Hi all,
Long time no post - have been so busy, but always popping in to see what I am missing !
Anyway, wanted to post this as I think some people may find my experience recently interesting and even helpful.
As many of you know from previous posts I have spent years trying to overcome a compulsive eating affliction, and finally after 25 years ( big exhausted sigh !) I have found a simple way to stop the cravings.
It is so simple that I am somewhat miffed it took me so long to discover it, but at least it didn't take me until I was 70 !!
Having read many times about the fact that often the body's thirst signs are misinterpreted as hunger, I began to drink at least 4 pints of water a day , pure water, nothing added. Carried on with my normal diet. Within a couple of days I felt very different, and noticed that the craving were gone. And that is it, simple as that.
Anyone who is in a similair position , I would urge you very strongly to give this a go. It is magically effective. As well as the food craving vanishing I have more energy, less pmt by far, and my mood is far sunnier.
I found drinking the amount hard at first, and I now drink lukewarm, and with a straw ! This little trick seems to make it easy somehow.
The amount of water you should aim for is half your body weight in stones, in pints - eg. 9 stones, 4.5 pints etc.
The physiological explanation for this is that the brain uses both glucose and water for energy. When it runs short of water it sends out signals that can be misread as a need for glucose, so we think we want to eat. As I used to drink about 1-2 pints a day, I was pretty much dehydrated all the time, and it is no wonder I was tired, snappy, depressed, and cramming sugar into myself in desperation.
Another rather good side effect of all this is that because I have more energy I am finding it enjoyable to exercise and so I am benefitting that way too.
As a therapist myself seeing clients, it is frightening how many people do not drink very much, and I really believe that a high percentage of folks are all dried up !

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi,
I am definitely going to try this - I've always found it hard to drink enough and like you suffer from food cravings but I'm going to make a real effort! I'll let you know how I get on! thanks for the tip,
Camille x
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
I am with you on this Ru! How many times have I thought I was hungry, when in fact my body needed water and fast! I have to keep reminding myself to drink water, but my intake is far better than it used to be and I do feel better for it.
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
I was really interested to come across this thread as i've just started to drink more water in the last couple of weeks and i have to say it's changed the way i feel from feeling hungry and also its got rid of that horrible lathargic feeling that was draining me of energy each day[&o]
I still drink coffee and tea as normal but whenever i get myself a drink of coffee etc now i get myself a large glass of water as well and i make sure i drink it. its worth it just to feel better, plus i've not had any headaches since i've increased my water intake too, and i definitly don't feel so bloated and i've slept better at night[sm=sleep.gif]so good news all round[sm=1syellow1.gif]

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hiya all!!
I agree with the extra consumption of water but isnt this amount a bit exessive??
In my nutrition module there was a girl (not in the class-in a video!) who drank too much water and she nearly died-something to do with iso somethings!! Soz but the module ran from 6-9pm and I fell alseep most lectures!!
The gist was that it was like she was drowning her body-her bodily functions couldnt do their job with so much water in her system....
Im just over 10 stone-5 pints of water seems sooo much for me to drink in one day.
Any one else got any thoughts??

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi T,
I can understand your concerns as yes, there is such a thing as drinking too much, but my figures came from a highly respected source - a book called 'Your Body's many cries for water' written by a Dr. Batmangelidjh. An excellent read by the way. In it he explains the physiology of the body in terms of water consumption.
I weigh just over 8 stone, and I often drink 5 pints of water a day, with absolutely no ill effects, only the many benefits that I have already described. In fact if I now drink less than 4 pints I feel yukky, as my body enjoys the luxury of being properly hydrated and tells me off if I am not !
The fact that 5 pints seems a lot only proves that most people drink way way below their real needs. Of course, it shouldn't be drunk all at once !!! I tend to have a pint every couple of hours, with more in the morning when the body is detoxing.
Many minor aches and pains are due to dehydration, and one of the things I have noticed is that I no longer get all the 'niggles' that I used to.
Just to illustrate the effectiveness of this , here is a 'before and after' portrait of me ......
Before water : aching gallbladder/liver area ( gallstones )
mouth ulcers
horrendous PMT - mood swings, sore breasts, bloating
a cloud of depression about 50% of the time
sugar cravings, binge eating
tiredness and lethargy most days
After increasing water consumption to at least 4 pints a day -
ALL of these things have gone.
I am now happier, have lots of energy and motivation
PMT is now only very mild and for a couple of days instead of two weeks!
All aches and pains gone.
Clearer skin.
The difference is so astonishing I shall continue to do this for the rest of my life.

Hiya Ru!!

How did u manage to drink it??!!
I managed 3 pints (yes, spread thru the day!)
Ill see if Ive got any info from the lecture about that woman.

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi Trinityx,
I also thought that 5 pints is an incredible amount of liquid to consume throughout the day.........then i thought about my husband on an evening out with his mates at the pub! [sm=rollaugh.gif] so i'll have to get some tips from him! lol

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hiya T,
I think the secret is to work up to that amount, and I have my best friend to help me - a straw ! I also drink the water warm - a pint seems to vanish in no time - especially if you drink it about 20 mins before you eat, when you feel hungry. The beauty of that is also that you then don't eat too much - my intake of sugary things ( which I would always end a meal with ) has dropped dramatically, and so I have lost a few pounds, and it is body fat as I can tell from looking in the mirror !
I am now eating more protein ( fish ) and enjoying healthy food too rather than eating it out of duty. It is as if my body now has the hydration levels to work properly and so all my mechanisms such as hunger are more accurate.
Of course, we are all different, but I would like to bet that most people are like I was, especially if they have food issues.
Being properly hydrated also gives you a 'buffer zone' - I find that if I go out and eat less healthily and don't get chance to drink as much, then I am fine for a day, but I always feel really ready to get back to it the next day.
I sympathise if you are out and about tho, as I am at home 80% of the time and so it is easy for me being within 25 feet of a loo at all times !! When I first started this it felt inconvenient having to go all the time, but now it has levelled off and I am used to it and don't even notice that side of things really.
Anyway, the benefits are so great it is worth any inconvenience !
Have a go with the straw/warm thing !

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
definitely agree with the lukewarm thing, and if its first thing in the morning i put a couple of chunks of lemon in. I am certainly no expert, but as I understand it you shouldn't drink to much before a meal as the water has a diluting effect on the digestive enzymes etc in the stomach. so you need to plan your drinking!!! For a long time there has been this magical amount of 2 litres a day bandied about, and I think that is roughly equivalent to 4 pints (haven't got a ready reckoner so please forgive me if I am way off). And it is also better to sip than gulp it down in half pints at a time, as this can cause the stomach to distend, which makes it feel more empty quicker, when the fluid has filtered away...
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi Sugababe,
Yes, this is hardly revolutionary advice is it - the 2 litre thing has been around for ever; what I found revolutionary is actually doing it , and sticking to it religiously. It took about a week to feel any different and I wonder how many people really give it long enough to see the benefits.
I should have clarified the 'before you eat' thing too - ta for pointing that out - I leave 20 minutes before I eat and then the water has passed out of the stomach.
I certainly haven't had a problem with my tummy distending or feeling empty at all. It seems a bit of a mental barrier, this idea of a whole pint of water at once, which is silly if you consider how much volume of food and other drinks we eat !
Of course , this is all my own experiences, and I am just passing it all on in case it helps anyone out there.

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
good for you! Its really encouraging to hear that there are such positive benefits if you stick to it - I think we all want to see the effects instantly and get disheartened if they take longer than a couple of days to show!!
Because you are doing it sensibly and sipping through a straw (never seem to have any of these around - the kids always get there first...) you shouldn't ever get this 'stretch stomach' thing.
Thanks again for passing it on - its great to hear when something so simple works so well, and a timely reminder to actually get on and do it instead of just nodding agreement.

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hiya Ru!
Ive tried the luke warm water and it was a definate no no!!!
BUT-the straw made it sooo easy!!
The pint just disappears!
Thanks!

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
So pleased that tip helped you T !! Its amazing isn't it how it makes such a difference.
Just a tadge worried about your poor tummy if you are drinking cold water ! What did you not like about the lukewarm ?
Have you upped your pints per day ?
Love Ru xx
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hiya!
Luke warm tasted..erm..dirty! Like it should be hot but had gone a bit cold! Like drinking a cold cup of camomile tea! [:'(]
Mind you, it was first thing in the morning when Im a bit more tickly stomached!
Im only on about 3 a day max. (But Ive just finished my third!) It depends where I am in the day.
If Im at uni, then its hard to keep drinking it as I need the lav-so I tend to just sip thru lectures and consume most of it at breaks..

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
hello,
am going to try to drink 5 pints of tap water, probably increase it gradually as I`m bigger than both of you!
Do you think it will help with bulimia? That is the food cravings and then purging?
thanks X
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi Sarajo, sorry for the delay in answering you - if my experience is anything to go by then I would say that if you stick religiously to the water everyday, then you will find the urges to binge diminish greatly. For me they have gone altogether, and it is now 7 weeks since I started doing this.
I would advise you tho to try and drink either filtered water or bottled water, as tap water is not too great. Better than nothing but your body will appreciate purer water.
I hope you are doing well - please reply or pm me if you want any encouragement with this issue. Good luck !

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
thanks Ruminumi,
Have been drinking as much water as I can, and can honestly say it has made a difference to cravings! Very pleased!!
Not finding it too difficult to do - although think I should be drinking more - just doesn`t seem to be time!!
will try warm water with lemon in morning - although will be hard to give up my tea!!
thanks for your support![sm=hug.gif]
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi Sarajo,
can't tell you how pleased I am for you !! After 25 years of struggling myself it is just like winning the lottery to find a solution that just takes a bit of discipline but is so so easy to do, and so effective.
My husband started on the water about three weeks ago and has had another amazing thing happen ( He didn't have the food issues !) He has suffered from warts on his hands and verruccaes on his feet for several years, and the warts were spreading and becoming a real problem. He had tried several remedies, conventional and alternative with no luck. The other day he noticed that all the warts and verruccaes were dying and shrinking. The only thing he has done differently is to drink at least 4 pints of water a day. He is delighted and is now telling all his workmates about it, as they had knwon about his problem.
Another benefit has been to our relationship - we are both much calmer and don't annoy each other as much, our tolerance levels have risen and overall we are just far happier.
I keep imagining what would happen if everyone drank as much every day ! It could be quite astonishing !
Keep it up Sarajo, who knows what you can achieve in your life when you are not wasting energy on addictive behaviour - well done you ..

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
I have a slice of lemon in warm water every morning and I feel great after. It really rehydrates my system and I find I get withdrawal symptoms if I don't have it! It is great for cleansing my system first thing. I will drink more though, but I sometimes find it hard during the day as I am out a lot and driving, so I don't get to drink on the go as much as I'd like to. I do take water with me, but its just getting round to drinking it.
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
hi there,
I went out on Friday night and drank too much![:'(] - had a headache in morning [:o]
couldn`t face water so drank tea and it`s taken till today to get rehydrated!!!
Won`t do that again in a hurry!
Wonder if you have any tips on how I can help my husband?[:@]
He won`t drink anything but (full fat) coke and milk - mostly coke[8D]
I`ve explained, cajoled and pleaded till I`m blue in the face[sm=eeeK.gif] about how bad it is for him but he says: water makes him gag(!)[:'(] he doesn`t like squashes and has never ever drunk hot drinks (and wont[:-]) He refuses anything diet. ]
He sometimes drinks fizzy lemon flavoured water - but goes off it after a week or so.[X(]
He drinks lager when he goes out[sm=food-smiley-004.gif] - but rarely drinks at home.[&:]
He suffers from mood swings[sm=speechless-smiley-040.gif] (that`ll be the caffeine and sugar then!!!) and gets peaks and troughs of sugar cravings (on set of diabetes???)[sm=cat.gif]
I`ve stopped saying stuff to him as he just gets angry[sm=aaarg.gif] and says : what would I do if I couldn`t have the only thing I liked??? [sm=angry-smiley-030.gif]
Anyway he`s a stubborn old goat (but I love him!)[sm=1kis.gif] and don`t want him dying prematurely on me ![sm=mecry.gif]
(he also smokes like a trooper!)[sm=cool-smiley-027.gif]
What can I do???? [sm=banghead.gif]

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Hi Sarajo,
I feel for you here ! In my experience with family and clients, when it comes to recommending things that will help them, there is sometimes nothing that will make the person do what you wish them to do, and that is the hardest thing !! When you can see so clearly that they will feel so much better, and yet they stubbornly refuse to change their habits!
I think to just keep quietly reminding them, gently is all you can do, as anything more forceful they hear as nagging and that will turn them off even more.
My own transformations came only when I realised that I held ALL responsibility for myself. and when I got so utterly fed up of feeling grotty that I realised I had to either change or suffer a lifetime of misery. I had known about the water thing for a couple of years before I started to apply it to myself. DOH !!!!!!!!! Now of course it seems ridiculous that I did not do it sooner, but that applies to all the things I have changed over the past few years, like attitude, viewpoints, exercise etc etc.
I do not know what it is that makes some people unhappy enough to WANT TO CHANGE, the threshold that someone must cross before they say 'enough is enough' - it varies so much from person to person, and I think maybe it is to do with self esteem. I do know that as mine grew, my expectations about what my life should be grew too, and I found that what I had settled for was no longer acceptable to me. This gave me the motivation to do things differently. Maybe some people deep down do not feel worthy of a fabulous life in every way, and so accept poor health and treat themselves badly by eating crud and drinking poisons, because they they do not feel worthy of the best. Or perhaps it is just a lack of awareness that they could feel so much better - for so many people it is a gradual decline from childhood thro adulthood that they do not really notice how bad they feel most of the time.
Whatever the reasons, it is hard to see those you love suffering - but really it is their choice and I came to the conclusion that maybe the best way to influence is by example - this worked for my hubby as he saw all the benefits I was experiencing and then started to drink the water himself.
You could also watch 'supersize me' together - the guy lives on Macdonalds for a month and gets soooooo sick, his doctors beg him to stop - quite a shocker.
The other thing to tell your hubby is that tastes change - the things he likes now would be quite revolting to him if he had a healthier lifestyle. This is an absolute fact !

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
thank you ruminumi and Holistic,
I reasd thro the link and it`s scary stuff!!
I knew about the coke cleaning a car engine and also that you can disolve a pair of tights in a bowl of it too.
I`m not asking him to give it up completely (altho that would be great!) just drink it only once or twice a day and find a healthy alternative (if there is one - as everything is laced with asparatime or dosed up with sugar!)
Any way you are right Rumi - he`s got to make the decision himself - I`ll try and get him to read the discussion on it - so he`s better informed - from a source other than me!!
thanks for your input
could I get him hypnotised do you think?????
RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
You have rekindled my rehydration programme!
I fell by the way side, but what you have said has kick started my water habits! and why on earth we put our bodies and minds through such discomfort by simply not drinking enough water is beyond me!

RE: Dehydration and compulsive eating
Well thats motivated me to have a go as well.
I run about 2/3 times a week and finding it a real struggle at the mo, mind you the heat isnt helping ! But i have a lack of energy and dont sleep well at night.
Is it ok to put low sugar squash with the water as I find that makes it easier for me to drink it!
