RE: five ways to boost your brain...
wayfarer, you are so right. And how simple that is.
I reply because in just recent days I have seen people close to me not drink anything like enough fluid. And I also, in long hikes, a couple of times I got into the habit of not drinking too, though I did have H2O on me.
There's an SAS or Special Services advice to members that if your urine is quote orange and smelly unquote then you are not drinking enough. it should be clear and frequent.

Great post, Northstar! I would just like to add that for those of us who are vegetarians, instead of eating fish, we can take Omega-3 fish oil supplements. 🙂
RE: five ways to boost your brain...
Erm, would that not come down to ingesting the same thing? Or does a swallowed capsule make it "different"?
Vegetarians might like to look into flax seed oil as an alternative, but would suggest comparison of omega 3, 6 and 9.

No, not the same thing at all. At least, I've never known any vegetarians who didn't take those supplements or who had any problems with them. Most Vitamin A contains fish liver oil, and I don't know of anyone who has a problem with that either.
Vegetarian normally means not eating flesh. Some vegetarians don't eat dairy products or foods containing animal byproducts as well, but not all vegetarians. I've been a vegetarian my entire life and am considered a lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I don't have a problem with it. It might depend on how strict a vegetarian one is or whether one is a vegan, as opposed to vegetarian.

Yes, flax seed oil is good, although I have a friend who is not able to take it because it contains estrogen and tends to increase her estrogen levels too much. But that's the first I had ever heard of that. I knew that ginseng contains a lot of estrogen so women need to be careful of ingesting too much, but I had never heard of flax seed oil causing problems before my friend mentioned it.
Omega-3 (not familiar with 6 or 9 but will look into those) is also recommended for those with certain disorders such as depression, OCD, and the like. It's sometimes referred to as "brain food" and is known to help those needing SSRI's (selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors).

I would agree that a healthy balanced diet is to be seen as a positive in many ways including brain function, however this is a very questionable statement from northstar
"use vitamin suppliments to imitate a nutrient-full diet of our ancestors"
Firstly, which of our ancestors had the nutrient-full diet? Also vitamin suppliements would not be required for the general population eating a balanced diet. In high doses harm could be inflicted, at best the only effect they will have is making your urine vitamin rich.
If your diet sucks then selected suppliments, not just vitamin, would help.
