Hi

I bought two salt stone candle holders back in April and I've recently noticed that they are sitting in water. They appear to be 'weeping', one more than another.... Could they be drying out? I have put them to lie upturned in the sun now to see what happens. Should I be lighting a candle in them more often to help this moisture evapurate...??

Any ideas???!!!!!!

Thanks

Well... with them being salt, there's a good chance that they are actually soaking up moisture from the air at certain times and then "sweating" that water back out at other times depending on the room conditions and candle temperatures etc. I'm just trying to figure it out in my head, but it's a bit late at the minute, so if I have any insight as to the hows and whys in particular, I'll come back and post again.

Hi redraven,

Any more news on the salt candle holders?

I too, have been racking my brains for an answer to this puzzle, but can't think of one. Normally, water evaporates from salt, leaving the grains behind.

Hmmm.....[:-]

Only if the conditions lend itself to the water evaporating. If you leave a pot of salt in humid conditions then the salt will clog together as it absorbs some of the moisture. That's why I think it's a case of changing conditions; the salt absorbing moisture from the air and then the changing condition causing it to evaporate through the mass of salt and concentrate on the surface to create the visible water.

Perhaps.

RE: Weeping Salt candle holders??

understand this occurance like this: if you ingest a very salty meal, you retain water. Or if you have a bath full of salts, such as epson salts, you need to drink lots of water in order to conteract the toxins that are being drawn out by the salt.
In this way, you can clearly understand that your environment is such that the moisture from the air is being drawn into the candle in the warmth times {like a sponge} and is released when the cool air fills the environment.
It really is a very delightful thing when you consider the wonderful link it establishes with the air in the interaction, and with the earth in its formation, and with the fire of the candle, and with the energy of your home. This is a valued treasure, see it as a wonderful gift and treasure the changing nature in the interaction.
in order to soak up the moisture, consider placing it on something pourous and allow your heart to guide you.
This can be a large plate in the middle of your dining room table in which you place fresh moss and pieces of nature such as nuts and leaves, then the candlestick holders will form part of an all encompassing arrangement that celebrates the seasons of nature. In the breathing of the candlesticks you will have a living part of nature in all it's glory in your home. these are truly gifts and meant to give you insights and comfort...
some thoughts...northstar
