Has anyone ever put them together and been successful? I was thinking of getting one mini lop eared rabbit and a big guinea pig because I think they're adorable, the hutch we're thinking of getting is quite big 48" and it's one of those double decker one's where it's got a ladder that goes down into a run, I've heard they get on alright as they're sociable animal's but what about feeding? Is there any food's that both guinea pig's and rabbit's will eat? and also how do you groom rabbits? I heard that they don't like to be picked up but how can ya groom them when you can't pick them up?

Well thank you in advance 🙂

RE: thinking of getting rabbit and guinea pig

Hi Julie

I used to have a guinea pig and a rabbit but I think I was one of the lucky ones, I've seen loads of scraps and cuts due to the two family pets fighting. I think the general concensus now is to have two guinea pigs or two rabbits. You might be ok if they are both young enough though....

A general rabbit mix will probably be ok but you need to check out what you can and cant feed them for the additional vitamins and minerals. I heard that cucumber isnt very friendly to guinea pigs tummies. Perhaps grabbing a small book on each would be helpful in making your decision.

With regards to grooming and handling, the more you do it, the more used to it they will get. As long as it is a nice experience for them (ie doesnt occur too often or brushed to hard, held too tightly etc) then they will be ok.

Hope that helps a bit!

Please dont!

PLEASE please please do not put a rabbit and a guinea-pig together i cannot stress this enough!!! They are too different to house together and have different dietary requirements.

After a certain age rabbits can become very boisterous and can severely hurt guineapigs due to their strong back legs. Many people make the mistake of housing them together and many rescues and even vets will tell you the same as me..

Guinea-pigs cannot produce their own vitamin C so they need their own type of food lots of veg and hay to supplement this, rabbits have their own types of food as well so you cannot let them eat eachothers..

I have both rabbits and guinea pigs so if you need anymore help just let me know... but please dont get one of each [sm=mecry.gif]

Thanks for listening [sm=hug.gif]

It is up to you which animal you get. I have both but prefer guinea-pigs however these need a bit more looking after as they are not as 'hardy' as rabbits. Piggies dont like it too hot or too cold and they like to be in quiet places away from dogs and other animals they may see as a threat.

Is this your first pet? I would probably recommend you get a rabbit maybe a mini lop..

Rabbits need a large hutch it should be big enough that it can stand up on its hind legs and still have room above its head. I think mine are 4 foot by 2or 3 foot.. hutches need to be off the ground in a nicely sheltered area away from direct sunlight or where they may get wet.

You will also need to get a run or pen for your rabbit to have a stretch and play unless your garden is very secure but mine are all diggers so you have to keep an eye on them 😀

There are so many products for rabbits at the moment but mine are all fed on Rabbit exel which is a pellet food as this stops them from selective feeding. They will also need hay to eat and fresh veggies too, not forgetting fresh water.

Bedding - I use a layer of woodflakes (not sawdust as this is too small for animals and can cause eye, ear and anal problems) then a nice thick layer of straw.

You will also need to speak to your vet about injections and if you want to have them spayed or neutered etc. Pets are costly and you will need to take all of this into consideration before buying your pet.

And of course theres all the poor old buns at rescue centres that are looking for a nice new home - maybe you could go and visit your local centre so you can go and handle some and see what type of rabbit you want.

Keep us posted...

RE: thinking of getting rabbit and guinea pig

thanks guys 🙂 I understand a lot more now, I shall probly get rabbit's then because that was what I was going to go for anyway the hut should'nt be a problem it's 48" wide not sure how tall but it's £85 one of the most expensive one's at the pet store so that should not be a problem. I don't think I would let them run around in the garden cos I'd be scared of harming them, my next door neighbour's got cat's and I'd be scared of them chasing them or something 🙁 oh yea and it is my first pet well apart from fish but they don't need that much looking after lol.

RE: thinking of getting rabbit and guinea pig

Thats nice to hear 🙂

If your going to get more than one rabbit then probably two females would be better. Bucks will be ok for a couple of months but rabbits reach puberty at 6 months old so they could end up fighting and you would need to get them neutered.. but its up to you of course 😉 my boy is much more better behaved than my girls so it could swing either way.

I originally bought two rabbits to go together (girls) and they got to a certain age when they just didnt want to be near eachother lol so i had to fork out for seperate hutches they prefer to be on their own.

Yeah its best to let them out in a run in the garden you never know what predators are around... better to be safe than sorry..

Well good luck with your new pet, im sure they will bring you lots of happiness 😀 You never know you may end up like me and end up with 15 pets hee hee!!

RE: thinking of getting rabbit and guinea pig

I went to 5 different pet stores over the past two week's and they all seem to put rabbits and guineas together I dunno whether it's cos they ain't got enough room or what but I did notice that this one guinea pig kept biting this one rabbit's tail and chasing him, he did'nt seem to mind the tail biting cos he just stayed there but I was quite suprised at this cos rabbit's are bigger hmm I dunno 😮

Julzei

All pet stores i go to (and i go to alot as i have to buy lots of feed and bedding etc for all my troops...) i have not seen rabbits mixed in with guineas. They are NOT supposed to be mixed in together and it is bad that those pet stores are doing this as its setting a bad example, it just shows that they dont know alot about them.

It is quite simple... keep rabbits with rabbits and guinea pigs with guinea pigs!!

Try looking for bunnies on these are usually house bred rabbits and will of been much better looked after.

Have to agree with XF here, some small pet shops (and I'm not saying all, just some) only have one thing in mind ££££ and theres lots of it to make in the world of animals.

Theres an article in conjunction with the RSPCA that you might find interesting

Thanks for the links, those pet people should'nt be doing that then the lady we talked to did'nt seem to know what she was talking about anyway. Oh yeah a pet shop in my town has the largest rabbit in the world there and we went to see it, it's 2 feet long and 2 and a half stone it was on the news aswell dunno if you saw it but it was in a tiny little cage I felt well sorry for it.

few more question's

how much does it cost to get a rabbit spayed/neutered?
is it ok to put 2 female's/male's together?
how old do they have to be before they can be spayed/neutered?

Hi Julie, I'm not sure where you are but I think there are rabbit rescues (or rescue centres that have rabbits amongst their animals) all over the UK. Unfortunately lots are bought for children who then get bored and the rabbits end up in rescue 🙁

I would imagine that you would be asked for a donation if you were to adopt a rabbit from rescue, in just the same way as you would if you were to adopt another animal BUT you will probably find most rescues will have already neutered the rabbits to prevent any problems/enable male/female to live together etc. Obviously their main interest is ensuring a loving permanent home where the animals will not be bred from.

If you have a look at Dog Pages, you'll see there's a section on Cats and Other Animals - have a look [link= http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?act=SF&s=749067338e93a46de1e0b10cbc782699&f=18 ]HERE[/link] - if you join the forum you could ask on that section if anyone can recommend a rabbit rescue in your area, or have a look on google. The people on dog pages would also be able to advise on neutering etc.

Good luck 🙂 If you need any help looking for rescues in your area, let me know where you are and I'll be pleased to help 🙂

Edited: Sorry, didn't realise Hopefull had already posted a link to a list of rescues 🙂

RE: thinking of getting rabbit and guinea pig

I agree with everyone that rabbits and guinea pigs are not a good combination. They are different animals altogether.

Please do not get rabbits from pet shops or free add papers. Instead help to give an unwanted, homeless bunny another chance. To find a rescue/rabbit near you go to: [link= http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk ]Rabbit Rehome[/link].
