Hi a new user here.
I had the Mirena fit yesterday and have felt awful ever since with bad cramps and backache.
I know these will subside but my biggest fear is weight gain, I have lost 5 stone in the past 16 months and have another half stone to lose, I have been reading that this coil can cause weight gain and now I am paranoid as no way do I want to gain any weight.
Anyone got anything positive to say about the Mirena as I am seriously thinking of going and having it taken out because I am so scared of gaining weight
Thanks
Mirena Coil VS Nature
Hi,
I had the Mirena coil fitted at the very beginning of march and so far everything appears fine, I had a bit of spotting over the next few days but no pain(except on the day- wheew!). TBH I wish I had done it sooner - although I am only 22 I have had heavy agonizing periods for 11 years to the point where I was fainting at school. I had tried various painkillers and medications and this was the only option left open to me apart from ablation/hysterectomy which I don't want as I have yet to have children.
The coils hasn't affected me mood at all nor have I seemed to gain weight, and as for sex drive my seems more powerful than ever!. I think the side affects depend on the individual. I have yet to have another period but even if it makes them a bit lighter and less painful I will consider it a success!:D
side effects help!
Hi there
I had the Mirena coil fitted yesterday morning. Im 27 and have no kids so i knew it would most probably be painful. The anaesthetic gel was horrendous, I've never felt pain like it (ive had 2 tattoos and 37 piercings, they dont come close to the pain) but it was short lived and the measuring and fitting was quick and only a small sharp pain. I had chronic stomach crap for an hour afterwards then it died away completely over the course of the day. Woke up this morning pain free in the stomach area but my head and eye sockets hurt and i feel sick. I suffer from very painful muscle problems in my neck and shoulders which is triggered by stress. My heads a mess now as i dont know if the coil has caused the sickness/headache which is making me stressed and causing the neck pain OR is it totally unrelated to the coil and the headache/sickness is caused by the neck problem. Has anybidy else experienced the nausea and if so how long for?
Re. Mirena Coil - your views?
Hi Everybody!
I had the Mirena coil fitted three weeks ago, as my last resort due to suffering from extremely heavy periods (so heavy that I was anaemic). I can understand for the women that do not suffer from heavy periods and only use the Mirena for birth control that it would be very difficult to stick with the Mirena, due to the length of time it can take for your body to adjust to the coil. In my case, I know it's one of my only choices and I am very willing to stick with it; hoping for an easier, much happier life
I mistakenly read many "horror" stories online before going to my appointment to have the Mirena fitted. I was so scared! I am very good with pain having to deal with bad period pain on a regular basis and from having cervical biopsies in the past etc. That part of the "horror" stories didn't bother me; many people wrote about being in extreme pain during fitting and feeling faint etc and as I am prone to fainting, I was a little cautious! I was more worried reading that quite a lot of people were given an injeciton to cope with the pain; I was scared stiff that my doctor would do this as I have an immense fear of needles! I took two pain killers an hour before my appointment. I had requested a female doctor, as I have a male doctor and felt a bit uncomfortable about having a male perform the procedure (especially seeing as though my period was still quite heavy on time of exertion). The doctor was extremely helpful and went through the procedure and hopefully what the Mirena coil with effectively do. There was also a nurse present who was really sweet and held my hand whilst the coil was being exerted. The exertion only took a couple of minutes. The doctor prepared me for the more painful parts, but apart from a sharp period pain type feeling for a few seconds, I didn't experience any other problems, but as I say, I am pretty good with pain. I am glad the doctor didnt offer any injection or gel to numb the area (many "horror" stories talk of this hurting more than the insertion; so why have it? and it would have taken twice as long to carry out the procedure?) The most embarrassing part was when the doctor removed the clamp and I bled all over the doctors couch (although the doctor and nurse looked more horrified than me; I was used to dealing with a heavy bleed). I was able to get up and drive the 25mins homes straight away; I did feel a little shaky, but I had a sugary drink before I started driving and I felt fine
I did have quite a lot of pain later that afternoon and almost felt like I was having contractions in my vaginal area, but these soon subsided. I was a little uncomfortable laying on my side in bed for a couple of days afterwards, but this soon subsided.
During the first week, I had a brown discharge similar to the start of a period, which I just used a pantyliner for. Since then, I have been bleeding reasonably heavy, but no where near as heavy as what I was experiencing. I am quite happy coping with a constant period at the moment, as it is manageable. luckily, I have a very understanding husband; I believed the other day that the bleeding had stopped, but it started up again quite heavy, and therefore my husband and I haven't had sexual intercourse since I had the coil fitted. My husband is extremely understanding and caring, knowing how much I suffered from my heavy periods.
I am 27 years old and I haven't got any children.
Please don't be put off by all of the horror stories on forums regarding the fitting of the coil and living with it; if you are like me and suffer from extremely heavy periods that ruin your everyday life, give it a chance I am so pleased i had it fitted; I know it is early days, but hopefully is will change my life so much and make me happy again
If anybody has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask
x
Hi
I am so glad its not just me thats been bleeding so long. Iam on day 27 now its become abit of a joke really not that my husband thinks so . I was certainly getting worried. I had it fit 27 days since i have not really had pain its just the bleeding. just lets hope its worth it in the end. To be fair this is nothing compared to the 10 days a month i used to have caused by 7 or 8 large fibroids. Anyways thanks i will carry on with it and hope it helps.
Advice needed
Hi
Where do I start, well I had had heavy periods in the past and I've been on a wonder drug that I didn't have periods but the only side affect was that my sex life got up and left, its putting pressure on my relationship and I life sex lol. So I changed pills and bloody hell I have bled for a month and a half and clots as well so i went to see my dr and she has suggested the coil but I'm not so sure please give me some advice x:)
Mirena coil
Hi all.
I had the mirena coil fitted 2 days ago. I must admit that the fitting was rather uncomfortable, and the discomfort continued into the evening. 2 days on I don't have a constant contraction pain. I get the odd cramp now and again but all is good. I thought I would check it is still there this morning as I am worried my body will reject it but low and behold I could feel the strings, a lot lower than I thought they would be but they are ok. I would recommend the coil to anyone. A couple of days if discomfort for 5 years protection.
Thanks for reading. X

hi all
i have been looking for positive reviews about the mirena coil and so far with a few exceptions have only read horror stories ! i had a coil fitted yesterday....due to heavy periods and stomach cramps and backache which lasted 2 days and made me unfit to go to work or do anything else ( luckily i am self employed!).
i am 43 years old and was diagnosed with fibroids a few years ago which is the cause of cramping and backache every month. the gp prescribed the pill which i kept forgetting to take... i havent had to worry about contraception as my husband had a vasectomy about 10 years ago (wasnt that good of him!) in the end after a very very heavy period last month i took the doctors advice and made an appointment to have a coil fitted. the actual insertion lasted about 5 mins but seemed a lot longer due to the pain and how uncomfortable i felt. i did feel a bit lightheaded and my body was drenched with sweat. afterwards i didnt feel too bad when i got up, had a glass of water and came home. since then i have had very light bleeding everytime i went to the toilet to pass water, yesterday afternoon i had a few twinges of pain and light cramping but bearable. since yesterday evening i have backache, have a very heavy feeling down below and am conscious every time i sit or get up, bleeding is almost non existant and almost no twinges of pain or cramping. was told to take it easy by the doctor and that is what i am going to do for the weekend even though i have tons of housework to do
am hoping that i dont get any of the severe after affects of which i have read about but only time will tell. am a regular gym goer so will carry on with that and hope i dont put weight on. then will see how i get on with my periods starting from next month even though i know it will be a few months till my body starts to react to the coil.
i hope i have offered a positive review of the coil insertion for any first time readers just as i was looking for

I think you have to remember how many mirena's are fitted every year. It will be many mnay times the number of bad experiences rceorded . Also people not having problems are most unlikley to post anything.
If the majority of women fitted with the Mirena had massive problems it would be taken off the market .It has been used for many many years in many many women who have found it very helpful.
If you have it and it doesn't suit you - it can be removed and you can look at other options . But give it a try. While I never had a mirena I did have coil and once it was in it was fine
I had a Miena coil fitted in 2003 after suffering bad periods and heavy bleeding due to fibriods, it took 6 months for the spot bleeding to stop and has been a wonderful relief . I asked my GP if I should have it removed after 5 yrs and she said no it's fine. The we moved from UK to NZ and I aske dmy GP here when she did a smear if I should have teh coil removed and she said nooo we keep them in now?! It's now 10 yrs and I have gone through menopause so i asked another GP and she said yes she's take it out. I went on Tuesday and she tried 3 x to take it out but it was VERY painful so she had to give up and she's asking hosp. gynae dept what to do. I'm concerned it's embedded and worried . It has been good to read other people's experiences already , has anyone else had a problem with the Mirena embedding?
Hi dendy,
I also had an embedded coil which had to be removed at the hospital. I was dreading it as had a previous one removed at gps that wasn't embedded and it hurt a lot! However, the consultant obviously knew what he was doing as even though the string had gone through my cervix he removed it with no pain. So try not to longer Wend:)
Thank you .
I have talked to GP today and she has referred me to Hospital , they suggested I have a hysteroscopy? to find out where coil is ( under GA) and have the coil removed. Hoping the waiting list isn't too long as it's quite uncomfortable atm.
The Mirena coil is only effective for 5 years and should be removed after that time. Are you sure it WAS a Mirena and not another type of coil? I don't know about guidance for removing non medicated coils - but I wouldn't want one in for more than 5 years.
If it IS a Mirena then the doctors who said it could be left in were going against the guidance given by the manufacturer. Hope you can get it removed safely.
Sally
mirena stick withit
Hi all,
I had big big fibroids and had bleeding every day bar 3 days a month. I didn't want a hyster so looked at other options. I found out about the mirena and it worked for me. I had no side effects at all, actually all my hassle came when it had to come out after 5 years by which time I was perry meno. I had sweating like I had never seen before, almost like a drug dealer. So I had no choice but to have another fitted as my gp thought it best. Problem was by this time I had developed vaginismus and was in melt down. Gp tried, so did a contraceptive nurse to fit it but no luck I was shutting tight. I was told that I had to let them in to fit it. I was mortified, however I did find a site that deals with mirena and fibroid issues and the need to get over vaginismus for the fitting of a mirena. I took the plunge and bought it - the vagi wave, and it sorted me out.The good thing was because I was to relaxed after using the vagi wave my gp was able to take her time placing the mirena in a good position, this I have learnt is very important as it helps prevent the mirena flipping or the threads getting into the womb from movement. As I had it placed without a rush to fit it I have found this fitting has been so comfortable. I asked my gp why she was pleased with me this time and she said because I did not spasm it was easier for her to place it where it needed to be for fit and purpose. She was pleased I had sorted out my vaginismus as her job was easier and therefore the results for me better. I no longer feel this mirena, it must be sitting perfectly as I no longer have aches like I did with the other one. Now I see why the vagi wave website links vaginismus and the mirena, they are right, everything seems to go hand in hand and is overlooked by everyone.
Hi All,
Just found this forum and have a question for Merina users..
I had mine fitted just over a week ago-all went smoothly,no it wasn't a pain free experience but wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be....Feel fine,no pain or discomfort so far no side effects BUT I can't feel the strings....There wasn't much time spent on this-I was shown a diagram and told if I can't feel the strings get it checked.. Any help appreciated.. xx
Hiya Gull. I think you answered your own question, I hope you've been able to get it checked this week. The docs are there to support you, peace of mind, learning how to get it checked is all part of that. Hope you've got your peace of mind now.
Hi
I had the mirena fitted 3 weeks ago to try and reduce my heavy periods. It was fitted very quickly with a tiny bit of discomfort but no agony as I have read with others.
I have had a tiny show of blood the past few days similar to a very light period but not a real one!! I have not increased with weight or moods (so far, fingers crossed!)
I go away on holiday in 7 weeks and really do not want to be on my period. I was thinking of taking Yasmin pill once I did have another period just prior to and during my vacation. Does anyone know if this is safe to do so please??? Thank you
I expect Tashanie will be along shortly - she is a pharmacist, and will know whether using both forms of contraceptive is wise or not.
