you charge, I'm studying at the moment and we were expressly told not to. As you are not qualified, you are not insured therefore to charge would be unethical.

You can ask for petrol money or other expenses etc but that's the limit of it.

Hopefully once you have qualified, your case studies will not be able to do without out and will be very happy to pay then!

Best of luck,

Russell

I am also surprised to hear that you are being encouraged to charge for case studies. At the end of the day, YOU need those case studies in order to both pass your exam and to get the vital practice necessary for you to become a competant therapist.

Even with the necessary student insurance, I would be surprised if you would be covered for charging.

Even asking for costs towards petrol and oils etc is to my mind very cheeky for case studies - it is part of the course, so a cost you should really be covering yourself.

i agree with karen & russell

i have never charged for any of my case studies although to start with i visited my case studies in their homes - i got sick of this and told them if they wanted to continue being a case study they would have to come to my college or my house! and then of course as a result of this i had no costs to cover....

Hiya, if I remember my student insurance correctly, you are not allowed to charge by the insurers. If you havent got student insurance then you shouldnt be going there... I would worry big time about any tutor that tells you too charge...

When we start learning our methods we are by no means competent....our case studies help us learn our trade by us "getting it wrong, missing bits, talking too much, looking at notes too much not having the experience to back up our findings" etc etc, they are the ones doing us a favour, their payment for this assault on them is an interesting treatment to start with followed by some middle of the road ones by hopefully finishing with a very competent one...

No payment from case studies....Even now when i undertake new courses I do not charge even though it may be an extension of something I may already be doing, what tends to happen as I use my most regular clients is that I end up with bottles of wine etc at the end but this has come from them.....also I think you will find it difficult to find case studies willing to commit to a course of regular treatments if they have to pay!!

Agree with all that has been said, although we were told we could ask for a contribution towards our costs, but none of us did.

However, we did have people come into college to pracitce on and we charged them £5 per treatment. This money went to the college, even though we had to use our own oils, towels, etc, for the treatments.

I've heard of people being told they could charge for case studies.. usually just costs.. are you insured with student insurance? If you charge would you need to tell the IR? I've never charged for case studies cause they are pretty much experimental and part of my development. Always been confused about the legal side of things when you charge.

Hi Debbie I also wouldn't charge for case histories but when doing mine I did have a donation box where people could leave something if they wanted to.

Any money you take, whether it's a treatment fee or petrol money, should be declared to the Inland Revenue as this is additional earnings. You should also be paying self-employed NI if you're not already on PAYE.

Hi everyone

Thank you for your replies. I must admit I was quite surprised to have been told to charge from the beginning of my training,(hence my letter) although my tutor mean't it more in terms of costs.

I now feel very niave, as I don't know where I am with insurance.

I haven't actually started on my case studies proper yet.....so far i've only practiced on my husband and my son, they pay for it in many other ways!!

Hi
I have been on the case this morning and I am now going to send off for my student insurance.

I am still not sure what to do about a charge if any but may ask for a voluntary donation which would be nice to give to a childrens home that I know of in Grenada.

Hey Ho back to the feet!!

Wow I was really surprised reading this.

I wouldn't dare charge my case studies for treatments and I visit all of them at their house and believe me they are all far away and would never dream of asking for petrol money either... they are helping ME out by being a case study as I'm learning from them...

Just my opinion anyway 🙂

Couldn't agree more. This is exactly how I feel about case studies. They are helping you, you are practicing on them - how can you then turn around and ask for money? All of the people who were my case studies were people who I approached - I asked them to be a case study.

It's all about energy exchange. You give them a treatment and yes, you're quite right to want something in return but you're getting that without asking for money. You're getting the chance to use their experiences and their notes to help you to pass your exam. You can then go on to make a living with what you've learned. Asking for money on top of that is just plain greedy in my opinion.

Hey guys,
I only asked if you do charge. I do not consider myself a greedy person!! I genuinely didn't know if you charged, as I know of beauty therapists that do special rates for prequalification treatments..................I'm innocent don't shoot!!
