RE: Spiritual Counscelling?

Hi Flower,

I totally agree about the advisability of checking credentials etc, and I would say this is particularly relevant when, as you say they are offering to do, working with children.

This older thread on spirituality and counselling, which was in the Mind Therapies forum, may be of interest. It was a discussion on whether or not counsellors should "allow" the intervention of spirit, though like you, if I were to seek a counsellor, I would want that person to have an awareness and experience of the spiritual aspect of one's existence - not the same thing as channelling from spirit though 😉

I doubt this is the one Darren was referring to - Darren, how about posting a link? 🙂

Laura.

You are right to be wary of labels, Flower. Thanks too Holistic, for the point about children. Counselling as a term implies training of some sort, which they may not have. A much better term, IMHO, would be 'spiritual guidance', which is nearer to what I and you yourself do.

Also, you are quite right about 'blindly' following 'spirit advice' without checking with yourself first. The spirit advice may well be sound... but it has to filter through an interpreter first!

Hmmm. tread cautiously. I have seen such adverts and I think they have generally meant counselling on spiritual matters, rather than channeled counselling.

Personally, I believe that any good therapist will touch on spiritual matters anyway, if these matters are relevant in your life. Someone offering spriritual counselling on its own to me smacks of trying to milk a living out of people's yearnng for spiritual fulfillment.

To take an analogy - many people with a partiuclar sexual orientation may want to get counselling which is sympathetic to their orientation. But they wouldn't seek a specific 'gay' or 'kinky' type of counselling.

In the same way, spiritual counselling should be done, I believe, within the confines of a genuine patient/(qualified)therapist relationship.

Alternatively, many major religions offer spiritual guidance through a place of workship - from a priest or rabbi. Perhaps someone else on these boards will know if such free facilities exist within pagan or Buddhist traditions?

Did I ramble?

Love, light and laughter...
