If we can step away from the expectations and precepts of any specific “religion” the question I would ask is, “Why is forgiveness necessary at all?”
Assume that experience exists in its own right; then go from there. You have had an experience. Take the learning and proceed. Leave the emotional attachment behind. It may be difficult, but it is possible.
We, as humans, have the ability to let go of emotional attachments, but also have the right and ability to take them back as well. All too often we dig ourselves a hole by using anger against another and, true, it hurts both. But if you ask that the hurt be taken away, as many times as you take it back, it will be done. Then ask that those spaces be filled with warmth, or Love, or whatever you want to call it.
It isn’t forgiveness, it isn’t forgetting, it is distancing yourself from the emotions that injure.
