Got serious problem here, I'm covered in bites and dermatitis in reaction to them. The little ***** are everywhere despite doing all we can. We steam and hoover everyday and the cat is treated. I can't sleep for them biting. Trouble being I can't use the sprays for the house, I'm scared to use them around my children, especially my baby. The fleas are worse in our bedrooms too. The idea of chemicals that affect the nervous system worries me alot.
We've had cats for years and never had it this bad before.

RE: Fleas

Hi Moogyboobles,

We recently had a horrible flea problem too... Firstly what are you treating your cat with? The treatments that you buy from the shops and flea collars don't work for full-on infestations. We had to go to the vet who gave us a six month supply of Stronghold (back of the neck treatment), which completely got rid of the fleas on the cat and around the house in a matter of days. It kills the fleas that bite the cat and it breaks the life cycle by killing the eggs. It also killed any fleas that were in our rugs, etc so we didn't have to spray the house at all. It will also treat worms and ear mites at the same time. Once the fleas are gone, you keep applying it every month (or every two months in the very cold months) and it acts as a preventative.

As for treating your cat using essential oils, I've read conflicting reports as to whether it's safe to put essential oils on cats so cannot advise. Anyhow, essential oils would only repel the fleas and leave them to bite another day. Perhaps if you treated yourself using an essential oil in a massage oil or cream before you go to bed, this might stop them going for you.

I think that the warm summer and autumn months have given cats and houses a worse infestation than normal, something to look forward to every year with global warming I expect!

Hope that helps,

RE: Fleas

I can't remember exactly what the vet said about how it does this... somethingabout wherever the cat goes about the house, the fleas that live there will die when they then go to bite the cat andalso the fleas droppings, which are everywherethe cat goes, kill the fleas that are living in the rugs andbedding, etc.I can't think how else it would work, but it definitely got rid of the fleas in our house. Probably best to check exactly how it happens with the vet.

Thanks for the reply. I don't actually need to consult a vet, since I don't have any animals at the moment ... other than the resident spiders that is! I was just curious about how Stronghold could kill (presumably) live fleas in the rugs.

I did use Stronghold on my dog when she was alive, but that was just as a precaution because I have wild rabbits come into the back garden and I asked the vet if there was anything she could catch from them. I had meant in the way of diseases, because she was getting rather old and frail by this stage, but the vet said the only things she could catch might befleas.

I've also used the environment flea sprays successfully in the past, but again not for fleas ... they were very effective against the occasional infestations of flying ants during hot dry summers in Essex. Perfectly safe for dogs who were sent outsideinto the garden until the spray had dried and the corpses beenhoovered up.

Your mention of fleas in the bedrooms made me wonder if they might actuallynot be fleas but bed bugs, and I recalled an earlier thread, which may be of interest, particularly this post:
