RE: Diet & Nutrition Questions Answered

Hey again,

Let me know what course or area that you studing - ie beauty therapy, and a list of subjects, then i should be able to tell you your options.

Have you talked to your tutor about your doubts?

My main concern would be that if you drop the subject from your course that you wouldnt get your over all award eg. Sports therapy diploma, instead it would be individual awards eg. diploma in sports massage.

Get back to me then I'll be able to be more help!

Rj. 🙂

Hey Ducky,

Ok where do I begin !!!

That is a massive work load for you to have to do and I fully understand what the pressure and stress would be like to have that many subjects in one year as you said - madness!

In terms of doing the nutrition - my students have all done a basic nutrition course before they begin the Itec Diet and nutrition in second year- this way they find the course less of a work load more of a top up. I was wondering if that was the case on your course. If you havent done nutrition before the Itec course is quite challenging to say the least. The aim of the nutrition is to have a full understanding of the basics -but to be able to give dietary advise to help treat commom ailments .

You'll have to weigh up your options - are you gearing yourself to having or working in a clinic, practising your therapy skills ? -in that case will you need your nutrition ? Or are you into the nutrition and want to take it further and say for an example work with a nutritional therapist?
My students qualify as sports therapists and nutrition plays a major role in working with clients so its a must.

Which subjects do you enjoy the most and look forward dealing with everyday of your life?

Then there is the passing factor, you should talk to your teachers about how you are getting on and whether they feel that you will gain an good grade - you could always drop your weakest, but then again most students put the majority of the work in just before the exam!!

Have a think, talk to your tutors, ask them about employment when your qualified and what therapies are the most popular.

let me know,

Rj 🙂

RJ,

I have just registered for the ITEC Diet & Nutrition Course, (or rather waiting for the paperwork!) Anyway, I have bought a few of the recommended text books : The Food Bible ; The Optimum Nutrition Bible ; Nutrition for Dummies ; However I was wondering if you had any other recommendations for reading material? Or sites that are worth visiting?

I start my course 30th Sept. but really want to be well up to speed before I start. I have already got my ITEc A&P and Massage whichI did a few years ago, so have a fiar few massage and A&P books already.

Can you offer me any further advice?

Thanks in advance,
hippychick x

RE: Diet & Nutrition Questions Answered

Hi there Hippychick,

Yeah the food bible, optimum nutrition bible, nutrition for dummies are all good books for this course. I use also the following books which are also helpful and straight to the point:

A practical approach to nutrition - Suzanne Le Quesne ( thomson)
500 health and nutrition questions answered - Patrick Holford
Hidden food Allergies, Is what you eat making youill? -Patrick Holford & Dr.James Braly.
100% health - Patrick Holford -quite technical though!

The first three are excellent- you proberly know this but you can go online to the ITEC website, look for C. Therapies and down load everything that youneed..................

If your interested -on the Patrick Holford website you can have a 100% Health Report- your personal nutritional programme done, it takes about half an hour, there are questions which you have to answer about your diet and current state of health( tick the box) and they will email you a programme( mine is 8 pages)letting you know where you are deficientor overeating of some foods. Very educational and worth while - where is acharge though - cant remember how much _ Sorry !

Its also worth while keeping an eye out for workshops of Patricks -I did a 2 day workshop last year and found itgreat. He does do lunch time lectures.Have a look and keep oneye on dates near you. He normally covers areas such as Defining health, Balancing your blood sugars, Improving your digestion, Detox your body, Is your water fitto drink, Reduce inflammation, Boost your immune System, Solve skin problems, Supplementation, Balance your hormones and mood, break the addications andtake charge of your health, Lose weight and look great, Psychocalisthenics, Reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and dementia.

If you have loads of time tokill over the summer start making your self aware of what is in the health food shops and try to collect menus, as you will need ideaswhen it comes to doing your case studies, it will cut down on the time you will spend on them in the long run.Try and get your hands on menus for a particular group ie: lactose intolerant or vegan ect ....

Have you ever done nutrition before- school, college? If notit would be best for you to read over the main food groups first and try to getyour head around them! -carbohyrates, proteins andfats .

Hope this is of some help to you,
Keep intouch

hi RJ
I'm looking to start Diet & Nutritionin September, but i don't know if it would be better to do a full degreein nutritional therapy. will this fit in well with my massage and reflexology. and is it worth reading the books that go to the course, before i start? sorry if these sound like silly questions.
thanks Tilly.

RE: Diet & Nutrition Questions Answered

Hi Tily
Sorry for the delay. The Itec diet and nutrition is really geared towards supporting your other subjects like massage and reflexology personal trainner where you can offer nutritional advice to your clients . However, if you are planning on using nutrition in more depth working along side dietians ectthen a degree would be more recognised and would be in more depth and detail. It all really depends on what you have planned as your career path ? Are you going to be working as a therapist or in a more clinical medical area?

You could try the Itec nutrition course and then if you decide that it is for you - you could do the degree.

The degree will have more impact on paper but would you need it in that much detail to work as a therapist?

If nutrition is your thing Id do the degree- it will be hard work but worth it.

Hope that is of some help
No question is a silly question !
