Hi
I currently trying to lose weight, I need to lose at least 2 stone which would make me very comfy but the books say 4 stone, anyway I have a back problem (3 discs in lower back) and upper back (2 near neck), just can't write everything down as it would take ages...but had MRI, injections, lots of physio and I still do alot of the core exercises that were taught to me (private treatment through Bupa), I walk everyday..mostly with the dogs over soft hills and fields which I find kinder to my joints ect. I have a treadmill which I love and use alot.
Even when I don't succeed losign a few pounds one week I do carry on with my walking ect, I have to keep active AND the damp weather does affect me, so I'm feeling pretty rubbish at the moment.
I do admire runners and have always been afraid to break out into a jog on the treadmill (always power walked and used different inclines ) but I was recently encouraged and found that with my new sports bra..lol..it is possible!
so I started a routine and would like views on it please..
always on a 2% incline I start with stretches then
5 minutes walking warm up (2.5mph)
3 minute jog at (4mph)
2 minute walk
3 minute jog
2 minute walk
3 minute jog
5 minute walk.cool down
finishing with stretches
then 10 mins on the vibro plate
This programme is from an fitness magazine I buy and this is week one, then it changes,,,the program is 5 weeks and it supposed to prepare you for a 5 k run.
only thing is I'm having a bad flair up with my back...do I take pain killers and just take it easy but try to carry on with the routine..any advise would be extremely appriciated as I've started this and would like to achieve the end result!
cheers susan
what shoes / trainers are you wearing and get medical advice about your back .
30 minute walk will do as much good as a 15 minute slow jog .
what good will you be if you lose weight but cant walk because you made your back worst .
if you got to take pain killers to do jogging , you not doing your self any good ,
a good pair of running trainers might help .
but there not cheap .
Hi, I've been having medical advise for the last 2 years and the best, I've been told I will not do any damage by exercising, I just have to listen to my body and do what I feel is right, that comes from the physiotherapist. As for the shoes..yes, I have the correct trainers, took advise on that..even have the proper socks if there is such a thing!
NO I do not have to take pain killers to jog....I hate pain killers and haven't taken any for a long long time but, again, from a physios advise sometimes a few pain killers maybe in the morning to get me going is not a crime.
my post was asking advise because I just (this week) had a flair up with soreness in my back and was wondering if anyone on here manages to run when they have experianced back trouble maybe!
Right medical advise, right shoes, right clothing. maybe I read your reply wrong but it came across rude

i have a bac problem and would love to be able to exercise, but i need painkillers to get through the day. i need to lose some weight in fact a good stone would help, but all exercise kills my back ven when taking the painkillers. i have tried swimming, i went for months but always felt something grinding in my back. all i can do now is try to walk short distances and if i go further i hold on to my grandaughters pushchair for support. god help me when she is walking every where, i will have to use a stick then. another issue is when i am moving the message from my brain does not reach my feet and i stumble and fall. i dont think ray rush was being rude, just he was pointing out that when you feel the pain dont do it, it will make things worse.
hope it goes well for you with your exercise plan

im sorry you thought the advices i was trying to give you , came across rude , as it was not writing that way .
all i was trying to say, the old saying no pain no gain , means , little bit of pain whilsts doing the excirses is ok .
but any think that triggers off other parts of the body to give you pain or trouble , then you need to take proper medical advice and look what and our you are doing it .
there are many footballers . runners . rugby players ,ice skaters , etc ,
that when there pulled a muscle or done there self some injury . rest till there have recovered .
the advice was given with all good intening as would not like to see you get in to a postion where , trying to lose weight you end up unable to walk for days on end .
i to have a treadmill and try diffent speed and inclines on it to maintain my weight and fitness .

the problem with your programme is it is a one size fits all approach, If I were you I would seek the advice of someone who specialises in teaching people to run, a personal trainier with expertise would be advantageous.
everyone has biomechanical diffferences that make them respond differently to programmes,
mild discomfort is ok but pain whilst exercising is your body telling you to back off
