Hi All,ive been veggie for 3yrs,i dont eat from takeaways at the best of times, but i took my children out to dinner at the local chippy in town and out of curiosity i asked the waitress how they cook their chips. She said they cook the chips separate from the burgers and sausages etc, they have their own pan,BUT they are cooked in the same oil!..lucky i ordered a salad roll,i just wondered if anyone else knew this...blessings butterfly
Did she mean literally the same oil, or perhaps the same brand/type of oil?
Holistic
yes literally the same oil,it might just be that chippy, but all you vegans/veggies ask before you order!..x
My chippy uses the same brand of oil but has 4 seperate fryers, one for fish, one for meat products, one for chips and one for vegetables. Might be why he wins awards so often....
Slightly off topic but it's worth mentioning that many fast food outlets use hydrogenated vegetble oil which contains trans-fats.
Trans-fats are far are even a greater risk to health than saturated fats and a major contributor to heart disease.
So it's worth checking out what sort of oil your local chipy uses.
Myarka.
What I thought this thread was about is that northern chippies use dripping i.e. animal fat = not vegetarian, and southern chippies use oil! Oh well, you live and learn!
i just wondered if anyone else knew this...blessings butterfly
Yes, I did but then I have no excuse - been doing this for 20 odd years. 😀
I am very funny about eating out and the thought that they may even use the same utensils they just used for meat. 😮
Same here I don,t eat out much I find it trust issue in respect to preparation and cooking.
However thankyou for the heads up.:)
I think that it varies from chippy to chippy. Ask and then decide, not all chippies are bad or use trans fats or animal etc.
