I think there was a thread some time ago about organic veg box schemes - which ones people had tried / liked / disliked etc, but I can't find it, so I will start another. Thinking of trying one this year. What are people's experience of them? Any you would recommend? I live in Essex so anyone in that area found a good local one?
I'm in Essex, and I have used riverfordsacrewell.co.uk, used to have a weekly box, sadly can't afford it right at this time x
I have been using Riverford for over a year now and am very happy with them.
I believe they deliver in many areas. Have a look at the website. What I like is that I can see in advance what's in the various boxes. A minibox lasts me two weeks sometimes as I'm on my own. The first time I had a box delivered it sat on my kitchen table and I swear it just exuded goodness. You don't have to place a regular order: I just phone my local agent when I want one. They're nice people and the veggies are super.
Yes - I had a look at Riverford and thought they looked good, so it is nice to have a recommendation. I think I'm going to give them a go. Thanks.
Not tried them myself but have heard several people say these were good -

We used them for a while, but found we weren't getting through all the box, even the smaller one; so stopped using them.
Good quality veg and fruit though.
I've decided I'm going to get a veg box every two weeks this year instead of getting my veg from the supermarket. I'm going to use Riverford - looks good and I've heard lots of good feedback about them.
Also found this one which looks good. They don't let you modify your box, like Abel and Cole do, but all their produce is locally grown and sourced, which does appeal to me. Only good for Essex though I think.
Hi Celtia - don't know if this is of any use to you?
Suma wholefoods are a good place to order natural orgainc foods. We are part of a food cooperative that makes up their minimum order value of £250. They are good for basic staple foods and organic stuff, but don't do fresh veg. Plus they are a cooperative which makes them a nice, ethical company to deal with. Their website is
If you think the minimum order is too much, i think you can also order direct over the internet at
Thanks,
Amy

min £250, I have to make do with whatevers left at the end of the month for shopping lol
I used to use Abel & Cole and they were very good but a bit pricey. More often than not I will now buy organic produce from local stores. I am lucky to have lots of small independent stores near me and farm shops and the prices are much better if you don't mind picking them up yourself. The problem I found with the organic boxes was that oftentimes we could not use it all and it would end up spoiling quite quickly so it became a little expensive.
Have you ordered a box yet Celtia ?
I haven't No. I am being very disorganised about it. Actually to be fair to me, I am on jury service at the moment and it is quite a long case so I am finding it difficult to organise anything at the moment. I think I am going to try out Abel and Cole though when I get back to normal.
Ah well that's fair enough
Thank you Sunanda for the Riverford link. I ordered and will do in the future. Very yummy !!!
Sadly they also do meatboxes..organic or not, animals dont want to be eaten but that is a different subject and i will write my oppinion direct to them.
I love Riverford, they are really helpful and you can choose individual items now opposed to the old days of getting your box and trying to work out what some of the veg was and then what to do with it.... really good if you have time on your hands to be creative but I personally like to choose my own. Its so nice to get the veg still with mud on and it really lasts so much longer than the supermarket veg. If you have kids though and have a local farm nearby it is really lovely to pick your own. My boys are now expert carrot and cabbage diggers and its so satisfying to cook and eat what you have just dug up :0)
I find it just as easy to buy my organic produce for the local supermarket, it's also quite a bit cheaper
It's nice to support local sellers and growers, but organic costs more to begin with and these box schemes, even more
Just my experience and of course I appreciate this may not be so in other areas!
x
This is I find a good comprehensive list of Organic produce for those who wish to do thier homework
I agree with your price point view tarotlady however IMHO I really dont like the supermarkets values and therefore would rather pay slightly more than support thier buying methods
Well I have ordered my first order from Riverfords and it is coming today. It is one off as it is pricey and it is to see if the veg and fruit any good if so maybe order now and then.

How is everyone getting on with their boxe services? I've order from Organic food delivery. Organic vegetable boxes, fruit, meat & more - Abel & Cole, not for a couple of weeks though, excited to see what I get! Bit pricey at £40 but not sure if ordered too much for one person for a week, although I eat a high raw diet so go through fruit and veg like nothing!
