I am a medium and a counsellor. I am a trained Counsellor and when I use thye term spiritual counsellor to describe my counselling work because I work with people on a personal level who wish to live within the spiritual dynamics of life.
The readings I offer are spiritual life guidance because I connect with spirit and the clients guides to pass on message abuot their life and their direction. During these I have no input whereas in Counselling sometimes I do.
I have no idea if this is the normal, only that it is what works with me - I just hope this info helps - apoloiges for spelling have been on champers!!!

Just thought I`d add my view to this.
I am training to be a spiritual healer and am roughly half way through the course.
It has opened up a huge new world to me.
I`ve always been interested in esoteric books and teachings.
The Course advocates that we become as pure a channel for healing as possible and I have tried to keep my mind, body and spirit as "clean" as possible!
I`ve started to Heal friends and family and do distant healling too.
Whilst on the phone to my mum, she advised her friends daughter had suddenly developed a fear of flying, I talked about seeing her when I was next down in the area, then I was telling my mum all about why she has the fear and what th message is that is being conveyed to her, and that she has to change her lifestyle and begin charity work, and all the time I was getting mental pictures of what was happening to this wmans life. I finished the conversation with mum, and afterwards thought "where did that come from?"
Also when talking to a good friend about the break up of her long term relationship and her inabilty to put herself above others I was able to give extensive advise on how to improve her life if she so wished. Afterwards she said"Wow!" thanks for that and it seemed to make a big impression on her. I thought little of it.
The third time it happened I was emailing a friend and suddenly was typing away frantically with advise that felt as though I was compelled to give her.
After each incident I have felt full of love and peace and calm.
I talked to my course teacher about this and she explained that I was becoming a spiritual councellor, and that she was one too.
It is not a "flash bang wallop" type of thing but very subtle - no trance or "taking over" - just the feeling that you must tell the person this information so that they have a choice.
I am not aware that I had this information before I start talking, it just kind of pours out and sometimes it is with words and phrases I wouldn`t normally use - although nothing dramatic!
I feel very humbled and grateful that spirit can help people through me as a channel.
I don`t know what happens to trigger it, but usually I feel that I am thinking about healing that person - or trying to help them in their time of need.

That's usually how it works for me too, Sarajo. There's a deep 'knowing' and strength to it that helps you know it's not coming from ego but from a higher or purer source.

You are describing exactly how my channeling work comes, I tune in, sit at my laptop and just type. I know nothing of the subject matter or what I am going to type.
