RE: five ways to boost your brain...

I would like to know more about exercising your brain. I'm a book keeper by trade, but I can't add up for toffee. Yet when I had part time jobs in bars, it was easy to add up rounds of drinks (back in the dim and distant past before the till did it all for you!).

I had a go on a Nintendo DS and that was fun and got the brain working, but I can't afford one of those.

Any ideas?

Hi Calmyourmind,
I have heard that doing daily crossword puzzles is good for exercising the mind. Not that I ever do them!
If you want to delve deeper, Tony Buzan has some great books on memory improvement i.e. Use Your Head, etc

Thank you for that idea. I rarely do crosswords, although I have a book in the bathroom! I will get a pen!

I agree with Who? - and it's not just crosswords. Years back, for my A-levels, and much later for a degree as a mature student, I didn't want the nervousness or doubts of "Will I know the essay answers? Will I think of the best replies?" Using Buzan-style methods I found it possible to first write out model essay answers for an hour of work, get about 25 of those prepared for each exam, and memorise them word for word.

Anyone who's done this will understand the method: you link ideas and subjects with a crazy, insane visualisation, then connect the visualistions up together, one leading into another as a crazy "story". It's not done in a moment, but it works great.

To not forget any of your model essays, you can also link each of the opening 25 images up too into another crazy story. The point is that imagery, and startling imagery, is the easiest thing to memorise. So just a couple of images, say, would remind me of two whole paragraphs.

Hi calmyourmind,

I too, am a book keeper. I was hopeless at maths at school, truly I was. I couldn't do them for toffee. Even simple adding up was my nemesis. My numerical ability only improved when I went to work in a baker's shop that didn't have an electronic till. We Saturday girls had to add up the prices of the cakes and bread in our noggins, and I developed a very quick brain for maths. I realised that I did have an aptitude for maths and I trained to become an accountant, which I still am.

I find that as well as the other things on the list, getting plenty of sleep is another asset to boosting brain power.

Patsy.
