RE: OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER

1. 32
2. Female.
3. Since I was about 11 (since puberty).
4. Checking (locks, cooker, plugs, etc), unwanted thoughts (distressing images, replaying upsetting events over and over), 'stuck' songs or phrases, hoarding and collecting, I have the urge to arrange things in straight lines or at right angles!
5.It used to as I had problems getting out of the door in the morning (because of checking) and sometimes had to leave work to go home to check things but since I saw a therapist (think he was a cognitive Psycologist) the checking is a lot easier to control but the unwanted thoughts are worse (which effects my daily life less but is more distressing).
6. Some think it's a bit odd but more people know what it is now and most are sympathetic.
7. I get very frustrated with it. It's like having a gremlin in my brain that is constantly trying to drive me crazy. Sometimes it quiet, but it's always there making me doubt myself (I know I just checked the hob off but maybe I didn't check it PROPERLY). I have read that some are making the connection between OCD and Tourettes. I agree that there are similarities with regards to the unwanted thoughts. The OCD gremlin seems to take great joy in placing the most upsetting, discusting, innapropriate images and make me view them contantly for days, weeks at a time. I did spend 9 months on anti depressants a few years ago (for depression that I believe was kicked off by my anxiety caused by the OCD). The symptoms disappeared almost completely but the side effects were unbearable.

Hope this helps. I have posted this on line as I think it is important that we are more open about OCD.

Lyssa
