Hi all,
Has anyone tried any sort of diet based on eating low glycemic index foods? I have been reading about it and it sounds really healthy and sensible, but I'd also be interested to hear what you guys think. If you need an explanation (I did!) have a look at
Although my food intolerances are much better now, I am still having some problems, one of which is rapid (and I mean rapid) weight gain. So if you have experience of this diet and think it is either the answer or a waste of time please let me know!
Thank you,
Lucy
RE: glycemic index diet?
Hello Lucy
In my opinion this is perhaps one of the best diets around. It advocates pulling out (minimising) foods which contain refined carbohydrates... white flour/white pasta/potatoes without skins/sugar. Instead you focus on eating foods which have a low glycaemic index... wholemeal flour/wholemeal pasta/jacket potatoes/low GI fruits. What low GI means (perhaps you read this in the website?) is that blood sugar is raised slowly after eating these foods, and your metabolism putters along at a nice steady rate, rather than peaks and troughs when you eat high GI foods.
Many of the newer diets that you are hearing about... such as Hamptons, The Zone, and The X-factor focus you away from carbs and onto proteins, but if you look closely they also recommend low GI carbs such as fruit, nuts, wholemeal.
I think that this is the way forward personally, because you choose foods which are low GI for each of your meals, and the emphasis is not so much on calories, as good quality carbohydrates, and healthy alternatives.
I'd go for it if I was you. It is healthy, and balanced (by balanced I mean its attitude, you don't go OTT). Good luck!
Ava
ps. Exercise is crucial for losing weight. An half hour walk 6 or 7 days a week will help you keep your blood sugar in balance, make you feel more positive, help you sleep, and contribute to weightloss.
RE: glycemic index diet?
Thanks Ava,
Glad you think it is sensible too. I've bought the starter pack, read the book, watched the video and am raring to go. I start at the class on Monday (never been to diet classes in my life but thought it might help keep me on track this time). Have been "preparing" this week - getting used to salads etc!
