Hi all

I've just received my Amethyst pendulum and my clear quartz pendulum today and I'm so looking forward to using them. :dft010:

There wasn't any instructions with them and I'm just wondering what the best way to use them is, shouldI have music playing, oil burning etc?

I'm also wondering whether it may help in my meditation, or should I practice meditation more before attempting to use the pendulum? Do I need to use protection? And if I do, how do I / What do I say??

Sorry for all the questions, you may have noticed I post quite a few on here, but I thought if I have got questions then this is the best placed to get them answered!

Thank you in advance.

Hi Donna,

One view on pendulums, widely-held though probably not on HP (?), is that they might as well be a steel nut on a string.

It doesn't matter at all what they are made of apart from any unconscious, psychological effect upon your mind. Along with that goes the fact that there's no invisible energy force or outside influence that moves the pendulum: as with any form of dowsing, your own wrist and hand movements are what cause it to go one way or another. Even many dowsers realise this, these days.

That said, the movements come from your unconscious. And that means that your unconscious may be "reading truly" or may just be doing what your mind wants it to from wishing. Or it can be a combination of both.

Dowsing (and pendulum use is a form of dowsing) is simply a way of objectifying what's in your unconscious. Well, it does something else as well: since the 1970s it's been caused "ownership resistance". What this means is that people find it psychologically very hard to accept that the answers are from within themselves (and can also be wrong), so any pendulum or forked twig, etc., is a way of making the answer appear as though it's coming from outside of you. It's "not you" supposedly. But watch any dowser and you'll see their instrument of choice is indeed moved by themselves.

As such the practice is usually called "psychic" and not "spiritual".

Hi Donna ... and anyone else interested in pendulum dowsing.

Here's a link to a former HP thread, with a lot of 'how-to' info in it:

Pendulums can be used to communicate with your higher self, your subconscious, and also with spirit guides.

I actually use my pendulum to communicate with my guide. The key is in realising who the information is coming from; and for this only you will know because you are having the interaction either with yourself or those that work with you in spirit.

So, dowsing is and can be 'spiritual'.

The pendulum is a tool allowing you to connect to either your higher self or those you are working with.

Yeeees, well, we'll have to agree to respectfully disagree. And given the broad nature of things on HP, though there are some spiritual topics and threads, I'm a bit like the odd one out. 😮 My tradition has it that divination in general is 'psychic' meaning neutral or capable of leading people astray, you see (a bit like a yogic siddhi). Truly being in touch with one's Higher Self, in my background, means that one is embodying large portions of that Higher Self, and to the extent we aren't 'linked up' then it has its own and other ways of working; but no need for divination.

It will seem (on HP, not in some other places of course) a radical perspective; but then - it is. 🙂

Hi PurplePeace,

Well, by 'yogic' I didn't mean related to just hatha yoga (postures), but the whole works, or raja yoga: the 'royal' or high path in yoga toward union with God. In other words, it has a spiritual goal - eventually 'moksha' or freedom from the rounds of rebirth.

A 'siddhi' is simply a psychic ability or psychic things that happen to a yogi (and some Western spiritual people) when treading a spiritual path strongly. So it could be an ability to levitate, or to read minds, or to make things appear from nowhere, to make objects move without touching them, and many of the psychic practices you read about elsewhere on HP. [A friend met a semi-famous yogi in India called the "video yogi": he could make moving scenes of things happening elsewhere appear on his palm!]

But the goal of raja yoga is union with God / the Higher Self. So many wise practitioners advise that when any of these powers or abilities come along, one should just ignore them - not to use or engage in them. They are often just distractions, and they side-track people from the true Goal, essentially wasting their time. But many people get so enamoured with these siddhis that it becomes their primary - or only - focus; the true spiritual Goal, the goal of life, is forgotten.

There's usually no need for psychic stuff on the spiritual path IMHO: one can just move directly toward the goal.

So that's what I meant, as one way of distinguishing between spiritual ways and psychic activities: the latter may partly or wholly replace the true goal, and are not spiritual in themselves. For example, not all but some water diviners are just ordinary folk with no obvious spiritual interest, but they can find water. Well, that's fine and useful, but if a spiritual aspirant got 100% side-tracked into water divining, then he/she wouldn't be accomplishing much of their actual (spiritual) goal in that life, if their inner goal is a spiritual one. 😮

[Apologies for the off-topic - if it is - to explain myself.]

Venetian, It all depends on what you're trying to do; and for every individual that will be unique.

A pendulum is a tool and can be used for many things. I consider making my essences a spiritual activity. Yes, I use a pendulum due only to how precise the information has to be, and the pendulum actually helps me with accuracy. I don't consider working with those in Spirit a 'psychic' activity. The pendulum is a tool in the same way that a carpenter uses his or her tools and I use it as a tool.
