I am a Reiki Practitioner and am getting very interested in treating animals as well as humans. Does anyone know if I need special training to be able to treat animals.
I have looked on the internet and seen a distance learning course with Stonebridge college, the sylabus looks good but i am not sure thatdistance learning would be the best way of learning this therapy. I think some hands on trainingmight be better.
Does anyone have any experience of distance learning for this type of healing, or any sugestions for good courses in the UK.

RE: Energy Healing For Animals
I think you're right re: the correspondence course. I think practical experience is really the best training you can get- especially where wriggly animals are concerned!!
I know someone who does animal healing courses, and I'm happy to send you her website address and contact details by PM if you wish.I've met her at Mind Body Soul exhibitions in the past and attended lectures, she's very down to earth and enthusiastic in what she does. She is also a member of the NFSH (national federation spiritual healers) which is the largest healing organisation in the UK.

RE: Energy Healing For Animals
Hi Jessica,
I am a Reiki Practitioner and am getting very interested in treating animals as well as humans. Does anyone know if I need special training to be able to treat animals.
Well as you are already a reiki practitioner and have some experience it is not so much the reiki you need to learn if that if what you wish to do but the working with animals side of things.
As to whether you need any special training...depends really, for example, if you are very experienced in handling or working with horses then there is no reason why you cannot give healing to a horse. Same with a dog or any other type of animal.
If you are asked to treat an animal that is unwell you must insist that the owner seeks veterinary advice in addition.
It is good to know your client though...for example, we might go and give healing to a person and are often able to notice if a person is unwell and it is easy to suggest a visit to the GP is needed..even if client has not said they are ill.
If you do not know your horses or dogs it would be easy to not notice something or mishandle them.
So, novice handlers should only treat animals that are under their owner's supervision, are safe and happy to be handled..more complicated cases should be left to those who know what they are doing.
I have written into my reiki first degree manual a very small section on reiki for animals...do let me know if you would like to see it in case it is helpful.
Animals often love reiki and respond extremely well to it,
Good Luck

RE: Energy Healing For Animals
Hi Azalia, thanks for the link I will contact her and let you know how i get on.
Hi Hal
Thanks for your reply, yes we did cover a bit about Reiki and animals on one of my Reiki courses and I have read a bit more on the subject since. I have also used Reiki on my own pets so i know hou well animals take Reiki.
I was approached the other day from a client asking if I could treat her neighbours dog, and that got me thinking do I need special training to go out as an animal healer?
I have looked a lot on the internet and see you can get an animal healer practitioner certificate, the courses teach about anatomy of animals etc and i thought if i was going to do it i should do it properly, however i dont know if a distance learning course would be any good as i would think you would need hands on training, but then its better than nothing.
I think i will keep up the training with the pets I have and the right course will come along when i need it.

Hi Jessica
You might like to have a look at the thread pinned to the top of the forum "Who can treat animals". There are some links there as well as useful information.
As for the communication with animals aspect, there have been threads on that too, which would come up if you do a search.
I also noticed a couple of entries in Events, which is right at the very top of every page, in the blue bar directly underneath the banner.

RE: Energy Healing For Animals
Hi Debbie,
If you are treating an animal with reiki you would not be manipulating their bodies or giving any diagnosis or advice other than to get veterinary attention if the dog is ill. So, the need for anatomical and physiological knowledge is down to personal choice.
Any low key course in A & P that touches on the surface can really do no more than provide a topic of interest, it cannot really enable you to enhance the treatment you are giving. Also because reiki works for the greater good and will go where needed.
One way if you are unused to working with animls and as a starting point to practice is to use their main chakras as a guide for hand positions, or hands off posiions..and then work intuitively.
For working with animals I would suggest that practical experience of handling or working with a particular animal is more crucial than anything else. Mishandling can cause distress and even potential harm to the animal or yourself and those around you.
Then you may need to decide what your limits are.
You see, I have dogs and a yard of horses. Most of these horses and dogs are easy going, very well behaved and friendly, if someone wished to practice reiki on them I would hapily let them however mch horse experience they had, provided I was watching and helping.
If the horse to be treated was highly strung, upset, difficult etc I would only allow(myself of course) but someone who has a great deal of experience of tricky horses.
Is this dog ill? Is he placid? Are you used to dogs? If you are confident that you are able to work with him i can see no reason why you shouldn't.
If you are ever treating animals you must be aware that if you are left alone with them this could have implications for insurance. it is sensible to insist that owners are present and taking full responsibility for their animals while you give the treatment.
I have looked a lot on the internet and see you can get an animal healer practitioner certificate, the courses teach about anatomy of animals etc and i thought if i was going to do it i should do it properly, however i dont know if a distance learning course would be any good as i would think you would need hands on training, but then its better than nothing.
You do not have to have training to heal animals, if you wish to learn more though a distance course might be very helpful.
If however you are not experienced with handling animals or confident about working with animals that are unknown to you, I would certainly suggest that supervised, practical training is a must.
Kindest regards,
Hal
RE: Energy Healing For Animals
Just thought I would add the fact that when we are asked to give Reiki to animals it is usually for a reason. The animal needs it and is usually sick. Sick animals behave unpredictably. I have lived with animals all my life and now help them on a daily basis. I as well trained as I possibly can beand have insurance and certificates to back me up.
Be very wary of treating large animals with no knowledge, in fact don't try it! A horse can be a killing machine and a nervous ill horse with a learning reiki-bod is a recipe for disaster. Hovering hands usually will set the horse off, you have to change your reiki methods to suit the animal and the condition, some prefer touch others will freak at it. Some conditions will react badly to extra energy being piled on willy nilly. Some blockages have to be cleared in turn to avoid excess inflamation and more cellular damage.
Go on as many courses as you can, read as much as you can and start out with an experienced practitioner, very slowly, don't get carried away when you have success with calm animals, the next one may dent you seriously. This may read hard but its very true.
Good Luck and best wishes
RE: Energy Healing For Animals
Hi Jessica, I work as a professional animal communicator and energy therapist for animals. I did reiki first also then did the stonebridge course which I have to say is the most indepth course I've ever done (even know a few animal healers who couldn't keep up with the depth of it) I also run workshops covering both subjects. Working with animal energy systems do have a few differences though many think there isn't any difference. You are welcome to PM me. Holly
