I am going to sit my Massage Theory Exam on Tuesday and came across a couple of questions which I am not too sure about. I was wondering if somebody could point me in the right direction?
Q1) What would you do if you discovered a lump on your client's thight?
A) Massage as normal
B) Continue the massage and make a note of your observations on the record card
C) Complete the massage avoiding the area mentioning it to your client in passing and advise to have it checked
D) Stop the massage and advise your client to see a doctor
I am not sure if C or D. C would make sense in order not to alarm the client which sounds reasonable but D would make sense just in case the lump is cancerous and continuing the massage might spread the cancer? I am very puzzled now.
Q2 During the massage you discover a lump in your client's left calf. What action would you take?
A Continue the massage avoiding the lump
B Continue the massage avoiding the left lower leg
C Continue the massage ignoring the lump
D Stop the massage and advise your client to seek medical attention
Same situation again - do you stop the massage in case the lump is cancerous or do you avoid the lump or even the whole left lower leg?
Q3 You have a doctor's permission to give a full body massage to a client with hypertension. Would you:
A Give a light massage
B Give a 10 minute massage
C Give a vigorous massage
D Give a deep massage
I think it is A but I am not too sure
Q4 When massaging the front of the legs where would you place support
A under knees
B under ankles
C offer none
D under back
We were never taught about supporting the legs during massage in college so I have no idea - same thing with massaging the back of the legs - where would you place support?
A you would not need one
B under the hips
C uner the knees
D under the ankles
Q5 System of the body which has an indirect benefit of massage (don't know what the options are - does anybody know?)
Phew, I am starting to panick now and the worst exams (Practical and A&P) are still to come. My brain seems to go all blank - there is so much to remember:(
Thank you very much for your help. Good luck to everybody who is sitting exams next week!!

RE: Help with Questions needed please
These are my thoughts.
1. C Many people have lumps and bumps, which are of no significance what so ever. The appropriate action would be to avoid the area, but continue the massage so as not to alarm your client. Make a note on your records of your findings in case of future changes in the lump and inform that it should be checked by a GP. (obviously apply common sense).
2. B I would avoid the lower leg.
3. A You don't want to stimulate too much so avoid vigourous or deep massages which will force the blood more quickly to the heart.
4. D It avoids pressure on the lower back (When massaging the back use supports under the ankles, helps drain lymph to the popliteal)
5. Respiratory, Endocrine & Urinary would be my suggestion because all other systems have a direct benefit.
I did my A&P a couple of years ago now and as ITEC are continuously changing the goalposts it would be best to wait and see what the other responses are.
Good luck.
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Having done my Holistic last year and doing sports this year with ITEC I don't want to cause confusion but I have been told by my tutor that ITEC verge on the side of caution so the answer in my mind would be for questions 1 & 2 would be D. 3 would be A as you would want to relax a client with hypertension. 4 would be A, and if massaging the back of legs the support would go under the ankles. 5 Can't help you on that one with out any choices, just had larger dinner with wine!!!
Don't panic and take your time to read all questions before answering, as sometimes other questions give you the answer.
Good luck
RE: Help with Questions needed please
This is the trouble with ITEC and always has been. I've just had a skim through my L Tucker book (I just love it ;)) and she has stated that lumps and bumps are a local contraindication and it is ok to massage, but not over the affected area.
Sigh*.. I'm so sorry this will confuse you before the exam. All I can advise is to follow what you think ITEC will want to hear.
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Ooops sorry, I got confused on question 4 and read your options for part 2. [&o] Moonmaiden is right you must read all questions very carefully. Tut tut!
Q4. The correct answer is A
(ps. I've only had half a glass of wine, I must be getting old. LOL)
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Thank you so much for your help guys - this is really appreciated. I am so glad that I found this forum - it is priceless and all the past exam questions help me a lot for my revision.
I will let you know how the exam tomorrow goes - fingers crossed it will not be too bad
Have a lovely day!!

RE: Help with Questions needed please
Looked through my mock exam on the question about finding a lump and the correct ITEC answer was D. I have just done my Sports massage paper and the same question came up.
RE: Help with Questions needed please
I am amazed because the ITEC syllabus clearly states that undiagnosed lumps and bumps are a local contraindication. Baaah! Stupid ITEC clearly they make the rules up as they go along. I'm afraid I would still put C.
This questions was taken from 2004 ITEC paper
43. What would you do if you discovered a lump on your client’s thigh?
a) Massage as normal
b) Continue the massage and make a not of your observations on the record card
c) Complete the massage avoiding the area mentioning it to your client in passing and advise to have it checked
d) Stop the massage and advise your client to see a doctor
Answer: C
As I said you will have to make up your own mind on this one. I have had many Mock ITEC papers where the answers are incorrect (2 of which were in my sports massage paper)
RE: Help with Questions needed please
As a p/t tutor I thought I had better triple check with ITEC their stance on this so I didn't cause any confusion. I have spoken with an examiner who says it is a LOCAL contraindication.
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Would it make a difference if the question read unidentifiable lump on clients thigh?
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Looks as if I caused general confusion on this one - sorry guys. I think I will stick with C and hope for the best. Let's hope that this question does not pop up in the exam. Thanks again.

RE: Help with Questions needed please
I really wouldn't worry about unidentifiable as it is not for you to identify, simply avoid the area.
[sm=banghead.gif] If this type of question does come up in the exam don't sweat it, it is only 1 point. If you are really worried and want to double check ITEC do's and dont's skim over the syllabus (I assume you have one) but this is the link just in case.

Good luck, I know how worrying the first exams are, but really they are not that bad.
RE: Help with Questions needed please
Hiya,
Sat my exam Tuesday night and all the questions in the exam came up on this forum. I think the exam went quite well - thank you very, very much to everybody who keeps posting exam questions on this forum. This has helped me a lot and I hope that it will also help me with my practical exam on Monday and the dreaded A&P on end of the month.
AngelFish - one of the questions was about discovering a lump on your client's thigh - I chose C as an answer - we'll see.
Thanks again guys. Back to my books now and practising massaging for Monday.
Not quite sure what type of questions the examiner will ask during the practical exam and there was also some confusion in our course on wether we will be allowed to adjust the height of the couch during the treatment or not. Our tutor said that once we start massaging in our exam, that's it - we won't be allowed to adjust the height of the couch. Sounds silly to me as they are so keen on correct postures and as I prefer the couch/client to be higher for the chest and face routine but I guess there is nothing I can do about it. [:-]
