a) skin absorbs chemicals through the dermis
b) skin is a waterproof barrier
c) skin absorbs water through the epidermis
d) skin is non-waterproof

a) blood supply and sebaceous glands
b) blood supply and sweat glands
c) blood supply only
d) ?
3) which muscle closes the mouth?
Masseter?????
4) which muscle do you use when coughing?
5) which muscle do you use when opening a doorhandle?
6) which endocrine gland is related to the kidneys?
7) which system does acetylcholine work with?
Parasympathetic???????
8) what does blood tissue do?
9) which muscle raises trunk after sitting?
Gluteus maximus???????
10) what does the splenic artery supply apart from the spleen?
11) what speeds up transmission of nerve impulses?
Myelin Sheath or Nodes of Ranvier??????
12) where is the cervix?
in the uterus or between uterus & vagina?????

I am sure that I will come across lots and lots more questions over the next couple of days.
Thank you so much for all your help so far. It is much appreciated and I think I would be totally lost without this forum.
Good luck to everybody who is sitting exams - hope we all pass.

RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Sonne13, I can recommend a really good book called 'The concise book of muscles' by Chris Jarmey. It was the best money I have spent , it gives you good clear pictures, origin, insertion, action, nerve, basic functional movement. for most of the muscles I needed to learn for the ITEC A&P.
in answer to a couiple of questions. muscle used when coughing is transversus abdominis. muscle when turning a door handle or screwdriver. supinator. or turning a doorknob.pronator teres.
Good luck in your exams. I taking my final A&P tomoro morning....help!!!!
Andrea
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Andrea,
Thank you very much for your help. This book sounds fantastic - will try to get it today - thanks again.
And good luck with your A&P this morning. Will be thinking of you and keeping my fingers crossed. Let us know how you got along.
Good luck!
Son:)
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Sonne13,
I too would recommend that book that Andrea has mentioned - it lists a lot of the everyday actions of muscles and has excellent diagrams.
The book that we were given for studying for the ITEC A & P Diploma is by Louise Tucker and is an Introductory Guide to A & P. The answers to most of your questions can be found in there. That is the book that most of the ITEC questions come from.
Practice lots of past papers that you can find on this site as most of the questions keep getting repeated. I had seen practically all of my questions at some point on the past papers listed here when I came to sit my exam.
Good luck

RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Son , well I did my final A&P....oh dear........i think i may have to do a re-take, it was very difficult, I must admit it was very hard, not sure if it was just panic but a lot of the questions, were answers and we had to decide the question??? which could have been almost and of the 4 choices. I have list under 'past exam' some of the easy ones I could remember...if I think of any of the nasty ones i will list again, my brain is just mush just now.....good luck with yours...let me know how you go...
Andrea xx
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Andrea, Hi Tranquility,
Thank you so much for all your help and advice. Have been revising like mad over the past days (my head is spinning and I think I will be mixing up everything now [:o] and the Louise Tucker book has become my "bible" which I carry everywhere.
There are still two questions though which I still haven't figured out and I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction:
1) What does lymphatic tissue do?
a) filter and destroy hamful bacteria
b) produce anti-bodies
c) produce lymphocytes
d) absorb fatty droplets
According to the Louise Tucker book lymph tissue contains many types of cells:
phagocytes: -engulf and destroy harmful waste and bacteria
cells producing antibodies (lymphocytes)
cells dividing to form new lymphocytes
which means that answers a,b and c sound correct to me - or am I having a real blonde moment here and this is one of the ITEC trick questions again???
2) what effect does the parasympathetic nervous system have on digestion?
a) increase in excretion of pancreatic juice
b) increase in secretion of pancreatic juice
c) inhibition of secretion of digestive juice
d) inhibition of micturition
I keep reading through the passages of the book on the nervous system but just don't get this part.
Can anybody help please?
Thank you all so much again. Got the exam tomorrow and feel as if my brain has gone totally blank now.
Hope the exam won't be too nasty.
Son
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Sonne!
Here are some answers which seem to make sense to me:
2. b) Blood & sweat
3. Pterygoid muscle?
The masseter raises the mandible (lower jaw) and clenches teeth.
5. Pronator teres/supinator. Depends which way the handle goes!
6. ADH from the PITUITARY controls water re-absorption in kidneys.
7. generally, parasympathetic fibres use Ac.choline as transmitter.
9. Agree -gluteus maximus
11. Myelin sheath - acts as a kind of electrical insulator.
I have to say that it's 30 years since I did my physiol. degree & I don't always see what ITEC are aiming for, but hope these help.
Freddie
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Son
Thanks for asking these questions - I find it really helpful because then I get to see what I am also not confident about either and can work out what I think the best answer is. So, here are my answers to your questions:
1 b)
2 b)
3 to close the jaw: masseter; to close the lips: orbicularis oris
4 transvers adbominus
5 supinator
6 adrenal
7 parasympathetic
8 transports food and oxygen to body cells, removes waste from them, fights infection and clots
9 Gluteus maximus
10 Couldn't find anything else it supplies (haven't done an web search though, this may reveal something else)
11 Here's the tricky one because Louise Tucker doesn't differentiate much - the wording is different, but doesn't show a significant difference. Baillieres Nurses' Dictionary defines the Nodes of Ranvier as: a constriction occurring at intervals in a nerve fibre to enable the neurilemma with its blood supply to reach and nourish the axon of the nerve. And The Anatomy Colouring Book (which I have round incredibly useful and would recommend to anyone studying A&P) says of the myelin sheath: enhances impulse conduction rates and of Nodes of Ranvier: make possible rapid note-to-node impulse condution. So from this I would conclude that it's actually the presence of the myelin sheath which speeds up the transmission of nerve impulses and the Nodes of Ranvier are secondary in assisting this process.
12 Between uterus and vagina
13 c)
Good luck in your exams everyone!
RE: Help with A&P Questions please
Hi Sonne,
You may have taken your exam now, but here goes anyway with my idea of the answers to your questions -
1. Skin is a waterproof barrier
2. Blood supply & sweat regulate body temperature
3. Yes, I think it is masseter too
4. Transversus abdominis for coughing. (This came up in one of my exams and everyone around the room was discreetly coughing and feeling their tummy muscles!)
5. Supinator or Pronator Teres
6. Posterior lobe of pituitary secretes vasopressin which regulates water absorption in the kidneys
7. Parasympathetic
8. Blood tissue does all sorts of things - what are the options?
9. Yes, I think gluteus maximum too. A trickily worded question, this one, which came up in my A&P exam on Wednesday. (By the way, I have posted all the questions for A&P I could remember - may be of help if you haven't yet sat your exam)
10. No idea - the VEINS from the spleen join up with the hepatic portal system ...
11. According to the esteemed L Tucker, both myelin sheath AND nodes of Ranvier speed up nerve transmission... Good old ITEC strikes again perhaps?
12. Cervix lies between vagina and uterus
13. Must be C because only digestive inhibitory answer - micturition is a function of the urinary system, not the digestive.
Hope this helps. Good luck with the exam - or hope it went well!
