RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

milk thistle, dandelion, essential fatty acids, lecithin, bitters-are all good for the liver. my friend recommends a liver detox of taking on a salad equal parts olive oil, fresh lemon juice and 2 fresh cloves garlic crushed. i have not tried this, as she says you can expect to feel pretty badly for a day or so. i do take milk thistle, this regenerates the liver and is so healthy, and drink dandelion tea. avoid saturated fats and all refined foods-junky carbohydrates are very hard on the liver. drink lots of lemon water. and sadly, diet coke and ice are both hard on the digestion, the chemicals will still strain your liver too, though maybe not as bad as alcohol. give the liver a holiday by avoiding all chemicals, it will thank you.

I posted on the Colon Cleansing thread in General Health about a website that offers herbal products and telephone support for various cleanses, one of them being a Mild Liver Cleanse:

Hope it helps

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Hi Tx 🙂

Wot yer needs is sum S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), loike. [8D]

SAMe has been around a long time and has proved its worth in treating liver problems, and it's naturally produced by the body. We just make less and less of it as we get older.

As an aside, it's also been shown in clinical trials to be more effective against depression than the SSRI's such as Prozac, Seroxat, Venlafaxine and the like.

SAMe is also a very good treatment for arthritis and a whole host of other problems.

It's quite expensive if you buy it from a health shop, costing something like fifty quid for around 3 weeks supply and there's some dodgy SAMe out there...... if it's not supplied as enteric-coated tablets, it won't work, and some of the SAMe supplied is simply methionine mixed with co-factors.

If you would like to borrow a book an SAMe (postal strike permitting!), free of charge, email me and I'll post it to you asap. I also have high-quality enteric-coated SAMe available at around half the price you can get it in the shops.

Here's some info:

SAMe: The Liver Super- Nutrient

The evidence is definitely in. SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is serious medicine against liver disease. Almost a thousand published studies document the ability of this bioactive form of methionine to prevent and treat liver disorders, including cancer.

SAMe, the amazing "super-nutrient," can single-handedly normalize liver function. How? SAMe is the central player in liver biochemistry. It does two crucial things: It methylates, and it transforms itself into the liver's most vital substance, glutathione.

The liver contains the third highest amount of SAMe in the body, after the adrenal and pineal glands. SAMe is so important for liver function that it can be considered an essential nutrient for that organ. In addition to its many other functions, SAMe plays a leading role in liver regeneration. The liver has special SAMe enzymes just for regenerating tissue.

The liver has a tough job. It has to break down every chemical the body encounters, including drugs. It has to filter blood, chase after bacteria, make bile, and create various other substances such as lipoproteins. In short, there is a reason the liver is the only organ that readily regenerates: It has to.

SAMe is the product of a biochemical reaction between ATP and methionine. Half of all methionine in the body is used in the liver to make SAMe. SAMe has been compared to ATP in its importance for the body. It is used in many different cellular processes, from replication to biochemical reactions that create melatonin and phosphatidylcholine. SAMe is particularly important for the liver because glutathione is synthesized from it. Glutathione is crucial for liver function. A good portion of liver SAMe is turned into glutathione. Glutathione is the liver's natural antioxidant.

SAMe has been isolated from yeast and purified. It is currently sold in Europe as an antidepressant. Many clinical studies have been conducted with this supplemental form of SAMe. It has been used in trials against depression, osteoarthritis and other conditions. Of all the published studies, the ones on the liver are perhaps the most comprehensive.

The Liver Super-Nutrient
SAMe is the liver super-nutrient. Nothing comes close to providing the spectrum of health benefits that SAMe provides for the liver. Based on published clinical trials, elevating SAMe levels can have a powerful effect on many conditions. As a preventive agent, SAMe is so powerful that it can reverse the effects of chemicals and alcohol as they occur. Studies show that low SAMe levels create the conditions for liver cancer, and that SAMe can prevent these conditions from occurring. Anyone concerned about the effects of drugs, chemicals, alcohol and aging on their livers should look into the benefits of SAMe.

Be well,
Jamie

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Hi Trinityx,
An active ingredient called silymarin, found in the herb Milk Thistle, is an effective liver cleanser. The good news is that it's said to repair liver cells, even from the after-effects of drugs or alcohol. Milk Thistle is available from most health stores... they must have it in Wolves, I work in Telford and they have it there...

You can also download a copy of Andreas Moritz's "The Amazing Liver Cleanse" from my other web site, at [DLMURL] http://www.fireandearth.co.uk/health/ebooks.htm [/DLMURL]
It's supposed to be brilliant, but I haven't had the bottle to try it yet.....[:'(]

The enteric coated SAM-e that Jamie was talking about can be bought from [DLMURL] http://64.177.224.15/ [/DLMURL] . They take their time to process orders, but they get there in the end! 😀

Holland and Barratt also do Dandelion coffee - you don't actually have to roast the root yourself!

Oh and do cheap Milk Thistle and their service is quick with only £1 for postage. The catalogue is better than the website though x

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Hello again
I got a catalogue through the post this morning from Goodness Direct (I'd never heard of them before). Not only do they have loads of herbal supplements, including milk thistle, but they also do all the Yogi Teas (which are hard to find where I live) and lots of cold-pressed oils etc. Like Holland & Barratt in a book!

Hello Trinity

Green tea with dandelion is pretty good and the one I get also contains milk thistle. Sorry if I'm repeating what someone else has said but I believe laying off the fats is supposed to be a good move for the liver.

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Hiya Trinityx

Have just read your post. I have just been told that I have hep C , so have had to try and change my life totally. (I wish I had all my notes handy at work to inform you better) anyway I'll give you some of the info I can remember.
Have you had your liver tested? Do you know if it is damaged and if so how far gone is it!!
Caffine is extremely bad for the liver and Green Tea although good for us does contain a lot of caffine so it is best to avoid drinking too much of it. All citrus foods and drinks are also very bad for liver. A healthy balanced diet is needed and be sure to avoid alcohol.

Reflexology is extremely good for the liver as well , working the area of the liver, lymphatic, stomach and small & large intestine.

Hope this helps a little and good luck with the no alcohol - especially with Xmas round the corner. No how you feel as I'm in the same boat and will be totally t-total from here on in.

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Cheers for the response, Unicorn.
I havent had my liver tested, Im generally just looking at my alcohol intake and have decided that I should stop!!
I havent had a drink since Sunday night! yay!
I must sau=y tho that Im not sleeping well at all. It makes me wonder if I have any 'natural' sleep in me-I dont think Ive experienced natural sleep for a while. Last night wasnt as bad as Monday night, I managed to get about 4ish hours.
Saying that tho, when my alarm went off at 7 this morning, I was up like a shot! Very bright and breezey!!!!

I do feel better for it and I am doing the 'AA' thing of 'one day at a time'. Im not even thinking of Christmas!!!!
At least Ill remember it this year![sm=jump1.gif]
Thanks Tx

Oh BTW!
I dont drink coffee but I do drink green tea!
I have about 3 cups per day, d'ya think that this is too much???

And (oh dear) my other passion is satsumas![:o]
Ive had 5 today already!!!!

I cant have reflexology as I have VERY sensitive feet (they dont tickle, they hurt when anyone -including myself-touches them!)

RE: Please help my pickled liver!!

Hi Ya Trinityx

Well done on the no drinking since Sunday. Your body is obviously telling you
something and fair play to ya for listening.

Your sleep patterns should come back soon - have you tried Lavender oil, couple of drops on pillow or 7 - 10 drops into the bath (after its been run)

Clary Sage & Chamomile are also very good oils to try when detoxing.

3 cups of green tea is ok as with the satsumas - but don't eat too many more in the course of a day. Try Fresh Pinapple - it's good for the liver too.
As I said yesterday, stick to a healthy diet - low in fat sugar and salt and high in fibre.

I've been off the drink now since end of September, at first it was hard - in the sense that when ever I socalise there is always drink around, as with cigs - I suppose - BUT I'M feeling GREAT NOW - got far more energy.

Good luck with your studies at Uni.
BIG LOVE
