Hey all
Just wondered if anyone else has tried out any of 'you are what you eat' Gillian Mckeiths recipes?
I tried the marinated baked salmon last night - it was yum!!
Am going to try the lentil stew next, and maybe one of the soups over the weekend.
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hi Star,
not tried any recipes, but I am munching on pumpkin seeds, have bought the Alfalfa seeds to sprout and also the linseed.........trying not to mix them with the chocolate of course!!!!
The lentil stew sounds yummy!

Mmm pumpkin seeds are great, have them on my salad every day.
Also hoping to buy a sprouter this weekend to grow alfalfa sprouts, to add to salads and soups/casseroles.
I think I'd find it virtually impossible to follow Gillian's actual day plans, but am trying incorporate some meals and tips into my daily life.
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
my only complaint is that her quantities are all in "cups" - ??????????
I know I know easy enought to "translate " them - but why should we have to!!!
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
The sweet potato pie is divine.

RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Yes the cups thing is a bit annoying. What sort of cup do you use? small/large/medium etc? Teacup of coffee cup?!
LEt me look what the net says...er, silly things like 48 teaspoons!!!
Think I'll just get a teacup from my nan and use that.
Will report back tomorrow on how the lentil stew is!!
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
I like the use of cups in recipes because Im really lazy and it saves me getting my scales out and washing them!!!
I must say tho, my cups are usually mugs! I dont think it matters too much tho-as long as you use the same cup/mug for the whole of the recipe!!

RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
HAven't tried lentil stew yet (that's scheduled for Thursday!!) but sweet potato shepherds pie was very nice, enjoyed that.
Got some aduki beans now so will try tha aduki bean casserole tomorrow night :o)
(and bought millet to try millet mash and quinoa and some alfalfas to sprout, it's all so fun!)
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hi Star
do let me know about the millet mash - I couldnt quite bring myself to take that seriously, keep thinking of those budgies with a plate of mash and sausages lol!!
I havent got around to sprouting my alfalfa yet, but am loving the seeds.
I read the other book, 12 Power foods or something like that, so havent actaully read you are what you eat to get the recipes - it is next on my trip to the library!
I do love baked Sweet potatoe though, so the idea of using it in shepherds pie sounds great!
(A good bread I have discovered is BERGEN - it contains Linseed and Rye and is delicious, if a bit pricey at £1.07 a loaf!)

Millet mash was not a sucess for us!!
Boyf is quite fussy anyway and he did not like it at all. I forced most of my down helped along by spinach, but i won't bother with it again.
I am trying to sprout some millet grains now - see what they're like!
I had the quinoa today - I cooked it in veg stock and mixed it in a salad - really enjoyed it! Would recommend.
Aduki bean casserole was also a disaster - I don't think Gillian has the right cooking time or soaking time on her recipe online - she says soak for 2/3 hours whereas my recipe book said overnight (I did soak overnight) then cook for half an hour - my recipe book said 1 hr!! They were hard and really not very nice, so next time I'll cook them for an hour at least.
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hiya Star!
Couldnt you get aduki beans out of a tin (no salt or sugar added) and make it easy on yourself!??
I never have any look with dried beans so I always use tinned now!
Tx
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
To be honest it was very hard trying to find them anywhere at all - and then the only option was dry! I don't mind the soaking and cooking, as long as they are nice at the end!!!
Might try and make some of Gillian's bean burgers with them!
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
I tried the broccoli soup with a fennell in - really not that nice!!
Others may like it, but I won't bother again - had to to put loads of salt and pepper in to make it palatable!
Trying the leek and turnip one tonight....
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hi Star - Im glad that someone else didnt rate the millet mash. We tried the McKieth diet for 3 months and truthfully we felt FANTASTIC - more energy etc etc but the millet mash was just tasteless - yuk!
Also - we tried the quinoa with high expectations as a replacement for rice but it was really sticky and again tasteless - maybe its me !!!
I got some really good mckieth kind of recipes - maybe I should start a recipe thread??

To prepare beans for sprouting you are meant to soak them overnight so I apply the same thing when I am going to cook them. 2 hours doesn't sound long enough. I got the book for Christmas and am enjoying planning what I am going to try. We already eat quinoa and enjoy it very much. It is lovely eaten cold with tuna, sweetcorn and onion as a lunchtime salad, and is very filling.
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hiya - Pleeeze tell me how you prepare your Quinoa - I've still got half a packet and I'd love to try it again,

RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hello Jan
Well, on my pack (Primeal Quinoa) it tells you to wash the quinoa before cooking. If you don't, there is a residue on the outside of the grains that can make it taste funny and also be a bit sticky apparently. You are meant to use twice as much water as the quantity of quinoa you are cooking, although I read somewhere else that you should even more than that - whatever. So, put it all in a pan and bring to the boil, then simmer for 10-15 mins. They advise 150g of quinoa for 2 people by the way. You could experiment with adding the quinoa to already boiling water. I read on the internet that when you drain the quinoa you should leave it for a few mins then fluff up with a fork, like you do with the couscous grain.
I hope this helps. I'm going to experiment with millet soon so I will let you know how I get on. I suspect it is not unlike quinoa.
A little moan - has anyone else had problems with UTTERLY rubbish cooking instructions on grains, beans etc? I bought some couscous and when I cooked it according to the pack instructions it was inedible, just a nasty mush. I don't like paying for things that don't give you a good result! [:'(]

First of all I'd like to say hi to everyone, I have just discovered this forum and am enjoying reading all the posts.
I have been following the mckeith fitness regime (about 80% of the time) and can honestly say I have never felt better! loads of energy, and I had been feeling and looking awful before (menopausal and with an underactive thyroid).
However this is not a diet it is a way of life and if you stick to the 80/20 rule it is easy.

if you google her name you will get her website which has a handful of recipes on it,, some of which have been discussed on here, the one i am looking for (above) isnt on there:(
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hi Magic mum
I did see it, I have a vague recollection of the recipe, perhaps others can fill in the gaps, lol!
Don't remember what the pancake was made of but the filling looked like chopped up peppers with kidney beans. Hope that's a start anyway!
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Yeah I said to my husband that those looked nice and the burger things she had on the plate that the daughter actually liked....
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
I think the wraps were made out of oat bran, flour and water and the filling was chunky veg such as courgettes, peppers and carrots, kidney beans, tomatoes etc.
The burgers were made out of smoked tofu and rice, I don't know the exact recipe but I am just going to experiment with that and see what it turns out like. I can't wait for her new recipe book to come out.

RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Hi,
Just thought I would pipe in and tell you that she is using the standard American measurements--as she was mostly educated in America, this is probably how she probably sees food measurements.
A "cup" is not any old glass or mug you have in your cupboard. . .it is a standard measurement of 8 ounces.
I am from the US, but living in England at the moment and found a plastic measuring cup here that is metric on the one side and has "cups" on the other side. On the metric side it also has ounces right next to the ml so that you can easily see both side by side. I think I got it from Tescos and it was pretty cheap. I use it to convert all my new British recipes into "cups."
:]
Hope that helps!

RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
thanx for the cup conversion advice. GM's new cookbook is on Amazon - ready for preorder as not out yet.
RE: Gillian Mckeith recipes-anyone tested any?
Am I the only one who actually enjoyed the millet mash??? It's just as well because instead of cups I used mugs and ended up eating it for three days afterwards!!!

Hi Everyone
This is very new to me so please forgive any mistakes.
Having read the last thread I can tell you that I bought some 'cups' in Tescos. They look like a miniature set of 4 saucepans and tell you the measurements of 1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup and 1/4 cup. I have found them invaluable - have you ever noticed that a cup of chocolate looks so much smaller than a cup of, say, beans? Maybe it's just me but it does keep me on the straight and narrow.
Has anyone tried the Salmon with leeks and spinach? Really yummy, filling and was so quick to prepare.
The Catster
Her recipes are in cups and teaspoons? That's super convenient for me. Now I really want to buy one of her books.
