RE: five ways to boost your brain...

Yes, my problem with mental arithmetic is that I don't do any! Need to practice that!

Tony Buzan's mind maps were taught to be way back when I was at school. Our Biology teacher thought they were a brilliant way to revise, and I use them all the time, I just didn't know thats what they are.

We moved offices recently, and I even used one to plan that. Much easier than trying to sort out a logical order for things and keep them in straight lines!

Hi,
I have to do IP addressing and subnetting for my job, and to pass the exams that are a requirement of the industry.

the best way to do this is by practicing it as a mental arithmatic exercise. In everyday working it is easier to use a subnet calculator but if you get asked a subnet question on the spot you can look a bit silly if you dont know the answer and you refuse to even think about it without the calculator.

IP is at version 4 at the moment which uses a 32 bit address. Version 6 is to use a 128 bit address and I, like everyone else in our industry will be expected to get my head round it.

I think if I manage that then I will definately be able to work my change out in the shop and I might even start playing darts again, I was always put off by the mental subtraction that everyone else seemed able to do much quicker than I could.

Hi Dunkirk,

Today I was in a museum about "How things were" - and there was a cash till with three tabs that would pop up ... for pounds, shillings, and pence. To the uninitiated like my companion that was 12 pence made up one shilling, and 20 shillings made a pound. So a product might cost you £3 - 5s and 11!/2pence. Now, when it came to adding a load of those up - at the time it seemed easy. Maybe we should have kept that system for its mental gymnastics?

I am old enough to remember £ shillings and pence, and I still think in terms of 'old money.' I was 12 years old when decimalisation came in.

Did you know that the portrait of 'Britannia' on the old pennies was actually a portraitofone of King Charles ll's mistresses, a certain Lady Arabella Stuart or 'La Belle Stuart' as she was fondly known? She must have been quite an accommodating lady, for she slept with both King Charles and his brother James (later King James ll) and had a child by James.

Those were the days, madam! :D:D

Hi V,
I think your right. A bloke I work with is about the same age as me and was saying that when IPv6 comes in, those of us that used to deal with imperial measurements should be ok.

The 128 address base is hexidecimal which sounds pretty frightening until you consider that at primary school we used to haveto learna number system based on 16 ounces making a pound. 14 pounds make a stone and 8 stone make a hundredweight.

IPv6 should be a piece of cake providing you measure your cake ingredients using imperial measurements and you don't use hydrogenated oil.

Dunkirk.
